Convenient that it showed up during a photography festival…shades of the Dartmoor Hybrid.
I hope it was hovering REALLY still for that 20-second exposure, too!

They used a "daylight" filter hehheh.
Doesn't take a long exposure in light polluted skies to look like day.

And of course, like with most of these photos, the EXIF data is missing so I can't tell any of the specifics. They do talk about midnight being about the time they took the 20-second exposure.
There appears to be a pretty large light source on the right side of the photo, the glare of which you can see entering quite a bit of the right side frame. Given the artifacts I see in the image I think this one has been blown up a bit and we are probably seeing something greater than 100% original size. It's also been compressed about 75%, too which hurts the quality somewhat…that was possibly done for web presentation or the students didn't know what they were doing with the compression settings in the camera. I'd love to see the RAW of this one.
Also funny how it's clipped right at the very top edge of the object, the crop actually affecting part of the subject. Now, I've clipped things before when shooting, in fact quite recently I botched a pretty good shot doing that, but the actual object I was shooting I got fairly well in the frame…and it was a one-shot deal whereas these guys had 40 minutes or so. I haven't seen any of the other photos yet but haven't had much time to look too hard.

Just looking at the picture…I thought of fireworks…something like this:
http://www.superpyro.com/images_2/large_images/GreenHornets_Large.jpg
Throw out the story and just look at the image. So…if thought of as an alien craft, then it strikes me as extremely odd. An alien craft having all sorts of crazy technology to negotiate the expanse of space, yet, they get to Earth and use fire, a simple chemical process, as a form of propulsion? Really? It's akin to the craft landing, the aliens exit and their weapon of choice is a wrench. I don't know…it just strikes me as very weird.
And Nosfer, you're right. It does remind me of the weirdness surrounding the Dartmoor image. "Oh…I was just walking around the woods with my camera. Oh, and yeah, there's a photograhy festival coming up so I was really, really, really lucky." Yes. No reason to question that…
