I happen to like GHI for reasons which I don't have time to go into right now.

I've seen a ton of criticism about Shannon Sylvia all over the Internet, and as can be seen, she apparently has been replaced by Dustin.

I thought some of the jibes were a bit motivated by jealousy, with people claiming she is nothing but a media hog. In watching the reruns, I have to admit she looks either bored, totally uninterested or so terrified she was virtually useless.

Well, after a bit of research, I found a news item where she created a bit of ruckus over a car dealer whom she thought had not been honest with her. She even created a website to "warn" people about the place, and litigation by both parties soon followed.

After reading this article, I have to question who had chosen her to be on GHI? Did they not at least do a cursory background check? Esp. since she also appeared as a client on PS–very strange indeed. I remember there was a notice somewhere that a casting agency was looking for a member to join a ghost hunting team, which later turned out to be GHI. Heck, I would have given my eyeteeth to be on there, and not because it's a TV show. To go to the places they've been to on someone else's dime and investigate these ancient edifices would be a dream of a lifetime for me. But I digress….here is the odd story of Shannon and the car dealer. Any thoughts? Could growing knowledge of this gotten her off of GHI?

As I understand it, the timeline is as follows:

Shannon had experiences in her apartment that led to New England Paranormal doing several investigations there. Through this initial interaction she became even more interested in the paranormal and became an active member of New England Paranormal, which then either merged with TAPS or had some sort of brotherly relationship with them.

Shannon was (I think) featured in a couple of season 1 or 2 Ghost Hunters episodes alongside Jason & Grant, and through her interaction with them became one of the investigators recommended for the GHI sister show during the planning stages. In the meantime, Penn State's PRS was looking for places to investigate for their new show, Paranormal State, and someone recommended Shannon's apartment. I'm not clear on whether their investigation took place before or after Shannon went to Europe to investigate with GHI for the first time, but it almost certainly took place before any GHI episodes had aired.

Admittedly, some of this is me filling in the blanks with whatever seems to make the most sense, but I think that's probably a reasonably accurate picture of what Shannon's story is or was. As for her leaving GHI, there are lots of things we could speculate about: Maybe the producers saw the lawsuit or other extracurricular activities and decided she might hurt the show down the line. Maybe going on Paranormal State violated her contract. Maybe they decided her presence didn't really add anything to the show.

If you'll recall, she had also gotten into a pretty emotional argument with Donna over the way Donna was doing EVPs. Frankly, I thought Shannon was dead-on in her point but the end result was that Robb did a crappy job of settling the dispute and it seemed that tension didn't go away; I don't think Donna & Shannon were paired off together after that and there may have even been general tension within the group over this issue behind the scenes, when traveling etc. When it comes down to it, Donna has the seniority and the better-defined role within the team so if one of them had to go it wasn't going to be Donna.

It could have been a combination of any number of these things or even something we don't know about. I don't think it really matters. In a nutshell, I thought Shannon might have looked (and been) incredibly scared pretty much all the time but I don't recall seeing her completely lose her nerve and run (unlike Barry). I thought she worked very hard to contribute to the team and in the argument with Donna I thought she was absolutely right and if there was any tension after that I place the blame squarely on Robb's leadership.

All of that being said, having not watching GHI for six some-odd months and then watching the Larnach Castle investigation — and if you read my review you may notice this — I didn't even notice she was gone. I had forgotten she even existed until gem commented about her being off the show. When I noticed that Brian was still on the team I genuinely thought, "Oh, I guess they just added a member without removing anyone."

I feel kind of bad about that, but to me that's basically proof that as much as I think Shannon tried hard and as much as I don't think she did nearly as many "stupid" things as some of her teammates, she just didn't really add very much to the show. Call it "stage presence", I dunno but to me I think Shannon deserves a lot more respect than say, Brian, but there is no denying that Brian gets fans emotionally involved with the show (love him or hate him) while Shannon did not.

So, while taking Shannon off the show is undoubtedly (in my mind) the right move for the producers, whatever the reason, I hope she find success elsewhere because I do genuinely think she's worthy of more respect than many fans realize.

Logisti, I don't think Shannon was ever on GH. Could you be mixing her up with Lisa D. (can't remember her last name)? She looked similar to Shannon.

I recall that there was a casting call by an agency in L.A. to find a member for a yet unnamed paranormal investigation team, which turned out to be GHI. This of course had nothing to do with the contest or whatever the heck it was that led to Mark being chosen for a few appearances.

It is confusing about Shannon and PS. The big problem I have is her terror of the paranormal. I experienced a lot of scary things as a child yet it has made me want to dive into the field, frightened or not. Shannon would often freeze like a deer in headlights. There's no shame in being frightened; we are only human. But the abject terror she showed was a bit much for an investigator. To me, it's the same with GH and Steve. His fear of spiders, insects, cobwebs etc. is just out of place for someone who will be going into a lot of old buildings filled with this kind of stuff. Somewhat like a surgeon who can't stand the sight of blood!

Watching the reruns, her expression is one of almost indifference. Of course, we will never know what went on behind the scenes. I'm sure Donna and Shannon roomed together during the filming and it must have gotten uncomfortable after that incident re: EVPs.

I think Rob's talking to Shannon looked like something scripted just to try and ease the damage. Of course, the producers could have chosen to edit out the argument, but we all know that drama always spices up a show.

It looked to me like a clash of personalities between the two women. What is it with we females?? Thought we were going to see a cat fight!

You are right in that one hardly notices she is gone. She has opened her own spa, probably with money made from the show. Another fact I just found out is that she resigned in November 2007 from that New England Paranormal group she was associated with. I may be wrong but it looks like she is getting out of the field entirely. But this affair with car dealer might have played a part in removing her from the show. Of course we will never know. SciFi just goes on as though nothing happened and probably hope that nobody will notice or care after a while. There had been rumors that a member of GHI had gotten fired, and everyone was assuming it was Brian. Apparently, they were wrong.

If 50 million people believe a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.

It's entirely possible that I'm misremembering. What I'm fairly sure of is that she got involved with New England Paranormal after they investigated her apartment and that she got involved with TAPS (and GHI) through New England Paranormal.

There was obviously a lot of hullbaloo about her appearance on PS — I even saw an article that headlined something along the lines of: GHOST HUNTERS MEMBER GOES TO PARANORMAL STATE TEAM FOR HELP but considering her story (re: the "paranormal" community) seems to begin with her apartment being haunted I suspect this was entirely on-the-level and probably resulted from PRS asking around looking for a "gig" rather than Shannon seeking them out — although again, on this I could be wrong.

Ultimately, I think she got a bit of an undeserved bad rap. As you pointed out, she would seem frozen with fear on occasion and it was unbecoming of a paranormal investigator. I would argue it's even less becoming when Barry yelled, "Run!" and then ran like he was being chased by the Hound of the Baskervilles, but Barry's fear entertained while Shannon's did not.

The irony here is that if she had given in to her fear and acted completely unprofessionally like the stereotypical "scared little girl" and spent her air-time screaming, crying and running away from shadows it would have engaged the audience more. I'm rather glad she didn't, because that might have irritated me more than Brian, but from the producer's standpoint (and very likely a ratings standpoint) she would have lent more to the show.

I know this particular blog was yrs ago now..but in reading through things, I happened across this. I have to say in Shannon's defense, she is a marvelously intellegent person. She does still conduct lectures and such in the paranormal field at conferences and so on. She attended a conference my paranormal group put on and she and her husband were absolutely wonderful people. Shannon has a no nonsense outlook on things and is very to the point and realistic. I don't think people understand all of that about her and assume she is all for the fame. In fact, she has her own businesses PREVIOUS to ever being on television, and continues those after the fact as well as lecturing across the country. As far as the PS show..that was filmed and aired PREVIOUS to her GHI stint. That information comes from her directly. She hadn't even become involved with them yet, however she was in the N.E.A.R. group which is became a TAPS family group. So, to clear all that up, no she didn't betray any group she was with although thanks to the 'cleaver' timing of the production airing it may look like it. She is the real deal, 150%.Smile

Hello!

This article was brought to my attention today by a friend who sent me an email with this link, I read this article and have to say so much of it is untrue and hearsay. The lawsuit by Village Saab was not brought on by me, it was brought on by the dealership because they hosed me financially on a contract deal and my attorney suggested I use my Freedom of Speech and make a website about it. They attempted to sue me but failed and I won the case in Surpreme court, hence, the website is still up. This was all in 2004.  I was on GHI in 2008 and yes, NBC puts you through a 1.5 hour background check meeting and this was all discussed. Producers and NBC was also notified about Paranormal State, which if you remember Keith and Sandra Johnson from Ghost Hunters appeared as well on several episodes with no conflict of interest. People have DUI's, arrests and other more serious issues on their records and they are still signed by television shows. A car dealership lawsuit had no impact on either appearances on the severa shows I participated on.

We were all tired/exhausted/underpaid and unhappy at times overseas but you have to realize Hollywood and Pilgrim Films editing wanted each and every one of us to be a 'character'. If they aired a shot of me with my eyes open it was because Brian and I witnessed the edges of a door illuminating on the top of a castle in Slovakia and I simply thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I was not scared, its natural to react. I never ran out of a building, left my place or refused to return into a building like you would see other cast members do. There was a creative scene where Im sitting in Scotland with short sleeves freezing on a bench, running my arms to warm up yet everyone thought I was scared. I needed a sweater! lol. I hate to see that i'm being blamed for being endlessly full of fear. This was not the case at all, watch all episodes I was on again please. Another scene filmed in England where Rob is talking to me was aired as part of a Romania episode. See the shirt i'm wearing in the Black Horse Tavern episode? Same hair? Yes, they used that scene where I was near giving my notice to leave GHI to make it look like it was about Donna hence why none of it made sense why Robb was talking to me when Donna wasnt involved or even named.

I had a wonderful relationship with Donna throughout the entire season of GHI. There was no fighting, and with some prodding from producers, there were scenes with tension, yes, but we made fun of those scenes on Youtube where Donna and I made fun of this episode just last year (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..6inBsmykR8). You have to understand that what you see on tv is not what may really be happening, I do wish more people were open minded about this.

I left Steve Gonsalves's team because he was not a good team leader and the one he designated as team leader was so upset I was chosen for GHI I had to face constant harassement from her. I joined another team immediately in my area (NECAPS) and have been a member ever since.

I opened a day spa April 15th, 2008 so I chose to leave the show. I needed to be home for the businesses and not on a plane randomly for very little money, I began construction in 2006 way before GHI was ever born. I have owned an advertising agency for 11 years, that is how I financed the spa, not television.

I have been part of television projects since GHI, such as History Channel and scouting for A&E shows. There is alot of involvement behind the scenes I do not talk about. I have also been successful with the laser grid which I introduced to the field in 2008, supplied to GH/GHI and I invented the iWay. I am a very active ghost hunter with private cases in Massachusetts and I do many charity fundraisers. How many GH/GHI members can you say have accomplished this?

Please stop with the hating and spreading of misinformation. Its sad I have to come here to explain the facts when they are very easy to find, by reaching me directly or researching online.

Thank you,

Shannon Sylvia

Just thought I pop in on this to say "hi".  I also have an active web presence and folks are always trying to join my twitter, facebook, etc., because they think that I am the Shannon Sylvia on Ghost Hunters.  Since we both live in Massachusetts, it's understandable.  Just wanted to take the opportunity to say "hi" to the Shannon Sylvia that everyone seems to be looking for.  :-)
