There are ghosts and other spirits out there, some friendly, others not so.
Look at what has happend with some of the tours of the Covenanter's Prision and Greyfriars Church Yard
in Edinburgh ,Scotland. People have been scratched, etc. by the Mackenzie Poltergeist, if it is Mackenzie .
People have been attacked when ghost hunting by ghosts or other spirits.None of these people including TAPS say any protection prayers that i ever see on tv.I know there are groups who do.
Even though many people try to approach this from a scientific angle, you still can't get away from the fact that there is also a spiritual element to this as well.I think most people want to know if there is life after death. If so, what is it like?Do we see our dead loved ones again? What do we do there in Heaven? And certainly no one wants to go to hell.
I have not seen evidence to substantiate the claim that there are definitely "ghosts and spirits out there." There is a possibility of such things, which I believe should be examined under controlled scientific conditions. Yet, at this point in time, the phenomenon remains just a possibility. That being said, I am uncertain of how one can determine the intent of the phenomenon ("some friendly, some not so") without having first proven its existence.
As for people being "attacked" by ghosts, I find this highly debatable. We only have the word of the "victim" that they did not scratch themselves physically, were scratched by another person in their party, or were accidentally or intentionally scratched by some physical object present in their environment. The evidence of such reports are only the scratch marks themselves. I view it as the equivelent of someone finding a shattered vase on the floor and then blaming a ghost for smashing it. In this example, the only evidence to support the claim are the pieces of the shattered vase. The rest of the claim is subjective and unsubstantiated…much like the scratch marks are.
Protection prayers…I do not know how this factors into scientific methodology. I shall not make fun of this aspect as it pertains to personal beliefs and religion. I only will say that I do not understand how saying words will protect one from anything.
The questions in the last paragraph, again, deal with personal beliefs and religion. A scientist cannot answer any of them. Perhaps a theologian or a philosopher would be better equipped to. However, what a scientist can do is gather data, examine it and theorize on why and how particular objects are relating to their environment. It is from this that we can possibly gain some insight into a very mysterious phenomenon.
Side-note: HollyDolly, first Happy belated Birthday. Also, I felt that your post deserved a "counter-point" in perspective. You definitely have a right to your opinions and beliefs. Yet, since this is a skeptical website, I felt that another view was needed. It is not a personal attack in the least.
