Happy birthday for yesterday HollyDolly.

I'm curious about the show if nothing else, but unless it's available on the net somewhere I won't be able to see this one.

There are ghosts and other spirits out there, some friendly, others not so.

Look at what has happend with some of the tours of the Covenanter's Prision and Greyfriars Church Yard

in Edinburgh ,Scotland. People have been scratched, etc. by the Mackenzie Poltergeist, if it is Mackenzie .

People have been attacked when ghost hunting by ghosts or other spirits.None of these people including TAPS say any protection prayers that i ever see on tv.I know there are groups who do.

Even though many people try to approach this from a scientific angle, you still can't get away from the fact that there is also a spiritual element to this as well.I think most people want to know if there is life after death. If so, what is it like?Do we see our dead loved ones again? What do we do there in Heaven? And certainly no one wants to go to hell.

I have not seen evidence to substantiate the claim that there are definitely "ghosts and spirits out there."  There is a possibility of such things, which I believe should be examined under controlled scientific conditions.  Yet, at this point in time, the phenomenon remains just a possibility.  That being said, I am uncertain of how one can determine the intent of the phenomenon ("some friendly, some not so") without having first proven its existence.

As for people being "attacked" by ghosts, I find this highly debatable.  We only have the word of the "victim" that they did not scratch themselves physically, were scratched by another person in their party, or were accidentally or intentionally scratched by some physical object present in their environment.  The evidence of such reports are only the scratch marks themselves.  I view it as the equivelent of someone finding a shattered vase on the floor and then blaming a ghost for smashing it.  In this example, the only evidence to support the claim are the pieces of the shattered vase.  The rest of the claim is subjective and unsubstantiated…much like the scratch marks are.

Protection prayers…I do not know how this factors into scientific methodology.  I shall not make fun of this aspect as it pertains to personal beliefs and religion.  I only will say that I do not understand how saying words will protect one from anything.

The questions in the last paragraph, again, deal with personal beliefs and religion.  A scientist cannot answer any of them.  Perhaps a theologian or a philosopher would be better equipped to.  However, what a scientist can do is gather data, examine it and theorize on why and how particular objects are relating to their environment.  It is from this that we can possibly gain some insight into a very mysterious phenomenon.

Side-note:  HollyDolly, first Happy belated Birthday.  Also, I felt that your post deserved a "counter-point" in perspective.  You definitely have a right to your opinions and beliefs.  Yet, since this is a skeptical website, I felt that another view was needed.  It is not a personal attack in the least.

HollyDolly,

First, a belated Happy Birthday.  Hope you enjoyed UP.  I hear it's really a cute and funny movie.

Been to Greyfriars Kirkyard and no experiences for me.  Scratches?  Nope.  I think what happens sometimes is that people read and want to believe so much when they go to these locations that they psych themselves into getting "into the mood" and they scare themselves into getting a feeling or misinterpreting a sound that may be foreign to them but normal to a location.  If you were there and never heard any of these stories or read about them, none of that would ever cross your mind.  As far as scratches, if scratches were from ghosts, I must have been around plenty of them as I'm always finding one or two and can't remember how I got them.  Nothing paranormal there.  Just sharing my experiences.

Ok…I saw about 20 minutes of this show.  Um…here are just a few random thoughts:

It was interesting to watch.  The other ghost shows, when they go with the night vision, the image that we see is black and white.  Theirs is green and white.  I much prefer the black and white.  Easier on the eyes.

I couldn't hear the two girls all that well.  Maybe they were just whispering.  Maybe their mic's didn't work all that well.  Maybe I've just learned to tune out "tweens" over the years.  In any event, I couldn't always make out what they were saying.

Overall, they get a bit jumpy and excited by things, which is to be expected.  One of the kids actually does a decent job in staying level-headed and seems like he wants to debunk things.  I won't make the effort to watch the show, but if it happens to be on and nothing else is…I might watch it.

But…they do get highest marks in one category.  On their website (which I had to follow Oubliette's link since I forgot the name of the show Laughing ), click on "Case Files."  A little screen will pop up describing the case.  I saw a part of the "Lincoln Heights Jail" episode.  They show a little schematic of the location with dots signifying where they obtained something abnormal.  You can zoom in and out of the schematic as well as drag it around.  Then if you click on the dot, it shows you the evidence (whether they think it is something or not).  I liked this a great deal.  It is infinitely more than any other ghost show on TV does.

Kind of a shame that it takes a bunch of kids to go with full disclosure of the evidence.  Man…GH doesn't even show the temperature range, time stamps, or settings on the FLIR anymore.  They just "zoom in" on the picture now.  That just drives me crazy!  It is so insulting.

16 year olds are allowed to driver over there? That's more scary than ghosts.

The case of the mysterious moving chair, with drag marks and all…

I dunno, it's more fun watching adults making fools of themselves I think. With kids not so much.

I get the feeling the producers have done all the real work while the kids are just along for the ride. I guess I might have enjoyed it more if I was 13. But I'm not, so I didn't. Credability – they have none.

Next!

Yeah, you're right.  I caught the show, by chance, from the beginning yesterday.  I lasted about 2 minutes.  I couldn't continue to watch it.  It's just not that interesting.  And you're right again about watching adults making fools of themselves.  With the kids, I have this overwhelming urge to yell "Stop this and go back to studying real science!"  I still like the features of their website that I described in the previous post though.

Not much to watch at this time of year so I took a look at the Queen Mary investigation in episode 2. Only one thing stood out from the whole thing – the "get out" EVP. There was no mistaking what it said.

I'm puzzled, I've heard a few EVPs say that now. It seems to be their favourite saying.
