This week, when GH travels to visit the Pennhurst Asylum in Pennsylvania, we are treated to another case of a site that has already been visited by another TV-team. Some of you may remember that GA also investigated this place.
I don't recall many details of that investigation but you can be assured that, at some point, some nefarious EVP threatened Zak's hair with bodily harm.
Among the reports the GH team will be investigating are sounds of piano playing and dismembered torsos. Personally, I've never been impressed by these types of investigations and I suspect that will not change during this episode, either. I much prefer the older, classic, investigations where they actually tried to help someone (or at least put on the appearance of it) At least when visiting the home of some everyday person there wasn't as much pressure to declare it haunted for the benefit of the tourist trade. ie (from the Pennhurst Asylum page):
"The Pennhurst Ghost Tours, open to professional and amateur ghost hunters, has been a huge success, with recordings, photos and accounts of physical contact throughout the Pennhurst complex. So, if you want to get scared, come to Pennhurst Asylum. You may even witness the supernatural…whether you want to or not."
Something to keep in mind during their investigation when they claim to hear sounds etc:
"Concrete floors, tile walls and concrete ceilings create an incredible echo effect at certain intersections. In fact, I have looked behind myself several times to see if there is someone following me a few feet back. The echoes are so distinct you can hear whispers from hundreds of feet away."
Tonight's Drinking Word is: "Hello?" (Better get out an extra bottle)

Don't remember too much of this episode after the 83rd "hello" but I did find amusing one of the consequences of showing the investigations out of order.
Last night we got the big explanation of their new black van and what they could do with it. Obviously this was the first one they filmed for this season. However, it wasn't the first one they showed, making me snicker a bit when they talked about the van in such detail…a van that was present last week and which they did not mention.
I also found interesting the amount of graffiti in the tunnels and even upper floors. Tells me that these aren't the most secured locations around.
Ghaleon, you really need to get hold of that video your group shot so we can see what a real distortion in the laser grid is supposed to look like.
The sounds in the tunnel…some of those were very similar to ones I've heard (I _do_ like exploring tunnels) and were water drip effects. We also can't rule out animals, especially cats, down there and I can't really trust these guys to be able to chase one down to prove definitively that what Amy and Adam heard was NOT a small animal.
If they could hear cows mooing while down in the tunnel, they could have mis-interpreted a LOT of other surface sounds, too. In short, not a secured site, thus great potential for earthly contamination.
I think Amy violated a few of the 5 (or is it 3) core TAPS values in this hunt.
I'm liking Steve and Tango more and more relative to the rest of the teams. They seem to be the only ones who really are putting any effort into what they are doing. Steve getting upset about the window slam almost seemed like a venting of some long-held frustration over things.
All in all not a horrible episode, just a lot of evidence of how unscientific the investigations are that this group carries out. I didn't detect any real hoaxing, more like misinterpretations and jumping to conclusions that favor the paranormal. After giving some praise to Steve and Tango, I have to take some back from Steve with his comment about "because it's unexplained means it's still paranormal" What was funny was Jason made a comment (in this one or at the end of Congress Theater right before it) where there was something that was unexplained but not anything that was paranormal. Again, we come down to the lack of any metrics and criteria.

The building may have been closed up after the graffiti was created. At least that's the impression I got from the caretaker.
And just what have they done to that K-II meter?

I got that impression from what the tour guide said, but I've learned tp never underestimate the determination of a kid with a can of spraypaint A place like that is a magnet for a certain age range and over time there become ways to get into places like that, despite "2/8-inch" bars…did he really say that or did he mean 3/8-inch. There hadn't been too many "hellos" by that point so I don't think I was hearing things.
The thing that bothers me with their souping up of various equipment (perhaps just adding a knob in this case) is that we have no idea how they alter the device itself. How does it affect its operation. If equipment is not OTS it should be described specifically as to its principles of operation. I'm sure they would claim patent protection or something like that as an excuse not to give any details, but then I shouldn't be expected to immediately buy into what I see.
Rather interesting readings they were getting. The pulsing was odd, almost like it was stuck in a continual "boot"?

I agree, Steve and Tango are the only ones I really like.
I own Ghost Hunters Seasons 2 and 3 on DVD. One day I got bored and decided to take a trip down memory lane and watch a few old episodes. Boy, how things have changed. Not every location they went to was haunted. In fact, most were declared not haunted than haunted. Now it's so dramatic. Borderline ridiculous. One thing that's always bothered me about Ghost Hunters: the camera guys. If someone points down the hallway and says "OMG LOOK A SHADOW" why are you filming the person pointing? Gah.
If we could combine the filming format of Ghost Adventures (carrying their own cameras, no extra camera crew) and the cast of Ghost Hunters (Zach Baggins kinda scares me…) maybe we would have a somewhat decent ghost show? Maybe…?

They are going to experiment next week with no production crew when they investigate the USS Olympia. Should be interesting to watch.

They do that sort of thing when they are picking up RF – radio waves. EMF is usually more constant, less flickery. The K-II is also quite "deaf" to EMF compared to some meters. Most K-II anomalies will be radio waves.
About the mod, if it's just to the switch I don't think it would alter the performance much as there's already a long battery lead hanging off it. However there's already been 4 revisions of the thing, so no guarantees performance will be the same with any two units since it's not calibrated to any industry standard.
I'm surprised they didn't try and communicate with the K-II "anomaly". It's not like they haven't done that before, receiving answers to questions before they finished talking!
The Ghost Hunters are as inconsistent as the equipment they use.

"If that was you, get real close to this thing in my hand and then back away real fast and then get close and back away and do that several time…Geez Jay, look at that"
In Reveal,
Jason: "I can't explain it, we were definitely in contact with something down there"
To their credit, they did seem to discount it, but without any real reason given.

Well, you know in those promos they only show you the slightest of incomplete clips….
