At least it was a small one and (according to the article) wouldn't have dented the surface…although I bet it would have hurt like hell if it had bopped you on the head!

At noon EST today, 11/17/09, NASA will be holding "a media briefing to discuss the upcoming launch of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, mission. WISE is scheduled to launch Dec. 7, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. Once in Earth orbit, WISE will scan the entire sky at infrared wavelengths, unveiling hundreds of thousands of asteroids and hundreds of millions of stars and galaxies."

If you wish to watch NASA TV streaming video or downlink information, you can access this information by going to http://www.nasa.gov/ntv.  For the latest information about the WISE mission, you can visit http://www.nasa.gov/wise.

Just another case of government inefficiency.
Do they not realize they could get the same results if they just duct taped Barry's Full Spectrum Camera to a rocket.

Wellllll, you DO know that Barry is the only one who knows how to work the camera, so you would have to launch more than just the camera…..

Poor Barry. Frown  All I can say is we still wouldn't have any viable pictures in space either and we would really be doomed.  I also don't think his road-kill hat would fit under the helmet.

Here's an interview with Michio Kaku, Physicics Professor & Author that took place this morning regarding the real time observation of what they are calling the "asteroid spotter" if you missed the NASA presentation at noon.

Nice one…I'm waiting for someone to suggest that there are more and more of these happening and that it's a prelude to 2012

What an awesome sight!  My Dad and I saw a great one many years ago, during one of the meteor showers.  It looked like the size of an orange as it streaked across the horizon.  We still talk about it.  No sonic boom though.

This is the best one I've managed to photograph. I was very sick that night so I just hung the camera out the window and let the computer capture frames.
