CERN announces they believe they have recorded subatomic particles breaking the light speed barrier.

This will be an interesting one to check back on in about two months or so.  The precision/accuracy of both the time and distance is paramount.

Looks like CERN detected this months ago and has checked and re-checked dozens of times.  Now it's up to parties outside CERN to verify the data.  But yes, now that they have announced their findings, the next couple months are going to be interesting.

Maybe they haven't proven faster than light travel, but rather have encountered inter-dimensional travel Laugh

I want to see the results of their K2 meter experiments and whether the flashlights came on themselves….

I always felt the "standard model" was missing something anyway.  *yawn*  Besides not wanting to unify well with quantum mechanics, I was hoping for something more exotic to it all, something that would mean the laws of physics can allow for more than we currently assume they do.

While still far-fetched (damn you Heisenberg!), imagine beaming people around -ala Star Trek- as a neutrino stream; and instead of beaming you ship to planet, it stretches from one star system another. Fast.. and trippy.

hah, I punned.

Traveling faster than the speed of light is going to play hell with the headlight manufactuers.

Then again I guess you could slow down on occasion and see where you'e been.

Some "mundane" explanations of what may have happened:

Lol…I was on one site where there was a very long discussion about the GPS inaccuracy possibility.  From what I could gather, a lot weren't impressed with that as a possibility.  However, I have to wonder about things like accuracy if you take a measurement at the surface and project the location down a km.  Is that enough to cause an 18m error?  The general thought is that there was no shattering of the relativity theory, but that the reason for what was seen is still unknown.
