Steve and Tango are back as the gang investigates James Thurber's house. Hopefully this means Britt and KJ will have gone back to their day jobs. James Thurber, by the way, is best known (at least by me) for "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."

"Time" in this episode refers to a clock face that apparently opens by itself. It is rather interesting that it happens while Grant is out of the room. Interesting in that the cameraman didn't follow Grant, but rather stayed next to the clock. Of course, we don't see it opening that time, but we do get to see it right after it opens so it has to be as we're told…right? Be sure to listen to the voices in this scene…something sounds different and maybe in the context of the personnel dynamic of the full episode it will become clear.

The house seems to "qualify" as haunted mainly because of an incident that he (Thurber) later wrote about in one of his stories. He claims to have heard footsteps walking around and then running up stairs. In the history of the house there is the story of a man who killed himself after pacing and then ran up the stairs to do the deed. Was this literary embellishment or not?

Interestingly enough there once was a link on the Thurber House site that talked about ghosts. The URL was:

http://thurberhouse.org/house/ghosts.html

Snippets of text on that page indicated that "You also can take a haunted tour of Thurber House and other ghostly Columbus…" That page is no longer there and defaults to their home page.

http://www.thurberhouse.org/ghost-writing-workshops.html

DOES still exist and includes:

'Come back to Thurber Center on Sunday, Oct 24 for the celebration party where there will be crafts, tours of the “haunted” Thurber House and you can see your ghost story acted out! The night wraps up with light refreshments and you’ll receive a booklet with your library’s ghost story in it.'

"Haunted" is in quotes originally…not my doing. While there appears to be some background with this "steps" incident, I can't help but get the feeling that this investigation is another promo. I wish GH (and all of these shows) would just be upfront and indicate whether or not the place has such tours as part of the business. This is another reason why I prefer when they do a private house.

Remember those days?

I to miss the private house days. When GH goes to investigate some place such as James Thurbers house then you can mark it down that this estate has ghost tours. I can think of a bunch of places that I have GH at that I knew they had ghost tours at, yet you never hear it mentioned.

A clock face that opens by itself really does sound impressive to me on any level. My dad does a lot of work on clocks and there are times when older clocks can do things that one might think is paranormal but he just laughs it off and says "that's an old clock for you". So I always find it funny when I hear anything paranormal about a clock.

I think TAPS has an agreement with a lot of these places. They go to a place that has ghost tours and they find a lot of evidence. The building then gets a lot of attention and the ghost tour prices go up.

Speaking of the acted out ghost stories, wasn't this estate once featured on a television show that promoted this aspect of the tour? I could be wrong but I remember once seeing a show where they were showing places to visit that had a theatrical feel to them. This place I believe was on it because they talked about a famous estate where you could act out your own version of Clue basically. Them putting haunted in quotation marks seals the deal for me that this place is for entertainment purposes only.

Interesting, earlier this morning Google Cache and the Way Back Machine were coming up blank for that page. Has pages going up to 2008 now.

He claims to have heard footsteps walking around and then running up stairs. In the history of the house there is the story of a man who killed himself after pacing and then ran up the stairs to do the deed. Was this literary embellishment or not?

"My own experience in this mysterious area came one night, about 1912, in a house my family lived in at 77 Jefferson Avenue in Columbus . . . . It consists of the heavy steps of a man walking for nearly a minute around our dining room table, while I was in the bathroom upstairs drying my face with a towel before going to bed. At the time I was a junior at college, studying journalism, and a non-believer in ghosts. In fact, the word ghost never crossed my mind that night. I thought a burglar or crazy man had got into the house. My father and younger brother were in Indianapolis and I knew that neither of them would talk silently around that table. I roused my older brother from sleep and brought him to the head of the back stairs that went down into the dining room. As soon as he reached my side, the steps ceased. Finally, in something like terror, he asked me, 'What's the matter with you?'

"I said, in a loud voice, 'There's someone down there,' and up the stairs, right at us, two at a time, came the heavy steps of a running man. Without a word, my brother ran into his bedroom and locked the door. I stood there until one more step would have brought the invisible thing into me and then, by a reflex, I slammed the door at the head of the steps. The next day I asked the corner druggist, who had been in business there for thirty years, if he had ever heard any strange stories about 77 Jefferson Avenue. He said, in surprise, 'Didn't you know about the steps that go around the dining room table and run up the stairs?' I then began a long research on the business, even slept downstairs several nights alone, at the proper hour on the proper night of the week, but never heard the steps again. It turned out that several families had previously moved out of the house because of the steps. I turned this into a comic story called 'The Night the Ghost Got In' nearly thirty years ago, but now I am telling it factually. . . .

"My careful researches, more than forty-five years ago, revealed the story of a man who had lived in that house, had walked around the dining room table, then ran up the stairs and shot himself in one of the second floor rooms. He left a note describing his final behavior, but it was destroyed by the family. I found out, and the police have never heard of it, and I promised I would not tell about the note. . . . A strange voice, anonymous, had telephoned him at his office one morning and told him that if he went home around ten A.M., entered the kitchen door, and stood quietly in the dining room, he would hear his wife making her daily assignation with her lover and this is precisely what happened."

When the Delusional Duo ("To the Ghost Cave Boy Blunder") first examine the clock the hands are set to what appears to be 12:15. Later when the face apparently opens on it's own, the time reads around 10:50. This would seem to indicate that either about 10 or 11 hours had passed between the two events or more likely that someone had opened the face and reset the hands. During the reveal watch closely as Grant closes the face, you can see that the latch pin does not align exactly with the socket. If the face was not completely closed it may have a tendency to pop open on it's own.

The dis-aligned latch is at about 2:27

I still don't see how they think that is a voice they caught when the floor boards are squeaking during the second investigation. They claim the floor is moving like someone is stomping on it and then they claim in the middle of the stomping you hear a voice. The only problem is when they replay the "voice" its just a squeaking noise created by the floor boards while their walking, I mean these are old floor boards and I am sure everyone has heard this noise at one time in their life. That could be in the top 5 worst excuses for having an EVP ever.

Over the last 6 seasons we have seen/heard everything from loud bangs/knocks/pops/booms; doors slamming shut [off cam]; alleged disembodied voices from quieter ones to very loud ones; doors open/close and other objects move; and so on….and have seen or heard a number of team members jolt; jump; twist rapidly; flinch; let out a bit of yelp or a loud OMG, WTFrig etc in reaction to such occurrences. And yet the cam guy did not even flinch.

But we are to believe the tiny 'click' noise, that may or may not have been the click of the clock face cover opening — which occurred right after the cam guy, who was filming G thru the doorway at the time, had oddly decided to pan left and down at the table [which save the miniDV had nothing on it] so he was now looking in the opposite direction of the clock — was enough to not only cause the cam guy to quickly turn but let out a loud 'Oh My God'?!?  Which to me did not sound the least bit geniune, more of a canned OMG. And I like how he not only very briefly paused [second at best] on G when he swings back to look at the clock, but stayed put…he didn't even take a step back or over, IF he was so shocked/surprised you'd think he would've at least moved over a step or notabley jolted.

Also, during Analysis the footage had an overall veiling glare and a larger spot glare at one point [over his elbow and near face of the clock]; clock face was washed out during a good part enough at times that the numbers couldn't be seen; and there was a battery icon & time indicator plus a video time stamp at the upper right. But at Reveal the veiling glare was all but gone, spot glare occurred briefly but wasn't as obscuring, and the battery icon/time and time stamp were no longer displayed [I watched on-line so not sure if that had anything to do with it, if it was cut-off for some reason?].

Now maybe they tried to clean the footage up a bit, adjusted the light/constrast etc to try and reduce the veiling glare and sharpen things up hence the quality difference. But if you keep a close eye on the time stamp [during Analysis] you see it go back in time a second or so as the face cover is opening…it's very brief, best seen in slo mo or frame x frame. Why would it do that?

It appears to go back in time because they do a splice and show it opening twice. I've seen them do this for drama many times and wouldn't read much into it. If you look close, the zoom distance changes, and the face opens twice. Drama or poor editing but nothing sinister.

Quality…well, I think this may be a case where one may be a filming of the monitor showing the footage (first one is definitely that) and the other is direct play of the tape.

From what I can tell he was a free-lancer. I THINK he had another line when Jason got back in the room and they sat down…that was the voice I mentioned in the first post to pay attention to and it was cleared up when we hear the "omg"
