It's sort of scary to think of Steve with a loaded gun, while being afraid of snakes, shadows, spiders, airplanes, etc. Perhaps he was told to keep his gun unloaded, and they only gave him one bullet at a time.

Shouldn't he have been running down the street in NY after Brian with the case yelling "Citizen's Arrest! Citizen's Arrest!"? I loved that episode and it's one of many of my favorite quotes from that show.

Alicat, you are not alone in your suspicions that Brian took that case. It was his build, movement, clothes and hat like he always wore–there was just too much a likeness. I would bet 100% on this, that's how sure I was and still am. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, etc. And what thief would gently lay down the object instead of quickly tossing it? Don't remember if Steve "tripped" or anything like that; have to try and dig it up to watch again. Also love the way nobody else even tried to help.
This was nothing but a bit of drama in this docu-drama. As I recall, Jay and Grant didn't seem all that surprised. The whole thing has "fake" written all over it. My brother is a Lieutenant and also spent years on a SWAT Team, and I can tell you he would have continued to pursue the suspect even after he dropped the case and bolted around the corner. Perhaps it's not surprising Steve is no longer with law enforcement. "I'm not going to go into that house, it's full of spider webs!" I can tell you he wouldn't last long as a police officer in NJ.

Oubliette, Thanks. I forgot to make the comment about the way the case was put down. If anyone was stealing something like that they would have either thrown it at the person to slow them down or just tossed it. Neither happened. I had wanted to say it reminded me of the camera "fall and bounce" at Essex.
Also, they had crew all around them yet no one saw this person? When filming, especially in NYC, most companies have either police or some private security (although I cannnot be sure they did) but, at the very least, they have individuals that are responsible for securing the area because they don't want anyone to walk through a scene, injure themselves or damage equipment by falling over or on top of their set up, distract or congregate and socialize with the cast and crew. Are TAPS/GH that incompetent? Even photo shoots usually block off an area because there is so much equipment and crew and people are stopped and asked to go around. It's not like the news reports where people wander around in shots during filming. They are doing quick, on the spot reporting.
I calculate that Steve had to be in his 20s or early 30s and in relatively good shape. At that age and with his police training, Steve definitely should have been able to catch "Brian".
I also agree about your comment on Jason and Grant. Bad acting. They "reacted", if I remember correctly, with a low key geeze or really. If someone told me someone tried to steal expensive equipment, I would have a shocked look on my face and have been a little more animated and want to know how and why it happened. I would have been (politely) ticked off! They just reacted nonplussed with rather deadpan expressions. Definitely not what you would expect.

They had it on film…attempted theft of equipment like that warrants turning the film over to the police. This was just more "let's add excitement for the viewers" nonsense.

Great point Nosfer. Gee, wonder why they never pursued it? Hmmm…….. Maybe someone should ask them that on Twitter! I'd love to hear that excuse.
