We all know that reality shows are becoming the staple of TV.  Anything paranormal is riding high.

Plumbers, kids, hot chicks, Lorraine Warren and her hairdo, cops and now…ta da!

Paranormal Pooches!  Feast your eyes on this new show where you and your DOG can become stars!

http://www.realitywanted.com/call/4420-casting-paranormal-ghost-hunterdemonologist-with-dog-for-new-ghost-hunting-show

Are you a dynamic & gifted Ghost Hunter/Demonologist who works with your pet dog to uncover the paranormal? We want to talk to you! We are producing a new Ghost Hunting show and looking for a dynamic host with pet to travel the country uncovering the unknown! Looking for ages 24 – 60, male and female applicants welcomed. We prefer larger dogs like a yellow lab or golden retriever, but we'll consider smaller dogs.

If you are not a Ghost Hunter, do you have an animal that wigs out when it senses a presence in the room? We want to speak to you as well.

So, all you demonologists out there who have psychic dogs might want to give this a shot.

How dare they be prejudiced against small dogs???  Are they insinuating that only large dogs have psychic ability? What about cats?  Well actually, I can guess why.  Small dogs would be harder to focus the camera on, I'm sure.

Overlooking the demonologist part for now, I have to say that the absurdity of this show is beyond belief.  A discussion as to whether dogs do possess the ability to sense what we would term paranormal activity would prove very interesting, and a good topic for the Forum here.  But concentrating on this show's premise, it is apparent that the FACT that the sensory organs of dogs, particularly hearing and scent, are so much more developed than any humans does not seem to enter this picture.

If I slam a cabinet door a little hard, my neighbor's dogs start barking like maniacs.  And we hardly live that close to each other.  When I take my beagle outside, her sense of smell continues to astonish me time and again.  She also alarms me at times in the house when she will suddenly lift her head and stare at the back door, usually at night.  I can never hear or see what she is responding to, but I'm sure with her marvelous sense of hearing she is picking up on something well out of range of my own senses.

How in heavens name can anyone determine just what will set a dog off?  How can you train a dog to be a paranormal investigator?

My mind boggles…what next?  Paranormal Preemies?  Telekinetic Toddlers?  EVP sensing emus?

Discuss….

If 50 million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.

Oubliette:  Never thought of it before but based on this new show, maybe you and I should make a deal  with GH or even this new show.  As a sighthound, my greyhound can see the smallest thing at least a mile away and take it down even in the dark and your beagle, being a scenthound, could hear and sniff out the unknown.  I'm sure that you, like I, walk your dog and always uncover the unknown!  It would be a win-win and we'd get to travel the country with our dogs. Laughing

As we know, even though dogs have become domesticated, they still possess the instincts of their predecessors.  And all animals posses senses that are so finely tuned that it has been scientifically proven that they can sense the coming of earthquakes and other natural disasters.

I guess this new show proves one thing which I think someone mentioned in another forum.  It's usually attributed to P.T. Barnum but actually said by banker, David Hannum, referring to Barnum: "There's a sucker born every minute!"

You know one of the dogs will be a Bloodhound.  $20 on them bringing up this fun fact- "being so accurate that evidence trailed by a Bloodhound has been accepted in a court of law."

http://www.akc.org/breeds/bloodhound/index.cfm

As for how one trains a dog to detect the paranormal…I'm completely and utterly at a loss.  You need a known sample of someone in order for the dog to track it.  And if you have a known sample of a ghost…you really don't need the dog any longer because you've just hit the jackpot!  As for sight…I suppose one can train a dog to bark when they see a shadow, however that would just be insanely unreliable.  Lastly, hearing…as Oubliette said, no idea what would set a dog off.  So, yeah…at a loss for how one trains a dog to detect the paranormal.

However, that's not stopping me from applying.  I just adopted a 86lb Collie/German Shepard/Horse mix.  I got her to protect me from all the "Snow Beasts" here in Colorado.  I know she can detect ghosts and demons.  Sure, I can't prove it, but apparently that's not stopping the rest of them…

As for my credentials, I am now a demonologist.  I've been taking a good long look at demonology and it appears that the only true criteria for becoming a demonlogist is that one reads a great deal about the subject.  That's really the only common denominator that I've found.  I've read a ton of those websites, so by their own standard, that qualifies me.  And without passing judgement, I'm almost positive that I've faced just as many demons as they have.  Maybe more.  Yes…"more"…that's what I am going with.  Prove that I haven't…  Tongue out

Can you imagine it?  An undercover scientist/skeptic, with his dog, in the throws of a ridiculous paranormal show?  How funny would that be?  Dress all gothic-like, dole out warnings of how serious and dangerous this is getting (like Barry with Brian in the Scottish Castle when Brian was filming his own shadow…) and when they start bringing up feeble theories and sorry evidence, I just break out the Debunking Club of Science (with +2 Intelligence!) and start swinging for the fences?  Sweet…  Laughing

This just opens too many opportunities here:

Wonder how the dog will tell you if it's a residual, intelligent or demonic haunting?  Bark once for residual . . .

There could also be a potential collargate here.  Well, at least maybe a leashgate?

Will the dog be wearing a cap but wear it backwards or will it have K-2 meter or EMF detector attached to it's tail?

Well, at least we know the dog won't be afraid of bugs/spiders, flying, heights or it's shadow.

Wonder what the dog equivalent of "run dude" is?

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

The big logistical problem will be shaving the dog so he can sport the requisite tattoos.

Reveal:

Rufff, bark, bark, ruff, ruff, yip, yip, arf.

Very good Nosfer.  I was trying to work the tattoo angle but all I could come up with was an ear tattoo like my dog.  Darn it!  Love the spots on the carpet bit too.  Now if we could only get the dog to tell us a theory or two.

By the way, while investigating, will the dog throw in a few phrases in the local language?  Will there be a cat interpreting for the dog?  Should we worry about that as well?

Okay, I couldn't stop but one more question?  Will the successful pooch be opening a "dog house" that has claims of paranormal experiences for those other dogs that want to investigate while their owner's enjoy a vacation?  Imagine the scene in NH with rocking chairs on the porch, an owner by it's side and an opportunity to be set for life.  Aah!  It's a dog's life!

Love the cat interpreter!

When they investigate a failing PetsMart, will they be more likely to call it haunted than if it were just a run of the mill dog's house?

Will they try to pass off the sound of their own chain/leash as being ghostly chains in the basement?

Will they use a K9 instead of a K2?

Okay….next :)

K9!  Great one!

Will the dog have been a former member of the police force?

Will it be touching everything in it's site and/or picking it up and opening it to see what's inside?

Will the dog be able to tell if it's a cat howling in a location or perhaps a nose whistle?

Will there be another dog at the location to explain to the dog the history of the location and experiences?

Will there be pairs of dogs going out together?

Will one dog explain to the other the facts of the case correctly?

Will restaurants and commerical locations not allow the dogs to investigate because of the local health department concerns?

Well, actually the dog and one investigator will go that way……and Fred, Daphne, and Velma will go the other way :)

Well done Nosfer.  I'm out of here for the night.  Have to take the dog for a walk and test her for any paranormal theories then we're coming back for a "catnap" before the Titanic episode.  Enjoy!

Dog: "Bark, bark, bark, woof, bark, woof."

Revenant: "What's that girl?  Timmy fell down the well?"

Dog: "Ruff.  Bark, bark, bark, woof, arf, woof."

Revenant: "Timmy's possessed by the demons Melchiresa, Asmodeus, and Mastema and what we need to do is quickly assemble the team, get the cameras in place, call in a priest, and get premission from the Bishop to perform an exorcism in order to save Timmy's soul from eternal torture and damnation?"

Dog: "Bark, bark, woof."

Revenant: "Oh, this is insane and you just want to take your ball and go home?"

Dog: "Yip."  *tail wags*

OMG, you guys are hilarious!  But it just illustrates what a DUMB idea for a show this is.  Many thanks to Hannah for encouraging me to do a Google on reality shows when she mentioned about applying to Hot Chicks.  Probably never would have found this. (BTW, you folks in or near Chicago, they're looking for people with homes having supposed paranormal activity.  Here's your chance to get on the telly!)

Alicat-I would LOVE for us to apply.  Sounds like our pets would make a great investigative team.  Will they edit out my Beagle's baying?  Collargate–LOL, I'm still laughing about that one LaughingLaughing

We have to include my husband, though.  He had done some serious theatre acting in the past and would make a very believable demonologist.  At one point, he even had a priest outfit complete with the wing collar but auctioned it off on eBay many years ago.  But when he used to put it on, it made quite the impression.

Perhaps this show now illustrates that bottom of the barrel we've been wondering about as far as how low the paranormal craze would go.

You would be dealing with claims of ghosts and demons, so you may want your +2 ghost touch long sword of smiting….just incase.

Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear. ~Thomas Jefferson

Hold on here…just one minute.  I certainly hope that you are not insinuating that an Emu "can't" sense EVP's.  Show me the scientific evidence that supports this slanderous accusation. The Dromaius novaehollandiae is a noble bird that deserves our respect and admiration, not our scorn.  You have crossed the line, Oubliette!  I demand satisfaction!  It shall be pistols or swords at dawn!    Laughing

Actually, if I had my choice, I'd rather watch a paranormal show with emus instead of dogs.  Way funnier.  Can you imagine the look on the home-owner's faces when they hear the beeping of the truck backing up to their front door?  The gate comes down and 10 trained paranormal-seeking emus come racing out of the truck and into their homes.  Now that's just good TV…

Emus . . . hmmm. . . interesting.  At least they wouldn't hide their heads in the sand and they would have to drive to locations because obviously they can't fly!
