A team of cryptozoologists are claiming something extraordinary from a recent trip to Sumatra. They claim they saw the Orang Pendek. No video or photographs were taken to substantiate this claim. Plaster casts were made of the tracks. But most interestingly…hair samples were taken. Apparently, many of the hairs still have the medulla (which is great when trying to test for DNA). The full story, as it is, can be found here:

Adam Davies was involved with another expedition some years back. The plaster casts of the tracks were interesting, but little came of the hair, probably due to contamination. So, perhaps a bit of caution in getting excited about this. Let's see what the DNA evidence has to say.
The CRZ (the Centre for Fortean Zoology) is invovled with this as well. I'll just say that I'm not a great big fan of theirs and leave it at that. Their link can be found here.

I've been keeping an eye on this story for the past few days. It will be interesting to see how this developes. First of all they have the possible DNA evedience from the pieces of vegetation that it was chewing on. I know that if it is not a known animal it won't be able to tell us what it is, but at least it could tell us what it isn't. Sort of. Also, they say that they have some goood casts of footprints left behind. I'd like to see those, and compare them to the orangutang(sp?).
One thing that bothers me the most is that they did not get any photos of this 'creature', and the excuse they give. (Another poster brought this up on the cryptomundo site, and I kinda agree) It was said that they were more focused on getting a really good look at this thing, and didn't want to risk trying to take a pic that would probably not turn out well anyway. On the one hand, I understand that way of thinking, and I can't say that I would not do the same in that situation. I would probably be so shocked at seeing it that I would forget all about the camera. Maybe. On the other hand, they ARE there to gather proof, evidence, etc. so that camera should be #1 priority, right? I would say that it is very possible to get a good look at the thing through the lens of your camera, especially with a zoom!
I don't know…Like I said, it will be interseting to see wher this goes.
(It's probably just a lost orangutang )

It does seem odd that they wouldn't at least try to take a picture just because it wasn't perfect conditions. Unless, like you said, they were so surprised by actually seeing it that they forgot about taking pics and are now too embarrassed to admit it.

Agree about the lack of photo, but then again we wouldn't be satisfied with any photo result really. Blurry would be laughed at, clear would be photoshopped and none would be, well like they got.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting and exciting.
Remember when DT went in search of the Orang Pendek? They met up with a team that had been there, I think, for 2 years and in their opinion the creature is real. Don't remember if Davis was with that particular one. I seem to remember that a British woman seemed to be in charge of the search. According to an interview, this cryptid ranks as #1 on Josh's list of creatures that almost certainly exist.
This new report does spur hope that definitive proof will be found, or better yet, a real speciman can be caught. Sounds like scientists are getting very close on this one.
