To be clear, this is an e-mail from a friend. I did not stay at the Spalding. Nonetheless, this is interesting.
I'm back from the pseudo-legendary Spalding. Legendary being relative to your status as a Ghost Hunters (TAPS) friend or snark-monkey (holding snark monkies in highest regard, of course). I happen to be the latter. Longest story short, my girlfriend's fam is from the area and we decided to kill two birds with one stone by staying at the Inn.
It's nice. In a very grandma, white bread sort of way. The furnishings remind me of staying at granny's house but it's clean. Girlfriend said "sparse" was a more fitting term but I'm a minimalist and don't mind a generalized lack of clutter. The rooms are listed as suites but that's stretching the term suite. The rooms are small, unless you're European and then you'll find them sizey. The bathrooms are tiny by my standards. I'm a big guy and the showers were tight. You'd think a man as big as Hawes would consider the big people!
The important question is on your mind, I know. No, we didn't see anything paranormal. In fact the place wasn't even creepy. I watched the show they did on the place and I noticed that they had to have been using bad lighting to create an effect during the walk through. The Inn is very well lit (probably for insurance reasons) but on the show it was shadowey and creepy. The second floor hallways looked skinny and dark on the show but they're very light and airy. I didn't see the inner workings of the kitchen. The dining room was average. The food was hit-or-miss. Girlfriend's meal was great, by her account. Mine was dry and decidedly not haunted. I am bummed about the not haunted part of it all. I didn't really expect ghosts but without them there's no draw to the place. It's an inn. They sell it like you'll see Hawes and Grant hanging out with the team stalking spirits. It's an inn.

Thanks for posting crispycritters. Just as we all suspected. " It's an inn." Will be interesting what will be posted after this TAPS boot camp weekend.

chrispy,
http://dictionary.die.net/suite
I think definition #2 best describes your friend's experience.
However, having stayed at many European hotels, the word suite meant, a closet to sleep in and not having to share a bucket to crap in.

Thanks chrispy. Not surprising. It's just an Inn and, even with the renovations, an old building. The former owner's website even mentions the rooms are very small. The carriage house is supposed to have larger quarters but I have no idea the dimensions of either place. I'm with Blinddog on this one. I've seen places, even "en suite", overseas that would make even the rooms in Lampoon's "European Vacation" look like a spa vacation.
As Hannah said, it will be interesting to see the posts after this weekend! I'm sure we will hear all sorts of "stories"!

I wrote my friend back to ask him some questions and here are his responses. His responses are italicized.
Was it worth the money?
It's a decent place to stay.
Were there people "ghost hunting" via twitter? LOL
There were and it was annoying. I don't know about them twittering but we had to open the door and nag people that were talking in the hallways. It was about one in the morning when we heard banging in the halls and found a group hanging out with handheld equipment. There was one guy with an EMF meter. Girlfriend overheard some chick claiming to be a psychic while we were dining who said she felt a woman in her room but we laughed that off. She was staying with her daughter so duh. You know?
Could you tell it was owned by TAPS/GH or was that downplayed?
They're selling it as a TAPS Inn, no question. There were flyers about upcoming events and staff mentioned it. There are little nods to GH and TAPS around.
Your g-friend is from the area. Has she ever heard about the Spalding being haunted before?
She said no. She's lived within 20 miles or thereabout most of her life. The closest she ever heard involved a building that Hawes and Grant down own as part of the purchase of the inn. Her dad has lived in the area for sixty odd years and said the news on TAPS buying the place was the only rumors he'd ever heard about hauntings there.

I'd be pissed if I shelled out good money to have my sleep ruined by wanna-be ghost hunters!

Could you ask your friend, the times for the complimentary breakfast? May sound like a silly question, but one review of the Inn said that it closed at 8 am. Said reviewer thought that ridiculous, and was a bit peeved.
Yep, crispy, me too with the sleep disruption. I would have certainly let the front desk know. I should have been told upon check-in that there would be people in the hallways in the middle of the night making noise, waving instruments about and such. After all, it was the front desk that alerted Britt by phone about the "strange noises" in the hallway.
OR if you didn't mind getting woken up, have a little fun with the hunters.

Good idea Hannah. "if that was you, knock 3 times" – knock knock knock. And don't forget to take your cell phone. When you hear them in the hallway make a call to set off their EMF meter.

Yeah…but…but….maybe her and her dad are skeptics, you know? And…and…their negative energy prevented them from seeing or hearing about the ghosts for all those years. Yeah…that's probably it. Because…this one time, at band camp, I heard that if enough skeptics get together…you know, like two or more, they create a Vortex of Common Sense that literally sucks the shadows and spirits and faries and ghosts out of the Spalding Inn. That's why, to this very day, skeptics aren't allowed there. It's true. There's a big sign on the outside that says "No Shirt, Critical Thought, No Shoes…No Entrance." I'm not sure what that means but I know it isn't good. I hate skeptics! *throws salt over his shoulder and spits twice*
And again…a "snark monkey" is….?

That kind of news would haunt me. Maybe he just hates the paranormal.

Revenant, do you still think this place will last after the show goes off the air?
In this economy, there are not enough people in the New England area to keep this place afloat after the show departs the airwaves and, like any trend on overload, it will fade. In less than 12 years there have been 3 owners, 2 of which went bankrupt even though they had amenities and a wonderful reputation as being a peaceful, family and wedding oriented vacation destination. After hearing what is happening now, who, other than TAPS fans, would book there now? They would have to sustain a full house 365 days a year which means a lot of TAPS fans would have to be shelling out the big bucks to stay and be prepared for the New England snow and ice. I can't imagine skiers, who usually fill rooms in seaon, putting up with the scenario chrispy has shared. Just imagine, this couple didn't even go during a weekend event and this is what took place? I guess only time will tell but with people being able to write reviews, word of mouth about this type of behavior will put the average person looking for a vacation location off of the Spalding Inn no matter what beautiful the pictures they put on their website. I have a lot of friends who don't have a clue who Jason and Grant are or have even heard about GH. The ones that have heard of GH, don't watch.

Congratulations Oubliette for having 400 posts, you win an autographed pair of Jason Hawes's tighty whities, seruptisiously obtained by Logisti during an astral travel session to the Spalding Inn(always wondered where he disappears too).
I know, I know, only one word can express the thrill you feel right now.

Hannah,
Here's the restaurant, pub and kids menu with opening/closing times. I hate to say this but this menu is same old/same old – boring at best. http://www.thespaldinginn.com/2kingsrest.html
Per the site, it's not a "complimentary breakfast", it's a "continental breakfast" which is usually tea/coffee/juice, muffins, bagels and fruit on a sideboard and you either take it back to your room or sit in the lobby eating it. Actually, if you go to the main page of their website and look at the series of photos, as they scroll by you will see their set up for the continental breakfast. It's a small cart and a table with 2 coffee/tea thermoses. Here's a link that sums up a continental breakfast:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-continental-breakfast.htm
Also, from another site:
"Q: What does "Continental Breakfast" mean?
A: It means you're hungry by 10:30. A Continental breakfast consists of croissants, rolls, or bread, perhaps some butter, jam, and/or marmalade, and coffee, tea, or, if you make enough of a fuss, hot chocolate. It is the breakfast of choice in most of the Continental European countries, where, apparently, they do not consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day."
A list of the amenities (other than the restaurant and pub):
By the way, they are not full up past today (except July 4th) and they only have 36 rooms?

alicat, What do the guests do for food on Mondays?
I've never heard of a hostelry, excuse me inn, that the dining facilities wasn't open 7 days a week.
Do they kick the guests out on Mondays?
$3 for a side of mac & cheese! Now we know how they're paying the mortgage.

Blinddog,
Well, there are 5 other places with a 10 mile radius. 2 are in town @ 15-20 minutes or so away, 2 a little closer to the Inn and 1 within 10 miles but that's as the crow flies so to speak. I know some restaurants close once a week, however, it's an Inn with a restaurant not just a restaurant and they have clients staying the night. They should at least have something available and open for them to have a meal.
However, they might want to consider one minute down the road at http://www.mountainviewgrand.com. Check this place out. Wow! Here's the dining link which has a link to a more interesting menu. http://www.mountainviewgrand.com/dining.asp I don't think you'll find any GH/TAPS groupies staying there. I have a feeling they wouldn't put up with it. Check it out.

Farm raised elk? Wouldn't that be the equivalent of a cow with antlers?
Beautiful place though.
A lot nicer than that other place down the road.
Wonder if the Mountain View Grand's wine cellar is equal to the Spalding Inn's.
Naw, they quit making Bali Hai and Night Train years ago.

Thanks for the links alicat. 8am to 11am & 5pm to 10pm , Saturday and Sunday
That explains it. The continental breakfast closes when the restaurant opens. WHAT?! No mini coffee pot in the room?
