Although Ghostly Encounters (seen on Biography Channel) is done from an interview standpoint, I still find it interesting. You listen to a first-hand account, while some portions of the story are portrayed by actors (but without the melodramatic flair that 'A Haunting' uses). I believe the show is filmed in Canada (judging by the way everyone says "abowt" and "howse". LOL
Regardless, it's entertaining, and no one thrusts their opinion in your face. I appreciate their laid-back attitude: This is my story, take it for what it's worth, and form your own opinion.
Is anyone else a fan? I figured the show was worth mentioning.
Have a pleasant week everyone.

Haven't seen Ghostly Encounters. I'll keep an eye out for it and try to catch an episoode. I've seen A Haunting a few times- not a big fan of it, but sometimes it's interseting to listen to other people's accounts of their experiences, and then try to pick it apart with more rational, non-paranormal explanations.

This is a Canadian production. I like the show, and frankly if the stories are true-meaning that the people involved truly believed they saw/heard/felt what they did–it often gives one pause. My husband also enjoys watching it, and after each story we will discuss possible explanations for what supposedly happened.
As I stated elsewhere, something is going on that we can't explain. I had my own very strange experiences when growing up in an old house and know something happened to me, although I can't explain it.
That said, I find the show entertaining and worth watching, if only for the Ghost Story type of chills it can give the audience. And as reerob described, it is not overstated. The simple presentation does not overwhelm the viewer and also does not scream "fake". I do find the stories very intriguing, but wonder how much of that is due to the actor's presentation. Perhaps hearing it from the actual people themselves may not be as impressive. I do look forward to watching it each week. It's a change from the usual ghost hunting format.

I have watched that show a lot and really enjoy it. I respect the presentation style…having the actual people who experienced things sit and recall their stories. Of course, I take the stories with a grain of salt, but enjoy most of them as well as the flashes of re-enactments to their stories that are not overdone with acting…mostly blurry, spooky imagery. I believe all new episodes start this week….there are a lot of the older show that may be available on demand. Tune in and enjoy if you can.

This is one of the few shows I can watch without becoming "annoyed" or feeling that my intelligence is being unsulted lol. As you said, they show brief, blurry reinactments as the story is being told… not the ridiculous theatrics as on "A Haunting". I've always loved a good ghost story, and this show makes me feel that I'm at a friend's house, listening to him tell me a spooky story. I record all episodes because my work schedule is insane.

Hmmm, Oubliette,…not sure where I stand on this. While watching ghosting hunting shows, we typically discount the paranormal investigators personal experiences and only consider the physical evidence. This show is solely focused upon the personal experiences without a shred of physical evidence to support the claims.
So…what is to be gained from watching this show when we do not even consider such things while watching GH, GHI, GA, etc. ?
Also, do you feel that it actually hurts the paranormal field in the sense that it is appealing to the "mystical" as opposed to approaching the paranormal from a scientific view?

I believe that we enjoy watching the show for nothing else but entertainment. Everyone loves a good ghost story….at least they don't pass it off as "evidence" of anything…just stories. I don't think anyone here actually thinks it is a show to help the paranormal field in any way…just to stroke interest in it.

Brenny has summed up my feelings about this show. I don't look at it as anything more than listening to people telling ghost stories while sitting around a campfire. For me, the truth of what they are saying is not really an issue in this type of show. It's solely to give one a few chills and sometimes make me jump at a sudden noise in the house!
It doesn't seem that this show is running in the same vein as the other ghost investigation shows out there. There is no investigation, really, just the storytelling. Which is why I guess I like it. It's actually a break from the other shows in that it's sole purpose seems to be to provide some scary entertainment. And some of the stories, true or not, certainly do that!
So surprisingly, the metaphysical aspects of some of the stories doesn't bother me at all. Now when those beliefs are transferred into what is supposed to be a serious investigation into an alleged event–that's when it becomes a problem. Here people simply state their beliefs as it pertains to their experiences, and I simply consider it as their way of interpreting what happened. You could say I take off my skeptical cap for a while and just let myself get scared for the pure entertainment value of the production. I just suspend my analysis for a bit. Now, when it comes to GH, MS or PS, my skeptical cap is glued to my head!

I agree Oubliette. I work my brain overtime for approximately 45-50 hours per week (often more), and sometimes, light entertainment is just what I need.
Also, since we are posting under the topic TV SHOWS, I was under the impression (as I am sure you were) that we were in the appropriate area to discuss programs relating to the paranormal. For me, exploring the paranormal is one of several hobbies… nothing more. As you said, "everyone loves a good ghost story".
Is there anyway in which we can exchange emails? You and I seem to be like-minded, and I'd appreciate the opportunity to talk with you sometime.
Have a good Thursday!
