Ruined my day, Blinddog.  I had been thinking of Jeane Dixon. . .the one person I thought might have some ability, but, alas, her predictions were so broad that she would eventually get one right.

I liked the New Zealand chart which list common names, subjects and other things that cold readers use to make them look psychic. http://www.skeptics.org.nz/download/mediumchecklist.pdf

The Kiwi's also offer a reward (NZ$100,000 about US$75,000):  "Psychics – we challenge you to use psychic means to find two halves of a promissory note hidden within 100 metres of the Challenge display at Puzzling World, New Zealand."  http://www.psychicchallenge.co.nz/  No one has claimed the money.  However, they pay a fee of $1,000 to try.

LOL!!!!!  Now that's funny.  I think I will try my hand at this 'mind-reading' business.  *Puts on turban.  Puts empty envelope up to forehead*

Here are my predictions -

someone that posts on these boards likes to eat pizza

someone that posts on these boards drives a gray or silver car.  Or a pickup truck.

(that image is a bit fuzzy.  But it does run on gas… am I right?)

someone that posts on these boards owns a Labrador Retriever.

someone that posts on these boards lives in house with light-colored siding

someone that posts on these boards has taken a vacation to Walt Disney World

Okay.  Those are my predictions.  How did I do?

I should ask for my own TV show.  Then I can buy an Inn.  On second thought, make that a condo in Hawaii.  ;)

Mary,

Can I come visit?  I'm going for that town with the castle in England Mary.   All are welcome.  There will be room at my Inn.

Sure you can visit!

Anyone can visit, except Jason and Grant.  I wouldn't want them whipping out electronic equipment and Grant saying, "Did you see that?  It looked like the ghost of King Kamehameha!"

"Nah," Jason would reply, "I'm positive it was Don Ho."

Great.  Lets see only the one about the pizza.  I went to the one and only Disney there was when I was a kid.  I used to have a Lab.   But, see you would be right; you were just remembering my past.

I want a huge beach house on the Outer Banks in NC.  Everyone is welcomed.  We could travel from Inn to Inn.

This is the very first quote in the article:

"…we [psychics] are here to heal people and to help people grow…skeptics…they're just here to destroy people. They're not here to encourage people, to enlighten people. They're here to destroy people." –James Van Praagh on "Larry King Live," March 6, 2001

Hmmm…looks like we have some options here:

A) Believe in me because I am here to heal and help people grow…as long as you have cash or a major credit card.

B) You do not need to state that you believe in me if you promise to give me free publicity and not give me any hardball questions to answer like my good friend Larry King.

C) Do not believe in me and you are only out to destroy people.

So many options….but I am going to have to go with option "C."  As a skeptic, I was unaware that I had the power to destroy someone…but if I did, I would certainly use it on Mr. Van Praagh.

Actually, Van Praagh was just on the Larry King show again, last Friday.  I only caught the very end.  By that point, three other people had joined him and were talking about how….not sure if I'm getting this right but…that thoughts were real because they were energy and positive thoughts were like tonics to the body while negative thoughts were like toxins.  They went on but I'm just not up on my New Age jargon so it was a bit hard for me to follow along.

And what is with Larry King?  Some interviews, he does a decent job.  Asks decent questions.  He gets a psychic or medium up there and turns to pudding.  He just kind of lets them say whatever they want and doesn't challenge it in the least.  I just don't get it.

I do not know what is up with Larry King.  Seems as though some previously tough, or decent interviewer's brains turn to mush when talking a psychic.   However, I thought I would look and see if Larry King had a soft spot for cold readers.  Didn't really find anything, except a bunch of his interviews with psychics.

But I did find something very exciting:  Certified Psychics: American Association of Professional Psychics, Registered with the US Government. Well, I did another search on Larry King and used the term paranormal and found several articles questioning his giving serious airtime to Ufos, exorcism, psychics, etc.

What's up with the Larry King Show's outrageous promotion of UFOs, psychics, and spiritualists?

Larry King and James Van Praaagh are also discussed in Joe Nickell's book, Adventures in Paranormal Investigation. http://books.google.com/books?id=hSmW_I8nonkC&pg=PA87&lpg=PA87&dq=Does+Larry+King+believe+in+the+paranormal%3F&source=bl&ots=TeC5fhH46C&sig=Mn2uEA9pOfoqlU2DwlOIgxsj9wI&hl=en&ei=gs8USrC2KY_wtAPcm8WVCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=7

Thanks for all the links within your last two posts.  Let's take a look at a part of the FAQ at this website:

Accuracy and Free Will

If a Psychic foresees something in my future that I don’t like, can I change it? Is my future fixed?

"Life has an open door policy. There are an infinite number of ways to approach life's challenges.

This needs to be clear: You control your life. When a psychic sees future events, they are seeing the most likely results of the current momentum in your life. Momentum is one’s spiritual velocity; it’s the course we set forth by our motivations, intentions and beliefs. Any momentum you have created, you can uncreate and, ultimately, change the final outcome.

It would be rare for a Psychic to simply say “You will loose your job next year”. Your Psychic will see more about the internal and external conditions that would lead to that event. This would be their focus and direction of the reading. To empower you to make the best choices to ‘uncreate’ your current momentum, if that is, indeed, what you ultimately wish to do!"

This is pretty cool if I'm the psychic.  It means that I can tell you anything about the future.  If it comes true, wow…I'm pretty powerful.  If it doesn't come true, you've done something yourself to "uncreate" your "momentum" and thus change what I saw…wow.  I win either way.  Nice set-up…

I also liked the Larry King links.  Glad I'm not alone.  I don't really watch Larry King all that much.  But from what I've seen, it disappoints me in the way he handles paranormal topics.

Lastly, I did like what I've read in Joe Nickell's "Adventures in Paranormal Investigation."  I'm going to have to pick that book up.  You know, Stephen said that he might write a few book reviews for the site…maybe this could be one of them.  In any event, it did a great job is showing what Van Praagh really is…just a cold reader.  An excellent cold reader, but nothing more.  It's a skill anyone can learn.  I did a pretty good job of it once and I only practiced for a few weeks.  I've said this many times on the site…if its strictly for entertainment, fine.  Start taking money for it from people who truly "believe"…and it's criminal.  It's just out right fraud.

Sure.  My day is not complete unless I've destroyed at least 3 people.

What an a******.  He and others like him have caused more emotional traumas in desperate people than all the skeptics in the world combined.  We are only out to expose psychics like Sylvia Browne, John Edward, Chip Coffey and a myriad of others for the harm they are doing and the shameless way they are doing it.

Esp. Sylvia Browne.  I have seen the palpable harm she has done on people's faces when she makes a very blatant error, along with her very unsympathetic attitude.  I cringe when I pass her books in the library, and want to know why they carry such nonsense.
