My first, and only, unexplained experience thus far. I welcome your comments/theories. Thanks for reading!

***

It was a Saturday afternoon. Last May. I was in my English classroom, grading papers and preparing lessons for the week. This was a normal routine; I often spent time alone at school, and had never felt uneasy before. This day, however, was different.

Within five minutes of my arrival, I heard something. It came from a distance, from down the hallway. A man's voice. From my desk, I looked out the window, which faced the only parking lot (it's a very small country school) and saw nothing. No cars. No people.

The voice was neither distinct nor "human" sounding. It was extremely muffled and said, perhaps, four syllables. I had the strangest feeling it was answering a question, something I hadn't heard asked. It came from, what sounded like, the middle-to-far-end of the hallway. My classroom being at the opposite end of the corridor. It not only echoed, but seemed to issue from somewhere near the ceiling. (Sounds bizarre, I know.) I can assure you it wasn't the intercom. Hearing that on a daily basis, I was accustomed to that sound.

After a few moments of silence, I had the courage to check the school. Taking a screwdriver (the only weapon at hand) I ventured out. As I said, the building is small: one long hallway attached to an office, lobby, and gym. Walking down the corridor, I peered into various classrooms, checked the library, lobby, etc. I heard nothing. No one else was in the school.

Back in the classroom, I resumed my work. Ten minutes later, I heard the voice again. This time, it was much shorter. Two syllables, maybe, like one half of a conversation. Again, it was muffled and echo-y. Like the first voice, it seemed to carry down the hallway from a distance.

I couldn't concentrate any longer. As I was packing up to leave (I'll admit, I felt quite uneasy) I heard it once more. This time was the strangest. It sang. Five notes, up the scale. Humorous as it may sound, I'm not joking. Like the first two times, it was muffled and came from the same distance away.

Taking my screwdriver with me, I exited the school, via the computer lab door. On my way, I made sure each computer was turned off (to rule out weird tech noises). None were on.

During the whole experience, I had the bizzare feeling that there were other voices carrying on, just below my threshold of hearing. Like the volume was turned low and all I could hear was this one voice piping up.

That was my last weekend working alone at the school. But not because of what I heard. School was soon dismissed for the summer, and I have since taken another job. What's strange was, I had worked nearly every weekend there. For three years. Until that point, I'd never heard a thing. Since it was my last weekend working there, I never will again.

I got the chills when I read your post. I can't imagine how freaky that must have been! I wish I had a theory for you, but I have nothing.

If you believe in telekinesis, raise my hands.

Hi windypine–

I thank you for your account. Very well written.

What was the weather like that day? I assume it was clear, because you didn't mention rain. Was it windy? Or am I being mislead by your name? :)

Before reading further, could you identify any particular sounds that the voice made? Any particular vowels? Any consonants?

I've heard some similar cases. Someone posted here once saying that they had heard a voice in a hallway saying "hello," for example. A common factor seems to be either a long hallway or stairwell, and that the voice doesn't sound quite human.

I think the hallway is the key. Human voices are basically the sound of a buzzer or whistle at the end of a tube. If you've got a long hallway and a source of noise– a whistling window on a windy day might do it– then you've got something that can produce a sound like a voice.

What isn't clear is why you'd never heard the voice before. Perhaps someone hadn't quite gotten a window closed. Perhaps it was just a bit breezier than normal. In other words, maybe there was a source of noise that day that hadn't been there before.

So that's my guess– and it is a guess. It's not the world's most satisfying explanation, but it's what I've got right now. What do you think?

My son used to have a Power Ranger toy that would utter phrases if you played with it. Eventually He outgrew the toy and it sat in his room. Over time the battery drained and the toy would periodically speak one of its phrases, out of the blue, with no prompting. The first time we heard the voice, down the hall, we didn't know what it was, but eventually we figured it out as it would go off when we were in the room and could hear clearly hear what it was saying. Most of the time it would just say the one phrase and never speak again for days or even weeks. Eventually it was moved to the garage and we would forget about it until it would go off reminding us that we still had the toy.

Yes, it was a creepy experience! I'm glad it didn't happen at night.

Stephen - the weather was a bit cloudy and rainy. I hadn't considered wind, but would be inclined to rule that out simply because the voice was deep and hollow sounding. It wasn't a whistle, groan, or hoot like noises I've heard when wind blows through windows. It also resonated within the hallway, it didn't come from a classroom where the only windows are located. There are two sets of front doors to the school, but those were secure.

I had thought about how hallways might amplify noise – I'm glad you mentioned that, Stephen. Also, in thinking about the experience after I had written it out, it crossed my mind that a student might have left something in a locker that made noise. A phone, an mp3 player, etc. I'd have to rule out Power Rangers unless a 7th or 8th grader might still play with one :)

So, now I'm wishing I could re-live the experience to analyze it further! Wish it was on tape.
