It seems that over the last few seasons Jason and Grant have been capturing a lot of EVPs. I would like to know if it is possible that some of these locations are acting as a crude cell phone tower.  One example would be some of the lighthouses they have investigated. Also many of the old mansions date back far enough that they probably still have lighting rod systems still installed. Copper gutters and downspouts etc. Could any of these capture cell phone signals or other wireless devices out of the air.

I am also wondering about the digital recorders and how data is stored. I would think that these devices go through a series of testing before being packaged for sale. How do they know that the testing data has been wiped clean. Could some residue be left behind.

I would love for someone with more knowledge on this to share their thoughts

Hi bigbobft welcome to the forum.

Lighthouses, buildings with metal and that sort of thing do reflect radio waves like cell phone signals etc. Generally speaking however, they would not cause a greater incidence of RFI (radio frequency interference) induced EVP.

There was one brand and model of digital audio recorder that was popular among ghost hunters that DID pick up radio frequency transmissions. I forget the model now. It's mentioned elsewhere on this forum somewhere…

Apart from that one particular model, most DAR's now days are pretty well shielded. My little Sony USB stick recorder can be placed right near the case of one of my high power transmitters and not pick it up. One way to test their shielding is to place them near some active electrical wiring. If they record a buzz they are not well shielded and may be more vulnerable to RFI.

@Learjet: The popular "EVP" recorder is the Panasonic RR-DR60. But I think it's not the only old recorder used. Any old recorder that is not properly shielded against radio signals will do…

As for the GH and GHI, I think they do not use outdated, dysfunctional equipment. So far, I've seen them use up-to-date models only. You can see outdated recorders on Ghost Adventures and Haunted Collector (http://www.skepticalviewer.com…..-3/#p15610), though.

Thanks Verklagekasper. I knew it was somewhere on here.

These days GH generally use the better quality Zoom recorders.

Yes, the Zoom recorders are good. You got to give them (the GH crew) that.

Btw old recorders may not only suffer from improper shielding but also from poor microphone quality and violent data compression. Those are flaws that are even more likely to create "EVP" than radio signals.

However, IMHO, most "Class A" EVP are created by the crew members themselves. Do you know "Paranormal Challenge"? It's a show hosted by GA's Zak Bagans, quite similar to "Ghost Hunters Academy". On two or three occasions, false EVP were debunked in that show. Each time the crews were totally sure that the recorded sound didn't come from a crew member. One time they even claimed that the EVP voice was completely different from the crew member's voice. Yet they were proven wrong by video evidence.

There are tons of EVP around in the internet whose creators claim to be 99% sure that the sound did not come from a crew member. Some act like they could remember every word and subconscious utterance spoken during a several-hour-lasting investigation. But nobody is capable of that unless he's a Rainman-like genius.

Apart from dialog and subconscious utterances, I think that crew members account for yet another kind of EVP which has been overlooked so far: Digesting sounds! I believe that quite a lot, if not most of all recorded "moans" and "growls" are not so much messages of the dead but bowel movements of the living. A crew member creating such a kind of "Class A EVP" may be even aware of that, yet too embarrassed to admit.
