Recently while wandering through our local public library I picked up a copy of this book, The Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Spirits by Rosemary Guiley. I have started to peruse it and am really enjoying it. While it does appear to be a straight forward "dictionary" of haunts and hauntings and is very easy and enjoyable to read, I am also wondering if any viewers of this sight have read it and find it to be knowledgable and reputable. Are there other better books out there? Can anyone recommend similiar books I "should" own? I am interested in building a good solid library of paranormal literature and would really welcome a list of your own must reads. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have not read that particular book so I can not give you any sort of help there. But, I have not come empty-handed…
You said "I am interested in building a good solid library of paranormal literature…" I will suggest three books that may help to balance your collection. After all, you did come to the Skeptical Viewer…
"Adventures In Paranormal Investigation" by Joe Nickell. His website can be found here.
"The Skeptic Encyclopedia Of Pseudoscience" by Michael Shermer. Some of what he has written can be found here.
"The Demon Haunted World" by Carl Sagan. More on Dr Sagan can be found here.
As for "straight" information on ghosts…I'd offer only one:
"Ghosts By Gaslight: The History and Mystery of the Spirualists and the Ghost Hunters" by Troy Taylor. His website can be found here. It presents a more historical look at the paranormal.
Ok, so…hope this helps you.

This post looks like the interest is more geared to the Ghosts and Spirits aspect, but on a broader horizon, I'd also recommend:
Ancient Mysteries by Peter James and Nick Thorpe
Very excellent book covering many topics from UFOs, Hoaxes, Earth Patterns, Lost Lands, Archaeology and the Supernatural etc etc.

"The Skeptic's Guide to the Paranormal" by Lynne Kelley is a good one that covers such topics as levitations, numerology, the predictions of Nostradamus, ESP, spontaneous human combustion, etc. Gives scientific explanations for a lot of "paranormal" activity, in layman's terms. It's a pretty good read, and I got mine on Amazon used for 23 cents plus shipping! :)

First or Second Edition of Guiley's book that was cited? I would suggest buying any of Guiley's work. I think all are first quality.

Thank you thank you thank you! I am madly making my list to go book shopping, all your suggestions sound great! I do tend to gravitate towards ghosts, spirits, and the like but I welcome all your input here. Thank you so much!
