Hannah, no and not even a television set except the one in the pub! Surprised  And, my guess is the "free phone" is free only if you are calling a moose or someone local but otherwise Money mouth!

What's also interesting is that the snowmobiling, snowshoeing, carriage/sleigh rides, golf, and horsebackriding, spa, etc. that are listed one minute away are all the activities at the Mountain View Grand Resort just down the road.  They really have no activities at the Inn except billiards for which you probably have to pay.  Anyone could drive down the road and see the fall foliage and amazing views and not spend the money to stay at the Inn for those prices.

Revenant, do you still think this place will last after the show goes off the air?

Ok…kind of threw me because I think you're responding to my post in another thread.  But, since we are all here now… Smile

In my other post, I brought up basically two points.  One, they are popular, like sports stars, which will help them.  Two, a "haunted" theme would help them in particular as opposed to other "haunted Inn's and hotels.

That being said…for your answer, I went to the highest power that I could…my Magic 8 Ball.  The answer…"Don't Count On It."  And I agree with the answer.

1) Business Backgrounds- They are plumbers/service technicians.  What background do they have in owning an Inn?  It's like me buying an Inn.  What do I know about running a successful Inn?  Probably about as much as they do…which puts them into some deep water right off the bat.

2) Location, location, location- I made the analogy of J&G to sports stars.  It is true that they currently enjoy great popularity.  However, there is a difference.  Sports stars begin in major cities.  High traffic, access to airports, within driving distance of a ton of things.  J&G picked something wayyyy off the beaten path.  I don't like that aspect at all.

3) Cashing Inn- I also don't like the idea of a haunted Inn as the first big investment, mainly for the first two reasons.  What would I have done instead?  A restaurant/bookstore/ghost-hunting equipment and clothing store type of thing (all in one place) in a major city like New York.  Give it a big Ghost-Hunter theme.  Maybe add in other Sci-Fi type of things as well.  Then branch out to Chicago and L.A. .  Then franchise it out.  Much easier to do, better locations, easier access, and people don't need to take a "special trip" out to no-man's land.  I mean if you're go to sell-out, then, as they say…"Go big or go home."

4) The "Haunted" theme- As I said, they have the best shot of making this type of theme work as opposed to other inn's and hotels.  However, the place just doesn't lend itself to it.  No documentation to back up claims.  And…it just doesn't "look" haunted.  Grandma and Grandpa's Inn just doesn't send chills down anyone's spine.  The "theme" is good for J&G, but the property doesn't sell it.

So, in the short term, it will do "ok."  In the long run, they might be in some trouble…

If their Ghost Hunters TV show goes on for another 20 years then the inn willl ride on the popularity of that at least.

Sorry Revenant.  So many questions and answers in so many threads!  Didn't mean to confuse.  Laughing

Learjet:

Yes, I think as long as they are on the air they will have some success.  However take a look at the Mountain View Resort background.  Exchange the last owners of The Spalding Inn who went bankrupt and the dates and situation are almost identical.  The bankrupt owners even had a pool and tennis courts which the current Inn does not and they couldn't make it.  It took the Mountain View Resort $20 million and a 4 year historic renovation with "good bones" to become what it is today.

"The last functioning years of the Mountain View House were fraught with stress and uncertainty. In 1986, after several summers producing marginal financial returns, the hotel closed its doors. In 1989, all of the contents of the hotel were put up for auction. The Mountain View House was purchased in 1998, by a young entrepreneur, who worked long and diligently to recreate the splendor of the golden days of the grand resort hotels in the White Mountains. The new Mountain View Grand proudly reopened its doors in May 2002, after completion of a $20 million historic restoration."

I love New Hampshire but most vacationers who are visiting are going for fall foliage viewing, winter sports or a family resort vacation and that's what the Inn is trying to promote on their home page.  However, you can go and stay anywhere in New Hampshire for fall foliage and winter sports but the Inn is a room and only a continental breakfast with J&G as owners.  Actually, it's really a glorified and expensive motel (without a pool) now.  Granted, the location is beautiful once you get there (as most of New Hampshire is as well) but the time and expense to travel to this out of the way "motel" is costly just to stay or a night or two because J&G own it.  Even Jason was lamenting the time and lack of places along the way to eat as he traveled there himself on Wednesday.  After the initial glow fades, the only way it will survive will be J&G stoking the fires by Twitter and Myspace.  If all those people who have said they were going to book a room, actually had, the 36 rooms would be sold out from here to eternity and they are not.

On another note, I don't know if I would be so proud as to send my guests to another hotel down the road to have fun and I, as a guest of another hotel, would feel odd going to another place I wasn't a paying guest at to enjoy their facilities.  I don't know, maybe it's just me, but it feels rather tacky.  Here, pay me Money mouth but go down the road and enjoy yourself at another hotel?

J & G are victims of their own egos.
They thought that, 'If we buy it, they will come.'

I give it two years before it is shut down again.
Maybe a little longer if they bring back Brian and his Eastern State sheet.

Oh no! Surprised  I'm so disappointed.  Guess I'll go to one overseas.  Maybe the Ancient Ram Inn?  Oh no! Surprised That isn't even listed!  Poor old Humpy.  Okay, I'll take Borthwick Castle because I like Edinburgh and love to sleep with blankets over my head!  Scary stuff! Tongue out

Well, if any of you get to San Antonio, you can stay at some of the haunted hotels downtown.

You have the Menger, St.Anthony,Crockett, Guenther and Emily Morgan to choose from.

The Menger is the oldest. It's said there are tunnels that run from the Menger over to the Alamo.

It's most well known ghost is Sallie White. She was a maid there back in the 1870s or so, who was murdered by her husband. This is all documented in papers of the time. President Teddy Roosevelt is said to hang out in the bar, and there are other ghosts as well. There was a bloody murder in the Guenther Hotel in the 1960s,and the room it happend in is said to be haunted.

You can visit River Center Mall, and walk the River Walk. Various places to eat downtown. If you rent a car, you can visit the Witte Museum on Broadway, and the Botanical Gardens on Funston and North New Braunfels. There is also the San Antonio Museum of Art. You can go out Interstate 10 to Six Flags Fiesta Texas and also go to SeawORLD on the other side of town. You can see the old Spanish Missions, which are still active Catholic parishes, or visit some of the natural areas like Government Canyon.

Outside of San Antonio, you could stay in New Braunfels at the Faust Hotel or Prince Solms Inn, and go to schlitterbahn, the big waterpark there.

In spring, drive out to Gonzales where the first shot in the Texas Revolution was fired and see the museum and old homes there.Or go to Gonzales City Market for bbq.And look at all the beautiful wildflowers.

Oh yeah, if you stay in San Antonio you can drive to Luling and Lockhart for  real Texas bbq or go to Port Lavaca or Corpus Christi.Corpus has the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington.

Go to Fredricksburg, north of San Antonio, and you can see the Chester A.Nimitz Muesum of the Pacific.

Have some german food, and look in the various shops. The famous admiral grew up there.

Best of all folks, no snow. Don't want to sound like a travel agent, but there are various haunted places here you can go to and have places to eat and things to do were you aren't isolated from a lot of stuff. The Spaulding might be okay for adults, but with kids along, there's nothing for them to do.At least here there are places they can go.And if your budget minded, you can visit Playland Kiddie park on Broadway, near the San Antonio Zoo.
