(Brought to my attention by Gef the Talking Mongoose…)
It's getting to be that time of the year again. According to a news report, two separate witnesses in Utah described strange red lights in the sky in a triangular formation. The lights moved silently in a triangular formation and appeared to be dropping white burning "flares". The video is of poor quality and I can't make out the colors myself, so I have to take the witnesses' words for it.
My take? Flares or other pyrotechnics attached to balloons. The balloons are probably attached to each other with string or cable, and one of the fireworks is throwing off sparks.
It might be relevant that this incident happened the Friday night before Chinese New Year.

Probably something more ridged than cables or strings to hold the formation.
The Wasatch range is seismically active…so there is always the possibility of "earthquake lights" but that doesn't seem to fit the evidence in this case. I think the witnesses did see something man-made, probably a hoax. There was nothing particularly "spectacular" about it in terms of speed or movement and they seemed pretty levelheaded about it.

I'm most honored you did this, Stephen! Admittedly, I'd just been freaked out by the Jerusalem mothership, so I was primed to go all Roky Crikenson on it (it's February and the cabin fever is bad). Yeah, the three lights hold together too well to be separate balloons. The military denies involvement, but that doesn't mean much. I guess the lack of noise might be explained away by distance, but can any aircraft hold a formation that well? One big balloon holding up a big cardboard triangle? Oh, wait – what if it's a fake newscast??? Damn the internet anyway. I can't believe anything anymore.
