after my 15th birthday i was at home alone one night and i had just walked into the dining room from the hall when i heard this very low groaning growl under the 2 living room windows next to the dining room where i stood. it scared me to death. it sounded like those werewolf movies starting in 1981. how do you debunk something like that? and it wasn't the wind or whatever.

Generally speaking, the more facts you have, the easier something is to decipher.  With just the one fact, there's really not much you can do other than listen to recordings of different animals growling to see which one sounds the most like what you heard.

There are other possibilities too though, like if you'd checked under the window the next morning to look for any prints that might be in the dirt.  If there were prints you could take plaster casts and compare them to known animal prints on the web.

I certainly wouldn't expect you to run to the window and look out while something scary was outside, much less grab a camera or a camcorder, but for those who do manage to grab a recording device that's often some of the best evidence one can get because you can zoom in, slow it down, and generally review it in ways that would have been impossible to do in the few seconds you filmed or snapped photos.

Was it a full moon?”
From all that information you gave I can only conclude it was a couple of werewolves during mating season.

I might be mistaken, God forbid. Do you happen to know if you have dogs living in your neighborhood. More then likely one of them wandered into your yard and unfortunately caught a small animal, cat, or rabbit under the window and that would certainly cause a dog to growl. Did you go out side the next day and look under the window to determine what it was. Bird feathers and fur may have given you a good explanation.  Since werewolves are considered folklore and urban legend, my guess is big doggie.

I think they do exist, maybe not in the "movie sense", but some kind of "shape shifter" that has no relation to the phases of the moon but simply wills it to happen. Never seen one but would like to know how they came into being, assuming they exist, according to some less than "free thinking" friends of mine.

Um…what?

First, a word on werewolves.  Science has determined that there is something behind the myths and legends of the werewolf, but it has nothing to do with the paranormal.  The condition is known as congenital generalized hypertrichosis terminalis (CGHT).  A very short article on the topic can be found here.  It highlights the work being done by geneticist Xue Zhang of the Peking Union Medical College in Beijing.  A more scientific look at the work can be found here.

As for human "shape-shifters"…I can find no evidence to support even the very notion of this being true.  Biologically speaking, I do not see how a human can internally and externally change their species by "simply willing it to happen."  The thought of it may be entertaining and provide the backdrop to some very interesting movies or books.  Yet…there is utterly no scientific basis to propose that human "shape-shifting" is real.

If you wish to debate anything that I have just stated, please provide some sort of evidence that may support your extraordinary claim.  I will accept and consider any sort of scientific study, genetic testing, or any other experiment that would show proof of that human shape-shifting to the degree in which you are inferring is even remotely possible.

Also, please remember…that this particular forum section is for those that have had unusual personal experiences and are looking for logical explanations as to what they experienced.  Perhaps they are looking for a different perspective in order to view the experience in a new light.  All we can do is ask questions about the event and use logic, deductive reasoning, and science in order to figure out what actually occurred.  Many times, there are just not enough facts to support a decent theory.  Other times, the world is a weird place, we can't explain everything…that's just how it goes.  Yet, to come along and state a personal belief that one believes in werewolves and shape-shifters without any sort of evidence that it even exists in the first place…I'm not quite clear on how that sheds any new light on this personal experience.  And no matter what section a post is written in, any wild and unsubstantiated claims, theories, or beliefs will most likely be challenged on an intellectual level.  It's the law of the land in these parts…
