Ok I work in a converted old factory building.  The fourth floor is where my office is, the ceiling is vaulted and is all glass.  The wall on the outside of the building that my office is against is all glass.  Last Saturday I was there for about 6 hours.

During my time on Saturday I kept hearing what I thought was someone at the printer in the cube right next to my office.  My office is open to the wall of glass in the back and does not have a ceiling, so I can hear a lot and also enjoy the view.

I got up to go and look and see who was there and no one was.  It was about that time I hear the noise again, well I was standing right there and could clearly see no one was there.   Something caused me to look up and to the right, when I did I noticed the top venetian blind moving ever so slightly and knocking against the rod that opens and closes the blinds. It was not the whole blind moving just the bottom 6-8 inches.

It was not that noticable as I don't think it moved back and forth more than 2-3 inches, but that was enough.  Oh and it was the heating and cooling vent slightly above the blind that caused it to move.

On the same day about 1/2 later again I am in my office and I hear a soda can open and again I think it is a cube or two away from me.  A bit later I got up to stretch my legs and took a stroll around my unit and again no one was there.  I walked further down (20 cubes, I counted) and there was my friend Linda drinking a can of soda.  She was over 100 feet away from me, but the noise carried that far and was clear as day.

So when Kris is helping Tango by whispering from the corner of one room and he can hear it in another that should be a lesson to all of us.  Sound can travel in odd ways.

When traveling in Ireland I visted Clown Make Noise (phonetic spelling as my Galic is awful).  It is the site of a great church ruin.  They have what they call the whispering wall.  The arch on the door way is made in such a way that if you whisper to it, the sound bounces back at you much louder than your whisper.

That's a good one, Robbin. I did a little Wikipedia work– I think you mean Clonmacnoise (very close!)

Here in the SF Bay Area, at the Exploratorium museum, they have whispering walls that are deliberately engineered so that you can hear a whisper across a huge, crowded expanse of space. It always seems spooky when I hear it.

Stephen thank you as you got the spelling right!  I just found my booklet that I bought there over the weekend.  The site is beautiful and if ever there go for a visit.

Hearing something so close has to be freaky as you are not expecting it at all. I had never experienced anything like the Whispering Wall until then.  It is so amazing.

But you can see how someone could easily mistake a natural occurance.

Accoustics can certainly mess with you sometimes. Another interesting experience is standing next to the focal point of a large satellite dish. They don't only focus radio waves. At that point the accoustics are just weird. It's hard to describe.
