I think they are only down a couple million dollars….and they are accepting donations at SETI.org

The problem with SETI is that unlike other astronomy research, there's no spinoff technology or discoveries that come from it. Either they detect alien signals or they don't. It's a funding black hole that no one except an eccentric entrepreneur would throw their money into.

They could report ghosts there, have GH come in and do an investigation and give it some publicity Laugh  Seriously, though, Learjet is correct, it's either a "we find it or we don't" although you'd think possibly there would be some advances in signal processing but those just aren't buzzy enough I suppose.

Although, when you look at projects that are just black hole I'm sure there are quite a lot of others out there.

Shutdown of Alien Telescope Array

explanation: I have bad eyes due to cataracts, I honestly thought it said "li" at the time and thought I would have a little fun…sorry, I didn't realize it had gotten so serious that such a post would be frowned upon. I couldn't explain this when you locked the topic.

That was 'el' 'el' not an 'el' and an 'eye'…which makes the rest moot.

Are we sure?  I smell a conspiracy. This Tarter woman is pretty attached to the concept of intergalactic life, maybe a Grey in her closet?  I'm just sayin'.Wink

Unlocking this one to try again.

An update on the array, it appears that fundraising efforts are in play:

With more powerful telescopes, satellites, and space probes venturing further out into space, it would make sense that the SETI dishes should be aimed at any exoplanet that is found. If they could be like Earth, then maybe they would be inhabited.   I'm of the belief that we could not possibly be alone in this vast universe. Giving these dishes something to really aim at, instead of essentially just space, may advance the project further. Like Learjet said in one of his previous posts, they need to give it something else to do along with the project because it needs to be more than a black hole and it sounds like they have goals to do just that, like partnering with the US Air Force in tracking space debris.

Imagine…searching for hidden life.  Why don't we go off on these people for wasting money?  Telescope array like that has to cost big bucks.

Just pointing out the dichotomy.  Don't you see it?

Dichotomy?  Oh…sorry.  I just thought it was a poorly-veiled, ridiculously weak attempt at being snarky.  My apologies.  Yes.  Good one.  Yes…oh…I see it now.  Fantastic.  Brilliant really.  Impressive…I would expect nothing less…and regretably nothing more…

And you know…while I'm here…remember way back in the day when both you and I would frown upon people continuing their arguments through different threads?  Hmmm…whatever happened to that?  I guess those good old days are gone, no?  A shame really…
