I grew up on the South Side of Chicago.  It's a tough, no-nonsense kind of place.  Either you get with the program or the program spits you out…in pieces.  Many neighborhoods within the South Side have roots in the "Old Country."  Funny how the "Old Country" actually represents a bunch of countries.  Anyway, that implies that along with pierogies, goulash, and heavy beers…the people also brought with them certain superstitions and various ghost stories.

Yet, the most famous ghost story told wasn't from the Old Country.  It was from right there on the South Side.  It was the story of Resurrection Mary.  Everyone knew a guy whose brother worked for a guy whose cousin, on his mother's side, knew this girl who dated a guy whose father actually encountered Resurrection Mary.  (Chicago is like that.  Very connected.  You're always two guys away from anything.  Need a new TV?  "I know a guy who knows another guy…who knows of a truck that TV's just happen to be falling out of."  Need some plutonium?  "I know a guy whose got this guy that works in shipping for labs, no problems."  Ghost stories, you're still connected, it just takes more people, usually a good 5 or 6.)

Anyway, it never occurred to me to write about it.  I guess I just kind of assumed that it was local and not a big deal.  Not until I read this story about her in the Examiner (which is quickly becoming my favorite site for tom-foolery, shenanagins and overall nuttiness) did I learn differently:

 http://www.examiner.com/x-16975-Grand-Rapids-New-Age-Examiner~y2009m8d3-Resurrection-Mary-The-Midwests-Most-Famous-Ghost

Here's another link that talks a bit more about the cemetary itself:

 http://trueillinoishaunts.com/a-2007/resurrection-cemetery/

And one more, just a few more tales:

http://www.ghostresearch.org/sites/resurrection/

I've been down Archer Avenue past the cemetery maybe…I don't know…a thousand times?  All times of the day and night.  I never saw anything but maybe I just have bad luck…or good luck…depending upon your point of view.  The cemetery itself is kind of nice actually.  It really doesn't have that classic "spooky" vibe to it, even at night.  Without the stories of Mary, I don't think people would really even look at it for ghosts or whatever.

I've seen stories or articles on this ghost for a long while but I never bothered to click on any of the links because I know the stories pretty well.  I just wasn't aware that it was one of the most famous and most documented cases in the US.

So, this kind of intrigued me.  What's the most famous ghost story where you live now or have lived in the past?  And have you been to the location?  And if so, what are your thoughts on it?

Interesting post Revenant.  You are right.  From the photos, the place would not conjure up thoughts of the paranormal or ghosts.  However, these stories went from a Mary that was buried in the cemetary that really didn't fit the story other than her name, to a Mary who went to a costume party, ironically on Halloween, and then to a Mary who was celebrating her 13th birthday.  These stories and the links that explain each Mary in almost the same fashion, seem to point to individuals embellishing the basic story to fit their own tale.

As far as ghost stories in my area, we've already seen GH investigate 20 minutes away at the Burlington County Prison in Mt. Holly, and of course we have ESP, the Betsy Ross House, Ft. Mifflin and Ft. Delaware…….  Have I ever visited these locations?  No, but I've driven and walked past the Betsy Ross House countless times since I worked in the area and also the prison in Mt. Holly many, many times.  Funny thing is, everytime I drive by the Prison, they do not seem to have any visitors so I don't think that GH investigating there was a bonus for them.  There is a local group that claims Harleigh Cemetery (where Walt Whitman is buried) in Camden is haunted and I have been there and will probably be buried there as I have close family buried in this cemetery.  Do I think the place is haunted?  Absolutely 100% not.  I will say it's open dawn to dusk and with high wrought iron fencing and security around it to the River.  It is a short block away from the local hospital, which, even if I was on my last breath, I wouldn't go to after dusk to be treated.  Not that it's a bad hospital – it is not.  In fact, I was born there many, many moons ago (no comments please) but it is now in a very high crime/rough neighborhood with Camden ranked by the FBI as the most dangerous city in the US and has been in the top 5 for a number of years.  I'm uncomfortable being there even during the day because of the crime issue but never in all my years did I ever hear of ghosts until this recent paranormal explosion.

I live in the Boston area, Massachusetts Has more Haunted locations then the UK has psychics. If I had  to pick a location  to investigate It would be without question THE MEDERIOS house. It"s located less then an hour from where I live. We watched the GH investigation and discussed the evidence. Aimee Mederious the home owner actually posted on the main  forum.

"…pierogies, goulash"–oh yes, I could go for either or both right now!  No beer as I don't drink but as for the food..let's just say that "Mrs. T" pierogies are good but nowhere near homemade.

There are countless varieties on the Resurrection Mary theme.  In fact, I just watched an episode on YouTube from a series that never quite made it to the airwaves called "The Veil".  In less than 5 minutes I knew it was going to be a re-telling of this famous tale, only this time Mary was a young lady whose car had broken down by the side of the road.

I really enjoyed the article you provided in the second link re: "Legends and Lore of Illinois".  Just the type that sends chills down my spine even though I know it's much more legend than fact.  I see a Polish girl is one of the suspects and some Polish folks also figure in the story.  Yup, we Polish really do get around!  But seriously, I enjoyed reading it and it does make me wonder what or who (if anything) was actually seen.  Nice pics, too.  Ditto for the 3rd link.

Resurrection Mary has some classic elements in it as a variation on the "damsel in distress" theme.  The relative consistency of the description may be explained away as classic as well–young, pretty, blonde (no brunettes need apply?), slim, vulnerable and needing help; the stuff of mythic legend.  Many writers, as I noted above, have taken the basics of the tale and put their own twists on it.  And why not?  It makes for a good story with the added surprise ending.

As far as stories in my old neighborhood–none, zilch, nada.  Can't explain why not.  Although our parents would always threaten us that if we misbehaved the gypsies would kidnap us.  Which seemed a real threat since back then there was a gypsy encampment down nearer the river, about two miles away and we would occasionally see some gypsy women in their colorful skirts walking around our neighborhood.  Same goes for where we live now.  Can't tell you why; there are a lot of people whose parents/grandparents are from the "Old Country" but if they have stories to tell, they're not talking.Wink

Paul Anthony mentioned the Mederios house in Norton, Ma as being a place to see.

The house is very near King Philip's Caves.    Legend has it that the caves are haunted by Indians who hid there in a major Indian uprising in New England in the 1670's.

However something even more interesting is located in Norton – the Devil's foot print.  The legend is that the late 1600's/early 1700's a man suddenly became very wealthy with no apparent means - except selling his soul to the Devil.   Upon his death the Devil came to claim the soul but was interupted by the man's family.   The Devil took the body and jumped out the window landing on a large rock.    To this day there is a fairly deep impression in the rock where the Devil's foot landed and burnt in.    I have seen it and it is impressive.

Hmmm…pretty interesting.  Apparently, that's not the only "Devil print" in the area.  Thanks for bring this up.  Here's a site that has a few pictures and tells a couple of stories about them:

Thanks for the article Revenant.     This is a bit like Mary's story, the story in the article is essentially the same I have heard many times but the name of the person is different.    The name I have heard from many different people is James Wetherall.

Wallydraigle,

Are you saying that was better than watching GHI last night?  I'm guessing that's so.

By the way, didn't you mean "hawesome"?  Wink Laughing

I don't give them any more advertising money by watching their show, so I don't know what went down.  Actually, I can probably guess, since every episode is exactly the same, but I digress.  I just thought the magic exploding link was pretty cool.  I noticed I had a typo in my post so I edited, and when I got back to the topic the link was all weird.  So I went to the edit screen again and it looked normal, so I did nothing and went back to the topic and it was even bigger than before.  If I did it just a few more times it could eat the board, maybe the whole internet.

Well, from my vantage point, your posting problem was more exciting than GHI!  Believe me, you're not missing anything.  It's gotten pretty pathetic.  I can't imagine they can chug on much longer.  I'm sure they will release positive press time and time again to make people believe they are doing great but their die-hard fans don't seem to be buying it either from what I've heard and seen.  Thankfully, from the commercial I heard, next week is their end of summer season finale.

I, too, grew up in the Chicagoland area.  But Resurrection Mary wasn't really the haunted stuff we talked about.  It was all about Bachelor's Grove.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor's_Grove_Cemetery

It seems like everyone I knew had some sort of experience who knew someone who did.  Mostly just simple creepy stuff.  I think most of them were just stupid kids who got scared by the place's reputation.

I myself have been there several times(all in the day time, because I have a fear of being arrested…)and haven't really experienced anything that I could write home about.  Distant voices and weird sounds, but that can probably be attributed to the nearby 143rd.

As far as down at my current residence in Knoxville, Tn.  We've got nothing good :(

Jof,
I can't understand the comment on the lack of ghosts in Knoxville.
Everytime I see Florida play UT, the UT players get killed on the field.

I had heard about Bachelor's Grove when I was still in Chicago, but really only in reference to Al Capone and him supposedly dumping bodies there.  I've never been there myself since there was never really a reason for me to go to Oak Forest or Midlothian.

A few years back, I swear a saw a show that featured this place.  It was a short lived paranormal show that feature older teens checking out haunted locations.  I can't remember the name of it or even the channel it was on.  The only thing that drew my attention was that they were in Illinois.  From the pictures that I've seen, it "looked" like the same place.  Anyway, the show itself was dreadful.  I wasn't surprised that it was canceled…I was surprised that it was even made in the first place… Laughing

And by the way, if interested, in the second link in my original post, this location is listed.  If you want to check it out, look in the column on the right.  It's listed under the 2007 heading.

Oubliette, if you're ever in Savannah you need to make a visit there.
Bonaventure Cemetery affects people in different ways, but you will be changed by your visit.
Oh, and take a picnic lunch and eat by the river, you'll be there all day.
It's an amazing place.

Edit: Click on the tree view link for some beautiful shots of the city.

blinddog- As a fervant UT Hater, I hope you guys destroy them again.

Rev-  I totally remember watching that show!  And you're right, it was horrible.  Especially when you know how large(or in this case, tiny) BG actually is.  I don't remember what the exact situation was, but it was pertaining to someone hearing or seeing something..and the unspoken reality that it was from a spot that was like, 10 feet away from them.  Crap, I wish I could remember how it went.

Going back on the original topic, there is a lot of people that claim Archer Avenue, itself, is haunted.

http://www.prairieghosts.com/archerave.html

I was talking to my dad about it the other night and he claimed he had seen the lights at Maple Lake.  He also had some good Bachelor's Grove stories, but they all seemed to involve booze and male/female fratenization.

I know.  It's driving me crazy now.  Usually I'm pretty good with names of shows too.  I saw another one.  A couple of girls went to a shack/cabin/house out west somewhere.  Something made a noise and they went screaming out of the house.  I felt bad for the sound-guy.  He probably still can't hear well after that… Laughing  I'll keep digging and see if I can find the name of that show.

Blinddog- The Bonaventure cemetery looks amazing.  Thanks for the link.  The only cemetery that I've personally seen that could maybe rival it is the Recoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  I haven't looked for ghost stories about it, but I'm sure it has to have a few.

Now, if only we could get the ghost dogs from Bonaventure cemetery to chase out the feral cats at the Recoleta cemetery…we'd be golden.  It's very odd looking at a mausoleum and then turning around to see a cat staring into the same one.
