Seems that the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia had advertised an overnight "ghost hunt" with such paranormal stars as Robb Demarest, Kristyn Gartland, Chris Fleming and last but not least, Chip Coffey. It costs $240 a ticket to rub shoulders with these celebrities. This event was to include a Q & A session, group investigations and a "crossover reading" for some selected folks by Chip Coffey (not sure if this was included in the price. He usually charges $500 for a phone crossover reading per person, with $250 for anyone else wanting to participate).

Well, apparently the past president of Odyssey Star Productions, which was to host the event, made off with the ticket money and is nowhere to be found. According to the new president, this guy had obsconded with $60,000 to $80,000 of event money from the various venues the company arranged.
Left in the lurch is the Trans-Allegheny Asylum, who to their credit are going to proceed with the ghost hunt, though probably without the celebrities. But that doesn't make up for the disappointment felt by these (and presumably other) ticket holders:

This bothers me for a number of reasons, including the following:
1. "Ghost Hunting" is now degraded to a means of popular entertainment, further reducing hopes that this field will ever be taken seriously. I'm not referring to tours; that's how a lot of these places stay in business. This was supposed to be an active investigation.
2. Why didn't Chip Coffey predict that this would happen? Oh, right, he's not psychic, he's a medium, right? Although I find his website a bit fuzzy about who and what he actually claims to be.
The story of Brent Fair supposedly bilking TAPS fans out of $$$ (Jay and Grant have denied any link to that affair) is still fresh. This type of entertainment often attracts the same kind of people who want to get the chance to go ghost hunting and meet up with some paranormal "stars". But it shows that anyone needs to think twice about signing up for ghost hunts, especially with well-known names on the bill. I'm sure there are many legitimate people who run these things and for some it is the only way to tour alleged haunted locations. But the old caveat of Buyer Beware certainly seems to apply.
Since I haven't read of anyone who posted what it was like to go with various members of GH and GHI on the excursions advertised on the TAPS website, I have no idea if people are satisfied and feel they get their money's worth. Nevertheless this is a field that seems to attract the good and the bad, especially disturbing since its popularity has grown in the last several years.
Maybe I'm making too much of this but as one who would like to see good, scientific research and some respectibility brought to this field, things like this pose yet another setback. :(

There always be scam artists in every field.
As you say, ghost hunting is now the in thing to do.Because of these shows, whatever steps the field has taken forward, it is forced to move backwards some.
I too haven't seen what a ghost hunt with TAPS was like from a participant's viewpoint.I do think however that it would be nice if Robb and Kristen went anyhow, even if not being paid, just as a courtesy to Trans Allegheny. But only time will tell if they do so out of the goodness of their hearts or not.
yes, it's time the field got taken seriously. Paranormal activity has gone on for not a 100 years, but 1,000s of years. Ghosts are even mentioned in the Bible. The belief in ghosts and spirits is found in all cultures, and there has to be something to this. Real scientific reseach and knowledge and use of equipment would help the field. test ojects could be place on a table.A circle could be drawing around them and the circle measured as to circumfirance. Also, the position of the trigger objects could be measured from where they sit inside the circle and their distance from the edge.Photos of the object or objects could be taken showing them in the original position. Also, the door of the room could be locked, keeping people out.
Later on the area could be unlocked, and photos taken to see if the trigger objects moved. Then one could measure how much, etc.
Really sad so many people got conned out of their money. At least they will get to go on the tour.
I can't believe Chip Coffey charges so much money for a reading.
My late father's Great Aunt Louise was more of a pyschic that he is.She used to read tea leaves, and from what I could gather, never charged anyone for them. I don't see how people like him can sleep at night.Maybe you and I are in the wrong field.

I don't necessarily agree that there has to be something to it, just because the belief is found in all cultures. The ancient Greeks believed in monsters like the cyclops in "The Odyssey" because of wooly mammoth skulls they excavated. These tales were then told, retold and spread through other cultures, with minor changes made due to circumstances such as location or the attempt to make a point about morality, etc. So in essence, the belief in ghosts and spirits and their mention in ancient texts can probably be interpreted many different ways.

I didn't do that right! LOL So here is my reply again, not in a purple box!

Oh, and I completely agree with your assessment of Chip Coffey and other psychic/mediums. It's really disgusting to me how dangerous these egomaniacs can be, and the effect they can have on peoples' lives. All for monetary gain.

Logical fallacy # 12 – Appeal to Popularity
Also #4 – Appeal to Belief
However, I think we all feel there's something to it or we wouldn't even bother being here, or watching these shows.
This current rash of events just goes to show how corrupt this whole para-celeb thing is getting. Gullible is as gullible does, though these promoters are just plain mean crooks.

There's one like that here in Peoria. Rob Conover. Thinks he's a bigshot Medium/Psychic, possibly because he's been on some Cable network shows and is the "leading authority" on the local Bartonville Insane Asylum (Which TAPS is rumored to be doing a show on).
I know three girls who have had reading from him, word for word, the same reading, telling them they have breast cancer, etc (Which nonoe did).
I give zero credence to Psychics that come out and flaunt their "abilities."
Although, I did meet a girl in Georgia when I was a truck driver who just started telling me things about the people in my life that she could not have possibly known, including who my gf at the time was cheating on me with!
The point is she almost felt ashamed and apologetic that she was "reading" these things and sure wasn't showing off.

I saw a show on A&E (I think) with Chip Coffee and some "psychic kids". He was helping them learn how to live witht their abilities or something. They all met at a haunted hotel (they didn't tell the kids that the hotel was haunted). Then they were like "There's paranormal activity here, let's go investigate." He led everyone to a room where the spirit was, then told everyone he felt like the spirit just wanted to be left alone. Everyone went back downstairs. Later that evening or the next day he handed out pieces of paper and told everyone to write down what feelings they got from the spirit. Everyone had some version of "Leave me alone." He showed his paper that said the same thing and everyone was like "Gasp! We are amazing!" Of course no one seemed to rember Chip saying the spirit wanted to be left alone and the show's editors didn't bother editing it out. He's just another scam artist bilking people with the same scam psychics have been bilking people with for centuries. I predict it will keep working. Your dead grandmother told me so. She also said she loves you and misses you. She also needs $200 for a new microwave in heaven. Give me the money, I know how to get it to her.
