This is a reoccuring incident for me. Things to note: This only happens in places that have potenial to be haunted. It has not occured to me in the current house I live in….and this house is by far one of the creepiest I lived in, and I have never had anything 'paranormal' occur here. So….
In these 'haunted' places, if I'm sleeping, sometimes I'll wake up…but can't open my eyes or move my body. Sometimes I can crack my eyes a little bit, and there appears to be this tunnel. Best way to describe it is like a vortex or a tornado. I can even 'feel' the tornado/vortex if I am unable to crack my eyes. I feel like I'm being held down, and I swear I'm hearing something screaming at me and sometimes it's only in one ear. It's not a threatening scream. It feels/sounds as if something is trying to contact me. The first several times this happened, I was filled with fear. I've gotten used to it and it doesn't scare me as much. I just try to push it all out of my mind when it happens.
Again, this only happens in 'haunted' places. And by haunted, I don't always mean someone told me it was haunted. My family, on my mother's side, has had an 'ability to see ghosts' to a certain degree. I might have inheirited it, as I can see thing/figures move out of the corner of my eye…even 'feel' things to a degree. I've been in places that I was told were 'haunted,' yet I didn't see or feel anything…. But the vortex only occurs in places where I have 'seen' or 'felt' something. Could be my imagination….could be paranormal. Thoughts?

My initial reaction is that it could be sleep paralysis.
Some people who believe they were abducted by aliens might actually be experiencing sleep paralysis.
Here is an article about it, and here is a second.
Hope this helps.

EDIT: Beaten! :)
Aside from the specifics of the "Tunnel" and only occuring in places reported to be haunted this sounds like classic sleep paralysis. Essentially, you're halfway between being awake and being asleep and still dreaming. Essentially, you *are* awake but part of the sensory input you're experiencing is from a dream. This happens occasionally, and in order to prevent you from acting out whatever it is you might be experiencing your brain shuts down access to your muscles, paralyzing you temporarily. The feeling of pressure on top of you is very common.
Often these types of dreams are recurrent, and this results in some people repeatedly having Alien Abduction dreams (where they are paralyzed and helpless, of course — because they really are and their brain is constructing a story around the fear that stems from that) which seem so extraordinarily real they don't believe it's a dream at all.

One night my husband had fallen asleep on the couch while watching TV. I woke up in our bedroom and heard him screaming so I went out to check on him. I had to shake him (violently!) to wake him up. When he finally woke up he couldn't move his body for a minute or two. He said that it felt like someone was holding him down and his chest felt very heavy. He did say that someone was yelling at him but didn't mention a tunnel. So, his situation is similar to yours, Random, but not exactly.
The only explanation I have is that maybe he was still dreaming even though he seemed like he was awake. Other than that, we have no clue what it was.

I have never heard of that! It seems like a totally plausible expalnation. Thanks.

Good info guys. That's a pretty logical explanation which could very well be what it is I'm experiencing. I've had sleep paralysis occur before that I have been aware of. There was no dream or strange occurences though. I simply couldn't move or open my eyes. It was more annoying than anything else. I've had this type in the 'haunted' places too. For now I'll stick with the sleep paralysis as the likelyness is much much higher.
I keep my mind open to other possibilities, however, only due to the fact that the actual tunnel only shows up in the haunted places. Now, if this tunnel suddenly shows up in the house I'm currently in, then the paranormal possibility will go out the window.
