Well, if they spoke in normally, we'd have their voices AND the music drowning out the possibility of hearing anything.  We've been complaining about the music here ever since the site started, at least we haven't had to complain about their dialogue (well, not as much, anyway!)

Edited: It's probably mostly just for effect.  Just like the music, just like the going dark.  Imagine the two following possibilities:

1. Daytime investigation with no background music and normal conversation.
2. Nighttime investigation with spooky background music and whispered and hushed conversations.

Which is going to get the ratings for being more oooooooooey?
