A Look At Cryptozoology
by Revenant
I like Cryptozoology. There, I said it. It's now out in the open. You see, as a skeptic, I am in the minority. Many big-name skeptics will write how cryptozoology is pseudoscience, then take an intellectual bazooka and blow it into smithereens. I'm not going to do that. First, I much prefer a sniper rifle. Second, I do find cryptozoology to be both useful and entertaining. I'm not saying that I don't have a few problems with it, which I shall address shortly, but I do think that there is a place for it. Let's start with a bit of background first.

MQ: Devils In New Jersey
by Oubliette
As a native-born New Jerseyan, I was happy to learn that MonsterQuest was going to investigate my home state’s most famous resident, the Jersey Devil. Other states have their lake monsters, swamp creatures and other assorted unknown beasts, but the Jersey Devil is, like the state itself, quite unique.

MQ: Giant Rats
Out of the plethora of MonsterQuest episodes I haven't written up, why pick "Giant Rats" to write about? Well, because although they're not terribly interesting, their situation is: namely, lots of people report seeing them — yet there is absolutely no scientific evidence to support their existence… until now! Just kidding, there still isn't.

MQ: Hairy Man
This is one of a number of MonsterQuest episodes that revolve around the animal commonly known as "Bigfoot". Since there are reports of such a creature not only throughout the United States and Canada, but also elsewhere around the world — not to mention legends dating back centuries or more — MonsterQuest has dedicated episodes to specific locations and legends. In this case, they focus on the many Native American legends surrounding the "Hair Man" (known to different tribes by various other names as well).

Chupacabra means "Goat Sucker" in Spanish. The name comes from the victims of this creature's apparent predation: goats and smaller farm animals, found with puncture wounds around the neck and apparently drained of blood. The first epidemic of animals found like this seems to have occurred around fifteen years ago in Puerto Rico. Locals who believed they saw the creature described it as somewhat humanoid, with kangaroo-like hind legs and glowing red eyes. Needless to say, outside of Puerto Rico this made for a good story but no one really took it seriously.

MQ: The Black Beast of Exmoor
In the idyllic English countryside witnesses claim to have seen a monstrous black cat. Livestock has been slaughtered and one man claims to have been attacked. Thus begins Monster Quests's search for a giant predatory cat in the British Isles.

MQ: Ohio Grass Man
As befitting a creature as legendary (and reportedly widespread) as Bigfoot, MonsterQuest has put together a number of entirely separate local investigations dealing specifically with reports from one region or another. In this particular investigation, they examined reports of a "Grass Man" in Ohio. Although it's clear many regions have local names that apply specifically to the creatures reported in their local area, this is often due in part to the creatures reportedly having physical or behavioral peculiarities that set them apart from similar creatures reported elsewhere in the world.
