So I know some of the smart-alecks on this site (ahem) have made jokes about what new lows we'll see when it comes to ghost hunting shows. Well, the elevator has officialy bottomed out. Last night on E!network the actual show "Hot Girls in Scary Places" made its debut.
The premise: three hot women (in this case USC cheerleaders) spend a night in a haunted location and do various "paranormal" investigations in their skimpy sleeping attire for a chance to win $10,000 if they make it through the night.
The saddest thing about the show (other than I watched most of it) was how using EMF detectors and other random ways to detect ghosts popularized by TAPS and some of the other shows is now accepted by much of the general populace as scientific ways to detect ghosts.
Not much more to say, except that the opening credits said the show was created by noted California (I believe) paranormalists the Auerbachs.

One thing I can confirm: Loyd Auerbach is a famous investigator that lives in California. He's currently on my suspect list for starting the whole EMF craze, but I can't confirm it.

And WHY was I not alerted to this ahead of time! :)
Edited…I see the rerun on E! just ended 4 minutes ago. Ah timing!

Oh I need to see this! Is there anywhere this can be viewed on the net? I'm afraid typing "hot girls" into various search engines has taken me to certain um…. "educational" sites that have nothing to do with ghosts.

Hot Girls In Scary Places…
There are moments in life that define us. Both individually and collectively. The pilot episode of "Hot Girls in Scary Places" is certainly one of those moments. Clearly, as a form of entertainment, it is revolutionary. Culturally, it not only approaches the status of "art" but perhaps even eclipses it. After watching this masterpiece, I learned a little bit about life, a little bit about the after-life, and a little bit about me. All I could do is drop to my knees and give thanks…thanks because I have finally seen the light at the end of the tunnel and that light, ladies and gentlemen, is Hot Girls In Scary Places…
Wait…that's not what I meant to say…
Absolute garbage that is so insulting on so many levels that I can't even begin to count them. The best quote I could think of to describe the show comes from the Movie "Billy Madison." In the scene, Billy (Adam Sandler) is in a debate and is awaiting the principle's commentary on it:
"Mr. Madison, what you just said is one of the most insanely, idiotic things that I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent reponse were you even close to anything that can be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul."
Yep, that pretty much sums up Hot Girls in Scary Places…

Let's not make a hasty judgement here.
While not having seen 'Hot Girls in Scary Places' the premise sounds more appealing than the 'Dave Tango wearing a Tiara' episode of GH.
These girls probably found as much paranormal activity as THE other guys we know so well.

That's a point. What's worse, plumbers looking for ghosts or cheerleaders? Three guys dressed in black or Rob and Barry? The squealing English woman and team?
The whole ghost hunting thing has become a circus!

It sounds conspicuously like the horrible (as in bad) Halloween: Resurrection. Nothing is new in Tinseltown. And if it is it's quickly remaked or made into a tv-series. Even if the remake is a remake. Or a sequel or prequel to a remake. Or a remake of a sequel. And so on. :)
It also sounds like a bad 80's horror movie… Oh wait, it IS a 80's horror movie. :)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086050/
(Of course, there are a bucketloads movies on the theme hot girls in scary places, in fact it is template for the horror genre, but this popped up due to it starring the ethereal Meg Tilly of Agnes of God fame. A criminally underused actress who retired from acting way to early. She is now an author, btw.)
One wonders if not the line between the paranormal field and the field of fiction is really there for some people.

I haven't seen this yet but based on all of the descriptions here, I find myself torn. On one hand, I'm a guy and any show with "Hot Girls" in the title will … let's just say "catch my eye". On the other hand, I worry that watching this crap would kill brain cells faster than scaling Mt. Everest without oxygen. Maybe the best thing about this show will be its role in the demise of the genre. If this isn't "jumping the shark", I don't know what is.

The phrase refers to a scene in a three-part episode of the American TV series Happy Days, first broadcast on September 20, 1977. In the third of the three parts of the "Hollywood" episode, Fonzie (Henry Winkler), wearing swim trunks and his trademark leather jacket, jumps over a penned-in shark while water skiing
Thanks Dr V. I did not know that's where the phrase came from. My family had pretty much quit watching the show by then – shortly after Fonzie became the 'all knowing' lead character and the story lines strayed into odd situations – apparently like Fonzie skiing.
For me, GHs' "Fonzie" was the K-II Meter.
Incidently, if this new series doesn't work out, I'm pitching my own idea: "Scary Girls in Hot Places" I'm going to camp out in the local Walmart parking lot with nothing more than a video camera and tape recorder. Turst me. You won't even miss the ghosts.

Upon reflection on this show, I have to say it is, in a way, accidentally brilliant. NOT in execution: the "scary place" was a relatively clean and well-lit hospital that imparted no sense of danger, and the paranormal investigations were neither scary nor original.
The brilliance also isn't in the premise — emphasizing the T and A in what TAPS does (sorry) on GH is kind of a no-brainer.
The accidental briliance is in that it shows just how worthless most ghost hunting shows have become for anything other than entertainment value — as pointed out, is it really more ridiculous to watch a cheerleader in her underwear use an EMF detector to hunt ghosts than it is to watch an upside-down visor wearing ghost enthusiast or a bunch of green-olive eating plumbers use the same methods??
Oh well, it is what it is — my only hope is that "Hot Girls" isn't a rating hit that spurs GH to adapt some elements of the show – I can't think of anything more disturbing than the thought of Jay and Grant hunting ghosts in their boxers …

This is a new low, esp. taking into consideration MTV is currently casting for a similarly themed series.
Serious paranormal investigation is never going to recover from the proverbial gutter now.
Guess "The Skeptologists" won't see airtime either. The other half of the equation will never receive a chance, mainly, I guess, because it doesn't "sell". Nobody wants their bubble popped when such scientific stuff like the K-II, FLIR, IRs etc. give viewers deliberately undisputed "evidence".
What a bleak future.

Hi, holmesgirl! Love the name–are you a fan of Sherlock? One of my fave characters from way back in my teen years. Anyway….
Seems you're too late for this one:
http://www.gotcast.com/casting-calls/E-Hot-Girls-in-Scary-Places-Pilot/52758
Producers of "Laguna Beach" and "Paranormal State" are casting three hot friends to spend the night in a haunted location as a pilot for E! Networks.
There are a few things in life as exciting as experiencing the terror of investigating the paranormal and haunted places. Most who dare take on the spirit world are experienced paranormal warriors, who have prepped, studied and armed themselves for battle with the nether world. Enter the HOT GIRLS armed with the latest in scientific paranormal equipment (and the hottest new shoes.) These cute girls take on the scariest, weirdest, and most bizarre situations with the best intentions to uncover the truth, give peace to the spirit and not to freak out and leave screaming. Their mission a simple one: Investigate and look Fabulous doing it. Each episode the girls will spend the night in a rumored haunted place surviving with only with their wits, energy bars, the latest in paranormal equipment.
P.S. Those so inclined can go to the link and feast your eyes on the hopeful contestants. Some truly put their assets first, if you get my drift.
(Although I may post this in a humorous vein, I am still appalled and saddened at the debasement of paranormal investigation. One wonders-how much lower can it go?)

That's my biggest bone of contention with what is going on. I take the field very seriously and what is currently going on with all these shows just makes it that much harder to have any credibility in your efforts. Me and my pet chimera are very upset with the directions this seems to be taking :(
Unfortunately, ratings are king. Ratings trumps science. Ratings trumps facts and honesty.
