Did anyone catch the debut of Urban Legends on SyFy last night? I thought this was a brand new show, but after looking it up I found out that it actually started out on the Biography Channel back in 2007. No idea how that qualifies it as a Syfy "Original Series," but whatever.
If you don't know anything about it, the show presents three recreations of urban legends and asks viewers to distinguish the true tales from the false ones. Kind of like Unsolved Mysteries, except that at least one of the tales is complete rubbish.
Tonight's episode was title "Best Laid Plans." As the title would imply, each urban legend revolved around a plan gone awry. There was a story about a husband and wife having to seek refuge in their septic tank when a wildfire consumes their home; a mayor that has his house raided after he brings in a package left for him on his front porch; and a tale about a man that asks his best friend to help him commit suicide.
I'm finding it hard to give an opinion after watching this episode. I like the concept, but something with the execution of the show didn't sit right with me. There is a cheesy element to the show that I can't quite put my finger on. These are supposed to be tales of shock and horror. We're supposed to be creeped out by these tales, yet I wanted to giggle as the episode came to a close.
