I want to stress that I don't really believe in ghosts and I don't experience a lot of weird stuff. i'm pretty even keeled and I don't jump to "ghost" at the first sign of something strange. But, basically, I'm pretty sure I have a ghost kitty in the house.

It started when I was lying in my bed about a year ago. Full disclosure – I have a cat and a (large) dog. I felt the cat jump up on the bed and walk towards me. I had my eyes closed (trying to get to sleep). I reached out to pet her and nothing was there. I brushed it off as either dreaming or the cat simply jumped off the bed.

Within the next 3 months, this happened about 4 more times. Each time, I could feel the individual cat paws as they came down next to the sheet covering me. Each time, no cat.

Then about six months ago, I was napping during the day. I was 90% awake, just lying there on my side, when I felt the footsteps coming up the bede towards my head. I made no moves but simply opened my eyes. There was nothing there and the footsteps stopped. I was fully awake so it wasn't a dream.

It has happened a few times since then but only one other "Strange" thing happened. Again lying in bed, I heard the cat running around. I felt her jump on the bed then jump off, then seconds later it happened again. It seemed like the ghost cat was playing with and chasing the real cat!

I've never seen anything and certainly never felt any fear. Could it be the sheets caught under me slowly unraveling? Could it be my muscles falling asleep from a bad position and reawakening? I guess so. But it seems odd that it would happen so many times in the same way. Plus, it felt just like the real cat so I could compare.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

As each of these experiences have happened with you in bed in a relaxed state – 90% awake as you describe, it's possible that you have entered a hypnagogic state each time. In this state it's possible to see, hear, feel, smell and taste things that are generated by the brain and not actually happening. The hypnagogic state is a semi dream state that overlaps waking life. Perhaps this is what you experienced.

I have studied the hypnagogic/hypnopompic state for several years and find the experiences fascinating.

I will try to do some research. I wondered if something like that was the case but I can feel the footsteps on the bed. Don't usually have that occur with dreams. Is is something like that movie Altered States?

I would be looking at this as being a possible explanation, too.  Anytime someone relates an experience they have and it turns our they are in bed or dozing, I have to look to this first.  Like Learjet, I've been interested in this for a long time and done a lot of tests and experimenting and some of the things I've experienced are ones that I'd swear were real…sounds, sights, sensations of touch and weight, etc are all very possible in this "in between" state.
