Is anyone in here beside Alex and possibly Revenant watching River Monsters or who would wish for a separate sub-forum to discuss episodes?  I watch it quite regularly and enjoy them for the most part.  What's more is that Jeremy seems to be better at finding and explaining "cryptids" than pretty much any other show out there at the moment.  Case in point was the sturgeon episode which impressed me.  I think by his going after creatures of "legend" or "superstition" and looking at them from a common fish angle is what keeps the show grounded and believable.

Sound off here about your feelings or ambivalence one way or the other to see if there is any merit to creating a sub-forum.

I realise my opinion is redundant….but I agree that Jeremy Wade's rational approach and analysis would be a healthy antidote to most of the other shows.

I  loved his conclusions about the giant earthquake-generating catfish of Lake Biwa.  He took the folklore seriously and then proceeded to find the real correlations that led to the myth.

And the cinamatography is excellent.

Nosfer, you were 100% correct that I do enjoy the show.  I think I've mentioned it a couple of times here at SV.  It's a surprisingly nice blend of zoology (remember the one when the bears were highly interested in what he was doing? Laugh ), marine biology, marine ecology, fishing, and critical thinking.  And as opposed to cryptozoology…he actually FINDS his quarry.  He produces results time and time again.  Have to love and respect that.

Two things that kind of concern me.  I'm not sure how many people here are into fishing.  I fully realize that you can kind of work the "he's searching for the unknown" angle, but…it's still just a cool fishing show (if that isn't some sort of oxymoron Laugh ).  Does it truly have a place here?

The second thing…it would pain me to no end to see it in the same ranks as GHA, FoF,  GA, MQ, and the rest of the schlock.  It has really nothing to do with the paranormal or pseudoscience.  No matter what the local stories say, do you really think that he doesn't know what he's fishing for?  I think he knows exactly what he's going for and just goes out and catches a couple.  Now that's cool, don't get me wrong.  I really like the show for that.  But…putting it in between PS and Ghost Lab just makes me queasy.

So if the exclusive forum for RM is voted down, then perhaps just a big thread in the Nothing To See Here forum.  "Freaky experiences that turned out to have normal explanations" seems to be a good place for it.  It's kind of the gist of the show really.

Either way, I'd contribute to the RM forum/thread.  The only problem with the show?  It always makes me want to go out to the Bass Pro ShopLaugh

I am seriously and intensely NOT into fishing….but I enjoy the show immensely, as do my friends and relatives who also carry the "don't get it" fishing allele.  So, if limited interest were the only objection, I shouldn't think it significant.

Also, I think discussing it would be useful in encouraging some who might not otherwise see an example of rational investigation.

But I won't go blue holding my breath….Smile

Only issue with putting it in the Nothing to See Here is that those two threads were/are set up to be for personal experiences of members.

We could do Other Shows, like we did earlier for Fact or Faked and then, depending upon response, break them into their own area.  My only concern there would be people hesitating to post given that it IS primarily fishing.  However, given the "local lore" aspect that he often starts with, it is akin to Destination Truth and he does a lot more as far as solving/explaining the legend at hand.

I'm sure he usually knows right what he's going after (I suspect the screening process for candidate fish ensures that lol) but if he explains a local legend/superstition in the process, hey, that's what we're all about!

The bear scene appeared to be a lot less contrived than most of DT's commercial-break-lead-ins Laugh
