I'm in San Diego, amusing myself with skeptical fun while my wife attends a local conference. I've already toured the Whaley House (more on that later), and tomorrow will be visiting the Maritime Museum of San Diego, site of Ghost Hunters episode 426, "Spirits on the Water". The Maritime Museum includes the vessels Star of India and Berkeley.  Anything I should particularly poke into?

Well, back in the 1960s, The Whaley House was designated as an official Haunted House by the United States Commerce Department.  Not sure if any TV paranormal groups have gotten a hold of it, but…if you're looking for spooky stories and a place to test for infra-sound…well…the US government thinks this is as good of a place as any.

Hmmm…if you really want to have some fun, do what the psychics do: read up on the place, do a bit of research, then go to the place, close your eyes and "see" spirits with the correct names.  "Feel" murders by describing how they occurred.  Place your hands on the wall and tell the stories of the past, present, and future (by this point…you'd be able to make up anything…).  Good fun… Laughing

There was some debate here as to what that certification/designation really meant a while back:

@Nosfer – Thanks for the link to the thread.  For some reason, I've never seen it.  Not sure how I missed that.  Maybe that was when I was away from SV for a while when my computer blew up…

@hyacinth – Wow…Most Haunted…I would have never have looked at that.  Thanks for digging that up. Smile

I came up with it by watching a few "spooky locations" type of shows on the Travel Channel.  They run them at this time of year.  I only remembered the Whaley house because of the government connection.

Probably that "Most Terrifying Places" series? They've been running those a bit lately, a 4-minute blurb on each place. Funny when they go to places we've seen "full" investigations of and get a whole 'nother take on the place by the way this program talks about them!

Beyond just providing "background noise" while I'm doing whatever around the house, yes…it's quite interesting to hear the paranormal claims of places that I've already seen on one of the other shows.  Oddly enough, they seem to fall into a predictable pattern.  They push the "main ghost story" which is almost always the same for the other TV shows.  But when they break off into the smaller ones…that's where things get interesting.  Those smaller stories usually never match up.

I have this sneaking suspicion that if there are 8 claims and a TV show gets an EVP in a room, they will edit the claims at the beginning of the show to match what they found.  In this manner, J&G, for example, can "match up the claims to what the owner said" which is something that they love to do.  Of course, if you throw out the other 7 claims…it makes it much easier to match up the single claim that you found "evidence" for…
