Seems the shuttle will be kept flying a few more missions and that some Congressional members are willing to try to keep it going into 2012…and as we all know, after the end of 2012, we won't need it because everything will be destroyed then!

Without the moon / Mars initiatives the manned space program doesn't really serve any long-term purpose. WITH those initiatives it represents the potential for some of mankind to survive a global or even solar apocalypse… but surviving the destruction of a home planet is over-rated anyway.

I'm hoping this reprieve is the first step toward bringing some of those things back to the forefront. Perhaps with the next-next generation of craft actually built in space and with an expanded ISS serving as a spaceport. Missions outward could then start from there rather than the more costly method of having to get into earth-orbit first.
