Not sure which category is most appropriate for this one, but it's going here :) Interesting article on surges of brain activity just before death.

For some reason I have this picture in my head of Grant hiding just around the corner….

This article really hits close to home to me today. My aunt, who was a beautiful person both inside and out, just passed away on Tuesday of this week after being critically ill for 3 weeks. She requested that her ventilator be removed because she couldn't fight any longer, she said she was too tired. We (all her family and a few close family friends) were surrounding her as she was going, holding her hands and telling her we loved her. She started to smile at the end, and we were all a bit puzzled as she had been very quiet and just sort of staring off for the two hours since they had removed her ventilator. My mother asked her why she was smiling and my aunt just said "beautiful". Then about 5 minutes later she passed away, still smiling.
The practical side of me believes that it most likely was an experience like that mentioned in the article, just a neurological result of lack of oxygen. However, the spiritual side of me would sure love to believe that she was seeing a beautiful place and family and friends that have gone on before her. May you rest in peace Gladie…I love you!

My sincerest condolences to you and your family Angelayo1970. Although this article might be the "technical" reason, I feel the same as you. Having gone through the passing of a very close personal friend very recently, I would like to believe she was seeing a beautiful place and the family and friends that had gone before her as well.

Does this kind of surge happen at other times in life too, or is it just when the brain is deprived of enough oxygen? Like when doing something that takes a lot of concentration or thought?
And Angelayo, I like to combine the spiritual and the scientific. Why couldn't your aunt have been seeing something truely beautiful and wonderous and her brain react to the impact of it? Just because spiritual things happen doesn't mean that science can't recognize them too.

Sure can, only I don't know what to call it or what triggers it. There are, for want of a better description, "superconscious" states of brain activity where the mind goes into a heightened state of awareness. Without drugs all on it's own.
Would be nice if we could choose the time and place for such an outburst, like at exam time.

Would that be like the bursts of adrenaline that some people have experienced during extreme situations? I wonder if there is a way to tap into that, like meditation….. oommmm oommmm oommmm ….It's not working.

Thanks Frau…I'd sure like to believe that is true. And I agree, I think that the scientific and the spiritual can co-exist; just doesn't seem to be too many people that think like that.

I really think that actual science will only prove truth. Therefore, the truth that we know to be true just may not be proven yet.
