Have you ever seen anything with your own eyes (since vids and photos can all be faked easily) that until now you can't explain away and could possibly be of a paranormal nature, and what was it?

Go to the Head Scratchers forum. I would like some more thoughts on that. Though Stephen has done a great job.

I've had one thing that I've never been totally satisfied with. It's not particularly ghostly, and I've got an explanation, just not a terribly satisfying one. Still odd.

In the mid-nineties, I was living with my parents and helping my father pick out a stereo system. I was comparing speakers by playing the same Mozart symphony at different stereo dealers. It was a piece that I knew well.

One evening I joined my parents for dinner, and my mother said, "Listen to this." She hit "play" on the answering machine, and the Mozart piece started playing. Someone had called and left it as an answering machine message– no voice, just the music. The problem was, I hadn't been leaving this number with the stereo dealers. None of my friends ever admitted to playing a joke, and it would be a rather abstract one.

The best explanation I've come up with? Coincidence. I've had music (not the same piece) left on my answering machine once or twice since then. It seems to be hold music, so I assume that I've been accidentally called by someone who had their phone in some kind of hold mode. The fact that it was the one piece that would make me go "huh" for years afterward is just lucky, I guess.

Update: It occurs to me that this doesn't count as seeing with one's own eyes. Does hearing with one's own ears count?

Stephen, what's not ghostly about that?  Clearly Casper hit the hold button by accident when he got the machine. He's been hard up lately, cold-calling to sell subscriptions of the Skeptical Enquirer.  You think the caveman who saved money on his car insurance is ostracized by his friends… Casper's ghost-family kicked him out of the house when they found out and now he haunts my garbage pail. That's how I know all this, btw. We talk sometimes when I throw out garbage.

On a more serious note, I have an "own ears" story as well. I mentioned this elsewhere in the forums but in brief I basically heard a "thousand whispers" type thing, twice in my life and once when I was completely alone in my house.  It was precisely the sort of sound you in "LOST" before the black "smoke" comes. Just the sound of what seems to be a lot of indistinguishable whispers. I tried to figure out where it was coming from but it seemed omnidirectional. Maybe I was having a pschizophrenic episode? I don't think I'm prone to those, and Casper assures me I'm perfectly sane.

I was covering (for a newspaper) a ghost hunt in rural Georgia about 10 years ago. It truly was a unique location: an abandoned, historic cemetery in overgrown woods that featured huge tombs and crypts amid towering trees and mossy vines. One of the allegedly most haunted locations (according to the ghost hunting group I was with) was at the tomb of a boy who had died at the age of 2 in the mid-1800s. The grave was at the point where the cemetery adjoined a slave cemetery and, reputedly, an Indian burial ground – quite spooky.

The ghost hunters were giddy that night as they captured orb after orb photo. As someone who had, at that point, been shooting professionaly for more than a decade, I didn't have the heart to tell them they were getting excited about photos of bugs and pollen.

I kept shooting, and near the aforementioned grave, I caught something that I'm still at a loss to explain – an almost solid, two-foot red "shape" coming up from the grave. It wasn't visible to the naked eye, wasn't something on the lens, wasn't a defect, etc. etc. I've taken thousands of photos, and have never seen anything exactly like it.

An Atlanta TV station saw my article and photo and interviewed me for one of those Halloween night features with a cheesy reporter. The piece featured the red mist photo – along with, of course, dozens of "orb" photos the ghost hunters had taken …

Once, when I was a kid, our family was staying at a hotel during a vacation. My dad and I went to the pool. He had to go back to the room for something and told me to stay out of the water until he got back.  Well, cutting to the chase, I got in and wondered too close to the deep end. I was right in the middle of the pool where the bottom drops down to the deep end.  I was beginning to fall  when a girl took my hand, keeping me from falling, and pulled me back towards the shallow end.

I got out of the pool and was sitting on the edge when I finally realized what had happened and that I needed to thank that girl for possibly saving my life (and not mentioning it to my dad!). But I couldn't find her. I asked the only other person at the pool if he had seen her, but he hadn't seen anyone (He had been reading the newspaper, so his not seeing her doesn't necessarily add to the story) .

Never did find out who the girl was. We were at the hotel for a couple of days and I never saw her again. There are plenty of nonparanormal/nonspiritual reasons why I couldn't find her. But it has made me more open-minded about things I don't understand….or maybe not even believe in – like ghosts.

EDIT: I've used the 'guardian angel' term on occasion to describe this story, but it's really one of those things I have a problem with. Why would I have a guardian angel to prevent me from drowning while others have sufferred greatly without one?

I….I'm thinking.

I grew up in a very close-minded family. My parents told me that if you believed in ghosts that you were allowing Satan to enter your mind and you shouldn't give him that much control. So, I was a HUGE skeptic… until I saw, what I believe, is a ghost.
I was pregnant with my third child and I had really bad morning sickness so I was on a leave from my job. One day when everyone else was gone at work and school, I was watching TV and relaxing in a recliner. I got a weird feeling (kind of like a prickling feeling on my skin) and I looked into the kitchen. Standing right in front of the sink was a young woman. She had blond wavy hair and was wearing a white, long-sleeved top. She looked like she was between 16 and 18 years old. At first I thought it was my daughter (she is blond and was 10 at the time) so I called her name. The girl looked up and then looked back down, kind of like she was doing the dishes. I was so freaked out because I knew it wasn't my daughter. I screamed at her and said that she shouldn't be in there and told her to get out. I got out of my recliner and ran for the phone so I could call my husband. I was shaking so bad that I could barely stand. I looked back in the kitchen and she wasn't there.
When my kids came home I was telling them what had happened and my son (who was 12 at the time) said that he had seen a kid in our house, too. He said he was in the bedroom putting some clothes away. I was in the shower and my husband had taken our daughter to Target. He said he saw a brown-haired boy about 7 or 8 in blue and red PJ's. The kid ran past the bedroom door. My son called out to the kid (thinking that it was my daughter, haha) and looked out the bedroom and saw the boy standing with a blond girl (I think it is the same girl that I saw). My son thought that he was just seeing things. He didn't tell me because he thought we would make fun of him.
I didn't know what to do so I went online and started looking up everything I could on ghosts. I found a site that said to tell the ghosts they needed to leave because they are dead. So, I did it. I have only seen the blond girl a couple more times. Once when I was pregnant with my 4th child I saw her standing in the bathroom and the last time was about a month ago. I work evenings and I was walking from my car to the house when I got off work. I felt like someone was following me. I got the chills and looked over my shoulder and saw a little bit of that familiar blond hair for a second, then it was gone. There was no one around (it was late at night) and I ran into the house!
I really don't want to see ghosts. I don't go looking for them. I never even believed that they existed until I saw that girl. Still, I am very skeptical about the paranormal. Every time I have seen that girl I try to figure out what else it could have been besides a ghost. So far, I have no answers.

I have one in the "Heard With My Own Ears" catagory as well

I do a lot of camping and backpacking, were I go off into the mountains for a week at a time with just what I am carrying.  Always with a group of people.

One weekend my group was pushing ourselves in a last training weekend for what we planned for a 80 mile week a few weeks later.  We were trying to to climb Mt. San Gorgonio in S. California.  It is a tough hike and about 25 miles for 2 and a half days.  On the first night, we made it to a campground about 8 miles from the trail head to Dollar Lake, which had a small area for camping.  We were tired, so we set up camp, ate then made a campfire to relax before heading to bed.

We were just chit-chatting around the fire when someone thought they heard something above the trees.   It is a thickly woooded area so you cannot see the night sky unless you go to the lake shore (about 1/4 mile from camp).  We all stopped talking and listened.  It was silent, but after about 5 seconds we heard it… it was above the trees I would say about 75 – 100 feet above us.  It sounded similar to a truck – a big 18-wheeler starting it's engine.  But we were 8 miles from the nearest road, and only 4WD vehicles could make it there even.

The sound went on for about 20 seconds then stopped.  We just looked at each other like "what the…" About a minute later it started again, but then the sound became higher pitch and "sounded" like it sped away at high speeds!

Never saw it.  We were all freaked and the rest of the night ever little twig that made a sound we were like "what was that!?!".   It was almost too stereotypical of what a UFO is supposed to sound like for me to beleive that is what it was.   I keep thinking we heard some sort of nocurnal bird.  But the sound did have a mechanical quality to it.  Also perhaps there was a ranger station nearby and the cabin generated that sound and it just echoed strangly in the canyon?

I guess I will never know exactly.  If it WAS a UFO, then I am REALLY angry that I didn't see it!!  I need to see it to beleive and that may have been my one chance Cry

I've found that being AWESOME is a full time job…

I have one but I don't know whether PN is the correct label

When I was a kid I was on the playing fields near my house with some friends, drinking and smoking and all the other things 6 year old do…….haha!

ANYWAY, it was well past dark in the winter, but suddenly it became light, as light as in the day, and it stayed that way for 5 minutes or so.

It was very weird and I've never had anyone give me any explaination for what it could have been

Any ideas?
