This wonderful YouTube video from James Randi (uploaded 2/13) addresses the rash of paranormal shows and the misuse of scientific equipment by "paranormal" groups.  He actually mentions GH around the 6:00 mark, but I recommend watching the entire video.  It is informative and serves to remind us of how people were fooled in the past and how easily they can still be fooled. Randi does not deny that things like ESP etc. exist, but stresses how flimsy and unscientific most of the research has been (and still is).

Enjoy!

Looks like the video is no longer available. Kind of odd, actually, since Randi put it up himself…

I think you'll find, though, that Randi doesn't believe that ESP or paranormal phenomena exist.

I'm a Randi fan and a member of the JREF. (I joined partially because I wanted to be able to call myself a "card-carrying skeptic" if the need arose.) Randi is one of the founding figures of the skeptical movement, and without him I don't know where it would be. He's one of the few living people to whom I've written a fan letter, and the only one that responded within the day!

I don't completely go along with all of what he does. He favors a put-up-or-shut-up, adversarial approach to the paranormal. He'll sometimes refer to believers in the paranormal as "woo-woos". In return, he's been demonized by his opponents.

I've heard him talk about GH and company in the past, and I suspect that he hasn't watched the show very closely. I don't know if he's aware of the Grant List or the Collar Pull. (Hmm… somebody should tell him!) Most of the time, he seems to think that the Ghost Hunters are self-deluded and hapless. (Like GHI. See, now I'm doing it!)

Wasn't he at some point in time in the past suppose to be 'AMAZING'.

With all the winks, shrugs and eye rolls I thought he might have a side job as a smiley model.

He makes money by being on one side of the spectrum while others make theirs on the other side.

Meanwhile, I stand in the middle broke and disillusioned.

Did like the little globe thingy on the shelf though.

Randi often comes on very strong, but you must remember he started his career as a performer or, as he had on the sign he hung out, charlatan.    He didn't want to give anyone the impression that what he was doing was anything but illusions.  I believe he never lost his "showmanship".  His goal has always been to get and keep the public's attention in order to get his message across.  He has stood up to some of the worst frauds and exposed them big time.  I'm thinking in particular of Peter Popoff, the evangelist who used the communication device to pretend God was giving him information.  Unfortunately, he's back in action.  It's hard to keep a good fraud down!

I was hoping he was going to address the collar pull too; or anything in detail about GH.  But he did make no bones about who he was referring to in particular, mentioning the show and flashing a pic of them.   In fact, I would like to see any illusionist take that collar trick on.  A number of non-magicians have done a credible job of re-creating it, but no big names have come out with any public comments.  There may be reasons why he kept the subject on the equipment that GH and others like them use, but have no idea how to set, operate and interpret the information these meters and cameras provide.

Did you catch the guy with the device on his head with one eye covered?  That's really a keeper.

Blinddog is right in that YouTube has been having its problems; ditto for MySpace.

As Randi points out, these shows are flourishing.   A strong sense of wanting to believe taints so many otherwise rational people into duping even themselves within the confines of a university research lab.

Regardless of what you might think of the man, he has done the most to promote critical analysis in public of sometimes outrageous claims.  And he was doing it way back when at a time skeptical voices were rarely heard or seen.  He is up in age now and has suffered a heart attack.  I hope he will be around for many years to come, as the scam business is once again thriving as it did in the past.  He has proved an inspiration for so many people, and has really opened some eyes.

Randi did a great TV special where he debunked many paranormal claims. The show still airs once in a while — anyone who hasn't seen it should. My favorite part was when he asked two famous Russian psychics, who claimed to be able to tell everything about a person by simply looking at a photo of them, to try it on a photo he provided of a smiling young American man. They kept prodding him for information, which he of course refused to give. Their final analysis was, as I remember, that the pictured man liked to play tennis, was married, etc. etc. — living the All-American dream life. The photo was of serial killer Ted Bundy.

LOL!  Didn't see that one!  You think it might be on YouTube?  Going to have to check and see.  You'd think that Bundy was so famous even the Russians would know what he looked like.  Didn't Randi also expose a Russian woman who was doing some kind of trick or claimed clairvoyant powers?  She was supposed to have fooled some of the best known researchers but it didn't take him long to figure out her schtick.

That might be the same one – these women were the toast of Russia and were using obvious "reading' techniques (gathering information from the person presenting the picture). Randi must have done his research and knew Bundy was not known in Russia. Now that I think about it, I believe the show was an epsiode of the PBS program Nova.

UPDATE: It was a Nova show called Secrets of the Psychics. Here's a link with clips: http://www.csicop.org/webmaster/randi/

In one respect Grant from GH reminds me of Randi's long time foe Uri Geller.

It's one thing to be an illusionist and admit to such, but the ones out there that claim to be doing it for real need to be exposed for the fraudsters that they are. In that respect James Randi has provided an invaluable community service.

I'm not sure I'm as hard core a skeptic on all things as he is, but considering his line of work and the people he has come across in life I'm not surprised he is the way he is.

He was called "The Amazing Randi" and when I was a kid I still remember a trick he did on live TV. The show was called Wonderama. It appeared on the old Ch. 5 out of New York. It was a kid's show. It was on all Sunday afternoon. It was fill with mostly kids stuff. but I remember a puppet version of the complete "HMS Pinafore".  Well anyway one day this guy called "The Amazing Randi" was on and he had himself put into a cake off ice right outside the studio. People would pass him by all day and he would still be in that ice . At the end of the show the top block was taken off and instead of a human popsicle Randi just jumped out like nothing happened. To a Six year old kid that was pretty amazing !
