For reasons I won't go into here because I'll just get depressed, hubby and myself were not able to attend the Monster Mania event in Cherry Hill, NJ this year.
My brother did go as he loves models, obscure DVDs etc. He tried unsuccessfully to get Alice Cooper's autograph as the wait was too long. (Note: AC is really a great guy who, early in the morning, was signing autographs for free out in the lobby. He stated that he hated charging $ but the powers that be force him to.)
Anyway, after a half-hour wait Mike ended up at the GH table. His 7 yr. old daughter loves the show, and I don't have the heart to tell her or my brother about Collargate and other suspicious events. The first thing that impressed my brother was the fact that both guys were very "normal". In fact, he stated that they were just like regular people you would meet at your local bar having a few beers. Mike has collected many autographs over the years and these were the first two that didn't distance themselves from their fans.
When approached, they were both interested in the fan's name, their occupation, etc. When Mike mentioned he was a Lieutenant in the Sheriff's Office of his local county, Tango actually stood up, reached over and shook his hand. Part of this was due, IMO, to the fact that Tango's father is a retired police Captain (?) and he has a certain respect for people in law enforcement. I had to tell Mike about that fact as he didn't know. But he was impressed by Tango's response.
When Steve asked to whom he should make out the autograph to, my brother gave his eldest daughter's name and Steve replied with a "wow, that's a beautiful name!" Again, the personal touch and attempt to try and really connect with the fans.
Another unusual thing was that "Stango" would sign anything people brought up to them. This may sound strange but we have had too many experiences where unless you actually bought something off the autograph table, many celebrities would refuse to sign whatever was presented to them. And my experience with movie actors, TV stars (however long their show has been off the air) has been one of meeting someone who is stuck up and couldn't care less about their fans. Mike said meeting these two was like running into old high school buddies.
The clowning and seeming friendship between Tango and Steve appears to be genuine, as they carried on in the same manner while signing autographs. Steve kept punching Tango, who would then throw stuff at Steve. When a teenage girl brought a TAPS shirt up for them to sign, Steve was playfully trying to get Tango to make a mistake by trying to prevent him to write.
Mike asked them how they manage to do all the stuff like filming, signing events, conferences etc., and both agreed it was very, very hard and tiring, but definitely worth it as it took them away from living humdrum lives. Fair enough.
So my brother's impression was first and foremost one of surprise at their average guy personae. After meeting celebrities that signed things like automatons to those who were outwardly hostile and just plain unfriendly, he was pleasantly caught unawares by their demeanour.
Although I'm not a fan of either guy, if I had gotten the chance to meet with them, it would have been to good to pass up. Also, I would not put them on the spot by asking some obvious questions that many of us here have come up with about the show. Like my brother, it would have been interesting to gauge what they were like in person and their interactions with each other, something which has become a staple on GH.
BTW, Brian H. did what I expected him to do–he canceled. This is the second time he pulled out of Monster Mania. The standard reason that was given was that he was no longer a member of GH or TAPS and left due to now having family committments. Of course, there are those of us who feel this is just a standard cover story. I must say I was hoping Brian would have come through this time, if only to counter accusations of the cowardness he has been accused of, as well as his supposed tendencies to be late or not show up at all. Oh well.
P.S. As far as pricing, Steve and Tango were among the lowest we have encountered–$30 for both, which of course is $15 apiece. Much less than the standard going rate.

Thanks for the post. I'm sorry to hear you didn't make it (I didn't either) but glad your brother went and could give you (and us) his perspective. I've never been a big fan of either one as well but I always saw Tango as the "normal" one and was never really sure about Steve. Good to know that, by their behavior, they seem to be grateful for their success. Too many times that goes in the other direction. I've seen two types of behavior at M&Gs plus the ones I do every month for a rescue group. Admittedly, these are tiring events (even just once a month), but there are those that are there because "they have to be" and are, at best, nice to your face but totally disappoint you by their plastered smile and coldness and then those that are genuinely happy to be there and meet you. It all comes down to how you deal with life's successes and failures which creates your attitude in how you deal with people. Obviously Steve and Tango actually do enjoy each other's company and appreciate the fans that stand in line for autographs or for some interaction with them. That's what it's all about. Not sure what kind of attitude you'd get from Jason at a M&G. My feeling is he would think's he's too good for it. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the post, Oubliette. Some good stuff.
Actually, I liked both Steve, when I first started watching; and Tango, when he first joined the team. I do not like what they have become. I'm glad they are as your brother described. (However, I wish he had asked them why they call each other by name EVERY time they speak during the analysis………jk)
I wish we had a Monster Mania event around here; they sound like a lot of fun.

I've never gone to anything like Monster Mania or a Star Trek convention or anything like those. What is the standard going rate? What would be the top end rate?
Also, thanks for the info on "Stango." It's funny, but as I think back to all the threads and posts here, Tango's name never really comes up when concerning "questionable" events. He seems like a good guy who is honestly attempting to find evidence. He strives in being a good team member, which really, speaks volumes for his character. In fact, away from the show and the spotlight, I would think that they are all pretty decent and likable people. Personally, I tend to forget that sometimes when posting….but man, there are times when their investigatory methods drive me up a wall…

This past summer my daughter was tending bar at a Newport, RI club and Steve came in. She recognized him as a TAPs member as did a few others in the bar. She said he fit in very comfortably with the crowd which was around his age and he seemed normal, her word just like Oubliette's brothers. He was telling some stories but was not hogging the conversations nor acting like a "star". Unfortunately she did not remember any of the stories as she was working and only hearing bits and pieces.

I have seen autographs running from $25 per celebrity onwards to $50. Never as low as $15.
You know, if this were Jason and Grant, I wouldn't even have been interested. But the peripheral players in that drama don't really bother me. And of course, Tango is a Jersey Guy who made it to the big time, which holds some interest for me.
Steve bothers me more due to his phobias, which seem ridiculous in view of the fact that a lot of supposed haunted places are full of creey crawlies, cobwebs etc. I can respect his fear of flying (it sort of scares me too) but hey-if I had a chance to go to the British Isles, just knock me out and wake me when we get there.
I can separate Steve and Tango as individuals separate from GH, but with Jason and Grant, I cannot. They are producers, they call the shots, find most of the "evidence" and are the ones that we question more than anyone else. In truth, meeting them across an autograph table would prove difficult for me. It's just how I feel.

It's a small world, and I'm sure I'll run into a TAPS member someday in person. If I heard they were coming to a local convention, I'd show up and get in the autograph line– with my Skeptical Viewer T-shirt on. I'd say that I was part of a web site that was devoted to watching their show and leave them a business card.
I think Revenant makes a great point. I've heard from several sources that most or all TAPS members are very friendly in person. This is not a battle against any particular person for me.
Conventions have different rates. I'm involved with running BayCon in the San Francisco Bay Area; that's about $60 right now. (You won't find TAPS members there– at least not as guests.) DragonCon (a much larger convention) is $80 currently, $100 at the door. For autographs, Oubliette's right– $30 is at the low end, although I think I paid $20 for an autograph of Jorge Garcia from Lost. I've heard that Mark Hamill is charging $100 an autograph.
It would be seriously tempting to try to get them to sign a Skeptical Viewer T-shirt, though. :)

Wait, wait, wait……….there's Skeptical Viewer T-shirts?!?
And all this time I've been coming to the website with my faded T-shirt that I crudely wrote on with a marker saying "I believe I'm skeptical about believing that I'm a skeptic."

I am PROUD to wear my Skeptical Viewer T-shirt! (and no, I don't get a cut for promoting it) You won't believe the people who don't know what a skeptic is. They're always getting the word mixed up with "non-believer", which describes someone who refuses to change his/her opinion regardless of the evidence.
Good thought about wearing them to places like this. Since Monster-Mania does take email requests for guests, think I'll put one in early. The best thing is to put in "anyone from Ghost Hunters", that way leaving the door open to getting at least one person who is able to attend. Hey, maybe they can set up a Q & A with the Dynamic Duo, who knows? Monster Mania has grown so much in the last few years there would certainly be enough of an audience.
Of course, many others come to mind: I'd love to meet Josh Gates, but to my knowledge he has never appeared at any convention like this. :(
Again, I truly wonder what happened to Brian. My hubby thinks that he might have thought twice about it, knowing that Steve might be listening to anything he (Brian) may say and report back to the Big Jay. As with anything having to do with the show, don't think we'll ever know why he really canceled.
P.S. They have expanded to having a Monster Mania in Connecticut this year, so anyone close to or in that state might want to check it out.

The NJ site is not updated yet but the next show will be in August. Guest requests are being taken.

No way!! Alice 'freakin' Cooper!?! My son would have walked to NJ. He's into everything on that site, but Alice 'freakin' Cooper?!?! I'd have walked with him.
btw, Oubliette, is Cherry Hill anywhere near Harrison? I guess I should ask if any of these shows are near Harrison. I'm pretty confident they aren't coming anywhere near the Tennessee-Mississippi-Arkansas area, so I'd like to work in a trip to catch the convention AND the Red Bulls play in their new stadium.

No, Cherry Hill is right near Philadelphia. But you may be interested in Chiller Theatre:
http://www.chillertheatre.com/main.htm
Just checked out the page myself and wish I could go! But ever since they moved from the Meadowlands up to Parsippany it's just too long a haul unless I could stay overnight nearby.
Also, just noticed that they are going to have Mike Melillo and his beautiful Jersey Devil sculpture that was featured in MonsterQuest! Also the two Marks from Weird New Jersey magazine. Whaaa…….
Peter Criss from Kiss: isn't he the one who says he was abducted by space aliens?
If anyone is considering going, please note that they will not be selling any Saturday tickets at the door due to the huge crowd that show up on its busiest day. Nobody wants to wait in line 2 hours for a ticket.
Another great event I'm going to miss…this is getting very depressing. My brother is going, though. Maybe he'll have another great story to tell, who knows?

Hmmm…you may be thinking of "Ace" Frehley, lead guitarist, who became "Space Ace;" an alien visitor from the planet Jendell (sp?). Why do I remember that? No idea…

Yes, you are right. It was Ace. He really thinks he had contact with aliens. The other Kiss members just seem to indulge him. Well, who knows? Maybe he was.

Having met and talked to Ace while doing security for the band.
Yeah, I can believe that.
On a side note, one night Ace and Peter went the front of the house where they were to perform that night and didn't have their make-up on and nobody recognized them.
We were laughing our butts off the whole time.

It was mentioned that at the GH table that Tango stood and responded respectfully after being told that "Mike" was a police lieutenant. It's good to see that Tango was that considerate and respectful! What strikes me as odd, however, was that it's common knowledge that Steve used to be a police officer himself. If this was the case then it seems out of place that Steve didn't also respond to the statement.

Good point. Though I'll have to ask my brother if Steve did react but he just didn't mention it. Tango's reaction caught my brother by surprise but he didn't know about Tango's father's occupation. Steve did say that my niece's name Natalia was very beautiful. It seems both he and Tango were honestly trying to connect with fans, which is more than I can say for my past experiences with celebrities. If you got a smile and a "how are you doing" out of them, it was a miracle.
The funny thing is that, just as my brother mentioned, those two really do seem to be great friends and love joking around with each other. This has been confirmed by a link provided here in another thread about a guy who was allowed to go along on a shoot with the cast and crew of GH. So at least their friendship is not an act just for the cameras.

Sad isn't it that the only thing genuine on this show is the friendship between Steve and Tango? Still I am glad for them.
