A mysterious boom is thundering through Georgia…

http://www.ajc.com/news/myster…..55208.html

And here's a local news article with a video as well:

http://www.11alive.com/news/lo…..mp;catid=3

Hmmm….so…let's see if we can figure this out for ourselves…

No current civilian aircraft can reach the speed of sound.  The military has no logs for any military flights at that time.  Military planes that can fly with that kind of speed can only do so in designated zones, which none are near that location.  Lastly, nothing unusual on any airport radar.

I'm sure UFO people are all aflutter…Laugh

My guess?  A military aircraft.

Why fly a new stealth aircraft over populated areas?  Tons of reasons.  Alternate emergency route.  They wanted to test "live" radar.  Who knows?

Oh, and yes…stealth and supersonic seem counter-intuitive.  But…all our new aircraft are going to have stealth capabilities to some degree, no matter how fast they go.  It's a changing world…

Anyway…anyone have another guess?

Considering the distance it was heard over, it's got to be either a supersonic aircraft or an entry from space. I'm unaware of anything else that could do that.

Three words missing.  "In Level Flight"  Laugh

I've got a first-hand description here of what was probably a meteor entry back in the 1800's that was heard by patrols and by soldiers at the fort.  As Learjet says, such can be heard over quite a distance.

Camp Brown 7th Mar 1874

On the 7th last the Post Surgeon was about 10 miles south of the Post when attention was attracted by a glare of reddy light upon the earth, when a large meteor was perceived in the last fourth of its course from NW to SE.  Looking at his watch he found it was 5,53 PM.  He then heard the report of what seemed to sound in volume like a 14(?) pound piece of artillery.  It seemed to follow the valley north towards the east.  At the post the meteor was as apparent and the noise like the report of a 32 lb piece still seeming some distance north and passing east.  Capt R.A. Lorrey being 24 miles north of thpost also heard the same report but still much exaggerated to the north and passing east.  (a faint repetition of report was heard next evening)  Note – The instance(?) in brackets is rather vague M.R.

A few of the words are hard to make out as this is handwritten but you get the general idea of the distance this was heard over (at least 35 miles north-south, probably more like 50 miles considering how loud it was to the north).  There is another one that I have found in the records from Fort Halleck that describes a similar incident in 1864.

Hmmm…I don't think "in level flight" even has to apply…

Check out this link about the Gulfstream G650.  That article was written a few months ago so they may have be able to tweak this and adjust that and hit the barrier.  Oh, and who makes that plane?  Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation.  Why does that matter?  Well…their headquarters is in Savannah Georgia.  So…I think that plane becomes an instant player in this.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned this yet?  Not sure.  I could not verify that the plane has been tested in Georgia, only that their HQ is located there.  Yet still…it seems quite odd that the author would write about no civilian aircraft being able to crack the sound barrier when there's one being built right in his own state.  It took me maybe 45 seconds on Bing to find it.

Nosfer – I did like the old meteor entry that you dug up.  Although personally I'm still leaning towards aircraft (military and now even civilian), I'm not willing to rule out anything at this point.
