First, a thanks to Hannah for introducing me to Fiona Broome. More about her can be found in Hannah's thread:
http://www.skepticalviewer.com/forums/ghost-hunters/spalding-inn-more-haunted-than-the-myrtles-plantation/page-1
Now…what is this "ovilus?" Glad you asked. I first came across it here:
http://fionabroome.com/ovilus-v-psychics/
There seems to be some concern that this ovilus may take the place of psychics. I found this intriguing. But, I still wasn't absolutely sure what it was.
So…behold…the mighty ovilus:
http://digitaldowsing.com/Ovilus1.htm
Personally, I like the "Yes/No" mode. Kind of like a digital Magic 8 Ball. Sweet…
I do like writing these types of posts. Can't wait for the 8,000 word posts by Nosfer, Learjet, and Stephen as to why this device might be…a bit questionable. Ok then…have fun guys.

LOL, I don't need 8000 words to tell what I think of this POS.
Two of the funniest youtubes I've ever seen demonstrate that it's just a random word generator.

Sometimes I will buy gadgets to understand them better but this obvious gimmick isn't worth the effort or money.
Run!

I think psyhics have very good reason to be concerned. This device could easily replace them on paranormal investigations since psychics primary role is to generate random information. It's smaller, lighter, runs on a single battery, and has a strong scientific voice like Stephen Hawking. I'm going to write an iPhone app that does the same thing and make me some serious money.
|
Hee hee hee! "Get her!" That was your whole plan, huh, "get her." Very scientific.

Designed to go in the field this device is ready to assist in paranormal investigations! Able to create speech and phonetic speech from the immediate environment you'll quickly make this device the corner stone of your field investigations.
If it replaces Chip, I will gladly buy one for PS.
I love the instructional manual.

I think it's hilarious the disclaimer they give in the Manual. Must be over 18, don't use with alcohol, entertainment purposes only, odds of phonetic speech pretty high, just a coincidence and nothing more. That about says it all!
Not sure what I'm going to do for the other 7961 words, though!!!! LOL

Remember the Twilight Zone episode "Nick In Time" with William Shatner? This looks like a modernized version of the Ovilus.

'should not be used by anyone with a history of mental illness'
Well, that pretty much puts me on the bench.
Oubliette, I remember when that episode originally aired. Damn, I don't want to think about it.
One show that always scared me as a wee one was a show(and you have to have a first class ticket on The Way Back Machine to remember this one) called Masquerade Party.
The guest would come out and set with the host wearing a mask and a celebrity panel would have to guess who they were.
Kind of like I've Got A Secret, except creepy as sh*t.

We could send him a tee-shirt that says that and he could wear it on all his "investigations"

Who says that it isn't a modernized version of the Ovilus? I think the "devil head" on top of it would indicate the "Do not allow children under 18 to operate this device" portion of the instruction manual.

Seriously, I would love to see Randi tackle this one in his YouTube posts! Maybe it will put psychics out of business, and for that we should be grateful, I guess.

Yep, even the guy who "created" the "Ovilus" and the "Paranormal Puck", Bill Chappell, says "I state these devices are for Entertainment Purposes only". You can read the rest here: http://www.digitaldowsing.com/wtp1.htm
He is going to be at the Darkness Radio Psience Fair in September of 2009, probably to try and sell some more… http://www.darknessradio.com/TRIPS/PSIence/index.htm
@ Learjet I thought I would die laughing watching those youtube videos "see Larry run. run Larry run. run to the sun and the moon and take those 2 women with you"

Both of these links are really quite interesting, Phillyk. Thanks.
The first one is a rather curious read. Mr. Chappell claims that it began as a joke, yet seems to have fallen for it anyhow. Odd. It's like me doing the disappearing coin trick and then turning around and believing that I actually made the coin disappear into thin air. Just…odd.
Looking at the Darkness Radio PSIence Fair line-up was odd too. Kind of what you would expect. My favorite…Marie D. Jones, author of "PSIence: How New Discoveries in Quantum Physics and New Science May Explain the Existence of Paranormal Phenomena." Is it just me or is anyone else getting sick of people who aren't even scientists giving us their views on quantum physics and how it can relate to not only the real world, but the paranormal as well? Want to talk about quantum physics? Cool. Show me your Ph.D. in physics and I'll clear my schedule. I'll even buy the first couple of rounds…
Anyway, I'm going through the list and Dr. Michael Shermer's name pops up! I did the double take at the monitor. He's delivering the presentation of "Skepticism 101: The Power of Belief." Having an actual skeptic at the PSIence Fair? I have to give them a little credit there…

Wonder if the Ovilus is going to be used on Ghost Hunters? Grant did say they were going to be using some new devices.

Here's how I envision the tee-shirt-
I SEE DEAD PEOPLE!*
