This summer on the East Coast, we have had a great deal of thunderstorms.  This past Friday night we had a particularly violent one which caused many of us with pets, generally not affected by storms, to lose a good night's sleep.   So, when I saw this article online, I was particularly drawn to it.  I had never heard of these gigantic jets before and this article explains why.  Discovered in 2001, since then there have only been around 10 observed.  This article contains pretty rare photos and a video that were taken near Duke University.

Well…so much for flying a plane above the storm clouds to avoid trouble… Laughing

Thanks for the link Alicat.  I thought it was pretty interesting that they found the lightening jet while looking for sprites.  Sprites, in their own right, are pretty cool.  Here's a great page from NASA about sprites:

Interesting. I wonder what model camera they used?

There was a fantastic show on lightning (as well as tornadoes and hurricanes) that I DVR-d but erased after viewing and thus don't know what channel it was on.  Absolutely fascinating!

Not only did they show Sprites but also an interesting fact is that when a lightning bolt is headed towards earth, another bolt is actually rising out of the ground to meet with it, thus creating a strike.  So lightning does not just travel downward.   It can go outward, like sprites, or upward from the ground itself when a bolt is heading towards Earth.  Nice to know that lightning was coming up from the ground surrounding the house during that awful night.

I say awful only because it terrified my dog.  Otherwise, like some other strange people, I find it exciting.  Heck, I'm one of those idiots that would chase tornadoes and also try and head down to the beach when a hurricane is going by.  Adrenaline junkie, I guess.

If 50 million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.

Here in Kansas, although in Western KS, as well as Western NE, there are a lot of people now video recording the tops of thunderstorms as they approach and after they passed over the area to video the backside to record sprites and jets.  Many examples have been recorded as a result of this, they have to record as they come or as they have passed over, due to the fact they need to see the top of the thunderstorm, ideally, the backside is best as the anvil cloud isn't there to block most of the top of the clouds.  I found a page that does list some photo specifics for Learjet, speed, type of camera I think, etc.  The ones recorded from the space shuttle are cool, I do wonder about the mention of the mega-lightning that was recorded at Mt. Arecibo as that is the site of a radio telescope, not a visual one that I know of…hmn.  I am also one of those silly characters who has chased tornadoes, but this ceased in about '95 after our car died and we couldn't afford a new one, or a new, used one to be correct.

I was lucky enough to see several tornadoes near Manhattan, KS (The Little Apple) by the town of Ogden, then a larger wedge shaped tornado near Keats, KS, one man was injured in that one, broken arm and a lot of sheep killed, also before I moved down here, I saw two tornadoes on the ground at the same time in South Dakota, they were my first actual sighting near the town of Chamberlain, they were EF0 probably, pretty weak, EF1 at most, but doubtful, ironically in the same area two weeks later, there were tornadoes again, total count over 10 in those two weeks, all weak, but still cool since they were over open land, I always get a laugh when someone on a video I have (Tape) says "Look, it's hitting where it did the last time!" like it's the same tornado, come back to wreak havoc on them in revenge or something, but as it was awesome footage, I can excuse them :-) I need to xfer them to disk, most poor quality as saved from chaser to chaser over time.  Severe Weather has always fascinated me, I guess because when I was young, it scared me growing up in South Dakota and wanted to make me understand it, so I wasn't as afraid.  I think this same thing happened with the paranormal, as a young teen had an experience up there that scared me quite a bit, so hence the interest in the paranormal, try to learn and understand.

@Learjet the link to some sprite photo settings, if you haven't found it.

Thanks TasCat. Just curious about their cameras. I have  captured sprites with my Mintron frame integration camera, but it's getting a bit dated now and I am after something a bit more sensitive with lower noise.

Nice catch!  Yeah, I forgot to mention that they have to be after sundown, well, when it's a dark dusk at least, beside from some distance as your nice shot shows.  Just to think, some people thought they saw them, but no one really believed it until evidence was irrefutable.  Hmn, sounds familiar! ;-)

That's a very good point actually. They are visible to the naked eye from the ground, but are well into the red spectrum and the viewer would need to be dark adapted and have good red sensitivity to see them.

Even though I've photographed them, I've never seen one with my eyes.

So very true!  I think hoodies are a proven fact too! :-P  Not to dis' the scientific method, by which means I wouldn't do, but wanted to get my little dose of humor out early, so I can go watch Jennifer Love Hewitt in Ghost Whisperer, when she smiles, her eyes get just like the smily eyes of anime cartoon girls…lol.  I've seen evp's in there so far, but still waiting for an emf detector!  Hmn, Big Time Hollywood have a little more sense than small time?  Will wait and see, don't fault me for watching the show now, I love Star Trek, but I don't think the warp drive exists! Or Hortas and Vulcans! ;-)
