Ghost city…mirage…or vortex to a lost civilization?

(be sure to check out the video at the bottom of that one)
So my vote? Vortex. If in doubt…always go with the vortex…

Hehheh. Those vortexes make for great radio DX.
I've actually seen one of these. They are, or at least the one I saw was caused by a very strong temperature inversion. The difference between the one I saw was that everything was up-side-down. I saw up side down boats floating in the sky and islands with mirror images of themselves into the sky. I even have a crappy photo of the mirrored island.

The boats didn't photograph well.
Strong temperature inversions like this carry VHF/UHF radio signals that are normally line of sight and light over the horizon. This is the most probable explanation for the Min Min lights here in Australia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M….._Min_light where camp fires are refracted over the horizon.
Not sure why the Chinese one is the right way up.

…because its a vortex and a vortex doesn't need to play by your rules…
:P
Thanks for the picture. Very cool. I've never personally seen anything like that before. I've only see the typical road-side type because of extreme heat. How long did the one that you took a picture of last? And how did it look from different angles?

It is sometimes conjectured that the Vikings knew of Iceland through arctic mirages and thus had incentive to try to find it. Often you get spikes or towers (in warmer latitudes) known as the Fata Morgana which was so named as it translates directly to Fairy Morgana as the Italians thought they saw her castles and towers across the Straits of Messina. That appears to be the type that Learjet's photo shows. See also:

While never having seen cities that were projected, I have seen brief glimpses of mountains.

I think it lasted for a couple of hours. With radio it can last a lot longer. It needs to be more extreme for the effect to be seen.
The height it was viewed from was very critical. It was best seen half way up a hill. At the bottom and top it wasn't as good. Same applies to radio ducting. Sometimes the antenna can be too high or low and miss the sweetspot.

If the Xin'an River river buildings were a mirage, wouldn't they be flipped upside down?
The solution is much simpler. The buildings and trees are actually for real. The buildings seem to float simply because the river is covered with mist. And the trees pop out from the water because the water level is high.
