There have been claims in the past that the source of the legend had been found. Another possible one has been located in southern Spain.

I was going to post this the other day with some snide remark that Giorgio Oompa-Loompakalos was racing to the scene, but got sidetracked. The article I read seemed promising, if you assume that Atlantis actually existed.

Existed and Existed Exactly As In Legend are two different things, though. Many legends likely have a basis in fact, but often the original is much less grand and more down to earth than what it gets built into.
