In the first of these, Josh goes to an island to investigate a prison. Amazing what you can glean just from a title! Unfortunately, what I also can glean is that we have another ghost hunt type of episode. I'm really hoping that this doesn't involve taking the evidence to the experts in Warwick. The prison is a bit more overgrown than most of the ones GH (or GA) visits, but other than that, we can probably expect the same noises and reactions that we've come to know and love.
Next, we get back to the original formula of the show and the DT crew goes to Argentina to investigate sightings of the Ucumar. In July of last year some ranchers in Argentina came across this Bigfoot/Yeren/Yeti-like creature. They supposedly killed it and took it's head as proof. I don't know if this is the story that Josh will be investigating (it almost seems to recent since many of their newspaper clippings that they reprint are from the early 2000s, but who knows)
The Ucumar is a fanged, hairy, man-like creature about the size of a large dog (though this varies and some reports are of 17-inch tracks) and it walks on two legs. It has sometimes been described as a short fat bear. Maybe they'll come across a South-American Short-Faced Bear cub and things will get really exciting. In fact, a local bear is a possible explanation for what has sometimes been seen although the two-legged walking (at least for any sizable distance) is a stretch as was proven during the Bayou Beast.
The creature that the ranchers killed in July, however, may be explained as an out-of-place ape.

Loys' Ape!

Well, except for the size, the location, the probability that Loys' Ape was just a big spider monkey…but still.

Rip tide, eh, they got out of that pretty easily, must have been a pretty weak rip tide…and one that went in reverse.

The growl just after the footprint in the cave was something I've heard before very distinctly…I'd put pretty good money on it being a bear.

It still amazes me that people can go into a delapidated prison in the middle of the jungle that has been over taken by wildlife and then act dumbfounded that they hear noises.
What happened to the 2 guys from last season that they always teamed up together? Can't remember their names but I remember saying that I felt that SciFi had a spinoff intended for them because of the way they always followed them and paired them and this season their gone.

Seems this show has changed a bit since last season. I don't care for the camera they wear that points at their face. Personally, I could careless about seeing so much of their reactions to claimed shadow masses and or sounds. Secondly, I get the idea that the places being investigated are located in a remote location, do they have to add the stupid stunts to the show (jumping from helecopters)? Next season are they going to show us how to survive if trapped in a supposedly haunted location Bear Grylls' style?

Nothing has changed since earlier seasons in either of those regards. Getting to the location has always been part of the "adventure" consisting of broken down vehicles, kayaks, rafts and waterfalls etc. The cameras pointed in their face have been there since Day 3 or so…nothing new with those this season.

Hmmm…not sure what to think about the Ucumar/Andean bear (or Spectacled bear).
On the one hand, I like that they matched up the legend to something real…that it makes sense and they found a bit of physical proof in the paw print.
On the other hand…I'm not exactly sure why this is a mystery. I was kind of under the impression that the Andean bear had always wandered in and out of NW Argentina:
http://www.andeanbear.org/bear…..ology.html
Yes, it's endangered, so it's always good to see proof of them…but…just not sure why it's significant. Especially when the museum guy (can't remember his name) seemed so stunned at the notion of one being in Argentina. Now…I am NO expert on this species (or any species for that matter) so I bow to his expertise. I just thought that they had always been around there. And…I can't find any website that doesn't place them in NW Argentina (perhaps not densely populated or breeding there, but at least acknowledged as a legitimate site for them), Hmmm…I'm uncertain if that particular scene wasn't…um…creatively edited at some point.
So again, just kind of scratching my head over this one…

Alright…now to my hint above about short-faced bears. The link mentions it in that the spectacled bear is somewhat of a species of said short-faced bear, it is in fact the last living species in it's subfamily, others of which include the famous Florida Cave Bear. It doesn't end there, though. What do you think one of the local names is for that bear? It's worth a few points so think carefully. There are a few so the number of points will depend upon the relevancy. Answer to be given this weekend.

"Ucumari"?
So if we can extract some Arctodus simus DNA sequences and splice them into the Spectacled Bear's genome….Shiver!

Ucumari? Now you're just making up names right? I mean if only all connections would be that simple! That would be like if there was a creature in, I don't know, the Himalayas called a Yet.
You are right, though, Ucumari (Jukumari is another) is a name applied to that specific bear already. Size is interesting in that some of the claims are of quite smaller animals being seen as the Ucumar though some have been attributed to it being a young beast. I wonder if this is a bit of a divergence sort of along the lines of how the Chupacabra morphed.

The show took only a 0.849 million-viewer rating.

Not surprising. Changing nights (from Thursday to Tuesday) typically drags down numbers…especially without any sort of "lead-in." FoF switched nights, but…they have new GH episodes as their lead-in. The switch won't be as painful for them.
I don't know why but…I'd rather have DT back on Thurdays. No exact reason why…maybe closer to the weekend and they always do week-end kind of things (boating, dirt bikes, sliding down cliffs at night…)?

Funnily, I agree, for some reason it just doesn't seem like a beginning of the week show…none of them do, really. I guess also with DT being the best of the 3 (at least to me, and hey, we're talking relative, not absolutes!) it would be nice to end the viewing with that one, too. A sort of "high-note" as it were. What do we get, though?
