Someone (The Doctor?) mentioned that the kit was already for sale after someone else (Revenant?) asked how long it would be before those backpack kits would be on sale.

Well I went and took a look at it (I'm not even giving a link to it unless someone really desperately wants to see it) Contains a K2, a non-contact IR thermometer, and a tri-colored 29LED flashlight. Sells for $225. I think the case is the most expensive item, it DOES look like you at least get a quality case. The flashlight might not be too bad, either.

The other stuff? Well, I won't even mention the K2 other than that in the specs it mentions 50/60hz operation. 50 is European and 60 is us powerline frequency, does this mean it only detects those frequencies? Learjet? I have forgone purchasing a K2 so I am a little curious as to what that "operation" means.

Non-contact IR thermometer. Why? There is not even a probe included it appears, so where this thing will be most useful is in detecting areas of poor insulation on your walls. It can ONLY measure surface temperature, it cannot detect some entity walking through the room. It will be useless in determining if the AIR around you is feeling colder.

Oh, and it is only a 6:1 spot ratio. This means that if you stand away from a wall a distance of 6 feet, you are measuring (and averaging) a 1-foot diameter area of the wall for your reading. If you stand 12 feet away, 2-foot diameter. Cutting edge of pin-point accuracy, no?

Where's me scales? I demand scales be included in the kit! lol.

The K-II – 5 to 6000 Hertz, peak sensitivity 30-1000 Hertz, then there's a sharp drop off after 6000 Hertz. It comes back to life at top of the HF band and just keeps on going from there. I don't know if all revisions are the same but mine seems to pick up just about any AC signal at the frequencies mentioned.

So when they say 50/60 Hertz, that's probably what it was originally intended for. But they forgot to filter the higher frequencies so it pics up radio/microwave as well.

If only we had no consciences, I'll bet that we could have at least as good a kit for half the price. Well, granted that nothing there is proven to actually register the existence of ghosts, a bag of rocks would do as well.

Here's my stab at a "better" kit:

  • A Learjet meter, AKA an antenna for your computer and associated software (with a disclaimer that although we have no idea if ghosts can be detected with EMF, running this kind of thing can be really interesting for other reasons)
  • A gram scale sealed in a transparent box
  • Duct tape
  • A journal book with an insert on how to take notes
  • Books by Joe Nickell, Ben Radford, etc.
  • A large sign that says "LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON"
  • A magic 8 ball
  • More duct tape. Can't detect ghosts but is always useful.

You know, I'm starting to feel better about this idea.

Don't forget the flashlight for the SFT, hehheh. Or maybe not. Undecided

Like a lot of people here, after a good fill of TV ghost shows that have field tested all sorts of junk equipment, and having (unintentionally) demonstrated how useless they are, I'm not sure I see much point in taking anything. I feel like I'm back to square one and don't know where to go from here.

Oh, and a portable chair and a warm blanket. In my one-and-only ghost hunt, I had the chair and not the blanket, and froze most of the evening, especially since you need to sit around a lot outside.

I know exactly how you feel. I have learned from these shows, but it's been more in what not to do. The positive stuff that I've learned has been in discussing the various things that we see with some of you folks on here. The debunking of what we've seen has been valuable for me. For me, the Fort Mifflin, Fort Delaware, and Belcourt Castle episodes, especially, taught me a tremendous amount, not in what GH did, but in trying to figure out what was REALLY going on.

I suspect there will be no breakthroughs into the paranormal from these shows. But if you can get past the facade, there is at least some information to be gleaned on instrumentation and techniques. The caveat is that you have to take it several steps further and use the equipment properly and definitely refine/tailor the techniques better. It's also funny that some of their better techniques or practices are ones that we had been suggesting for quite some time before GH/GL/xx actually employed them themselves!

I think a start might be for US to explain some of the advantages and disadvantages of the equipment we see them using. Show how it can be manipulated (ie the SFT or K2) Perhaps some of those "whitepapers" could be placed in an area of a bit more prominence on the site as a reference that we can point to rather than having to explain things each time we see it used. If SV will buy me a thermal camera, I will be glad to write a review on it :)

Stephen, not sure about your SV Ghost Huntin' Kit, yet…..but I'll give you twenty bucks for that bag of rocks.

Are they autographed?
