I don't have a problem with that at all, it's certainly a possibility. My point was that it's not the only possibility and, considering the seriousness of the allegations, better evidence would be needed before declaring it the most probable explanation.

Oh, no, like I said, it was supposition.
But I have to say that it is, so far, the only scenario that posits a logical answer to what possible reason MBD would have to not make sure that a diclaimer of some type was on camera before the investigation.
But why do you think it's a 'serious' allegation? If MBD WAS trying to pull a publicity stunt it would be annoying, probably, to Jay and Grant, but a nice trick to the audience.
Hell, in that scenario, Pilgrim could have been in on it. If it was put forward with a best case description.
As I said, Spencers reaction lends itself to the idea–he knew what to say and do, was ready for his 'Wow, our effects fooled TAPS line'(probably something more diplomatic than that) and thought that the whole thing would work out as planned. When it fell through, you can see him falter–but prior to that he's kinda cocky(the atittude that gets him called 'asshole'). He acts derailed.
It would also explain the blunt 'TAPS was not told' posts AND Jason's retraction. AND Auerbachs' reaction.

^^ I agree with most of what you posted, Jack (as far as a big "If"), however I'm not sure how it explains Jay's retraction of his blog or Auerbach's response. Please explain.

If the nature of the stunt came out after that Pilgrim/GH knew, then Jason's post would be incorrect–but saying that TAPS wasn't told would be the precise truth.
Auerbach's reaction can easily be explained as being pissed that not only didn't it work as planned but that TAPS/GH/Pilgrim–who he thought were in on it–used the failure of the stunt to bash the MBD.

First time posting here, and I'll be sure to register soon.
I'm extremely late to the party, I'm sure, but I had just recently saw this episode and looked over the episode synopsis/comments and forum posts concerning it. I apologize if I repeat someone's sentiments needlessly.
I've seen some people question why the MBD Chef would not alert T.A.P.S to the devices/gadgets used in simulating a haunting during their tour. I think the answer is very simple. It is a commercial business that has a long standing interest in maintaining it's reputation as 'haunted'.
If MBD had informed Pilgrim of the devices/gadgets before hand (which certainly seems likely) then the Chef was likely informed by his own management not to repeat such things on camera, as it would in turn have a commercial impact. Any interested or allured viewers who would like to visit the location would find themselves quickly disillusioned at the prospect of the Haunted House experience they had created.
I realize these are assumptions, but it seems to me that it's a quite likely theory of why Pilgrim would be informed before hand, but the Chef would not be on video stating such things.
It would simply be bad for business. And in an odd way, I feel Pilgrim may have ensured it was, one way or another by demonize the 'charlatans' trying to pull one over our unsuspecting…uh…heroes?

I'm more or less with Red on this one. This was the head chef they were talking to, not the owner, and he may have been constrained about what he was allowed to say. I'm not sure that it's to MBD's credit, but they're a restaurant, not a paranormal investigation team.
So the real question is, is the chef any good at cooking? That's one I might be able to answer. Sometime this year, I'll have dinner there and post a restaurant review.

Jason said on the latest episode of "Beyond Reality Radio" that in the final cut Jason appeared to be way more polite than he actually was to the chef and that when asked why he didn't say anything about the gags that "the owner told him not to."

I lived in Half Moon Bay, CA from 1993 - 1995. I had breakfast brunch at the Moss Beach Distillery while out there and found it entirely unremarkable. My employers told me about the haunting, which they indicated involved female patrons getting locked in bathroom stalls by a jealous entity. Nothing out of the ordinary occurred on our visit. (Even the brunch was nothing special.)
The Unsolved Mysteries episode aired for the first time while I lived out there. There were no gimmicks at that point. No swaying chandeliers or fun house laughter in the bathroom or ghost mask in the mirror. I really question the story as a whole. The Unsolved Mysteries segment is available in its entirety on YouTube and you'll note they offer three different versions of this woman's death. Considering this crime occurred only 70 years ago (85 by now), you'd think there would be some definitive record of it.
I found the funhouse effects shown on GH utterly pathetic. That place is clearly desperate for customers.
