Just thought I'd through this out there to hear what you all might think. The other day I was watching a program on the Science Channel about Parallel Universes and the M Theory. (M=membranes).

Now as a layman, (or laywoman) I am not sure how to summarize what M Theory is, but the theory basically allows for the possibility of multiple parallel universes. What if an EVP is some sort of communication or frequency being picked up of one such parallel universe?

I saw that show too and was thinking something similar at the time, like EVP's could be some sort of crosstalk between parallel universes.

However, my understanding is that EVP's seem to be more prevalent at certain sites that are associated with traumatic death. That would perhaps indicate that the phenomenon is restricted to events that happen in our universe.

I think trying to determine the true nature of what EVP's are is the most fascinating and important thing about the paranormal for me.

We talk of 'Residual Haunts' as energy that was somehow trapped in space and that image or scene gets replayed over and over again. Why would an EVP be any different? Would it not just be trapped vocal energy being replayed? It would then just be a 'Residual Voice.'

If all paranormal activity can be reduced to 'trapped energy' then you would in theory have the potential for energy to be trapped in a variety of forms: sound, light, heat, etc.

Sorry, just a working theory I'm playing with.

WBFA– Now, I'll have to admit that my M Theory is a bit hazy, but as far as I understand it, if another brane were to intersect with our own, the effects would be… noticeable. Like, another Big Bang kind of noticeable. Other than that, my basic understanding is that parallel universes can't communicate in any way with ours. I like it in that it's a scientific hypothesis, though, and we may someday find out an answer.

Jim– as far as I know, no one has ever done the experiment of putting down recorders in multiple, distributed locations, evaluating them blind, and trying to correlate the number of EVPs found with violent death. That'd be an interesting experiment, but it would be tricky to do without confirmation bias.

I don't place much stock in EVPs, especially since the popular ways of gathering them seem optimized toward false positives. I did a small experiment of my own on them (which doesn't prove anything one way or the other), and wrote my experiences up here.
