GH: Scully House

When a little boy told his parents about other children playing with his toys and a mysterious man in his room, none of which seem to actually exist, his parents became quite frightened. As members of a local paranormal group they believed this most likely explanation was some sort of haunting, and called in the TAPS team hoping they could offer some assistance. This is precisely the sort of investigation Jay & Grant have always said takes top priority for them, but I believe this is the first time Pilgrim has cut such an investigation to take an entire episode by itself (thereby conveying the importance… or something).

JM @ 11:15 pm

Well, this season of GH has been, for better or worse, rather lackluster so far. Here we finally get the first "moving object" of the season (if I'm wrong please correct me).

I have to say, I was a bit underwhelmed. The moment the stroller moved I bust a gut laughing. Half of it _conveniently_ isn't in the shot, even though they moved the stroller, which they suspected of having been moved, _into_ the camera so they could record the ghostly telekinesis.

You'd think they'd want to ward off skeptics by having the full view of the thing…but no. You'd think they could just zoom the camera out a bit to include both the stroller and the bed (the bed being the other thing that supposedly moved according the family). But no.

Anyway, question for you all: The footsteps they heard in the house…did anyone notice a rather odd hissing sound that was going on during those "phenomena"? I very certain it wasn't a part of Pilgrim's bucket o' spooky sounds, and what it sounds like to me is just _too_ boneheaded a thing for Jason and Grant to have missed.

I mean, it sounds like a central air conditioning system blowing. You see where I'm going with this: Cold Air flows through the vents and ducts, causing popping sounds in a progressive sequence that mimics the sound of someone walking from one end of the hallway/room to the other. This would also likely explain why from the downstairs, the steps sound like they're coming from upstairs, and vice versa.

Is there something else that sound could be that I'm missing? They've historically been pretty keen on ruling out plumbing and heating/AC sounds as ghosts.

hammer1 @ 11:19 pm

I thought this episode was pretty good. I'm glad I decided to give it a spin instead of deleting it from the DVR.

J&G seemed genuinely into the "hunt" with all the footsteps and stuff they were hearing. Jay especially seemed amped up for what they were experiencing. Also no Tango and Steve comedy, and I liked the new guy and Britt as a team. Thought they meshed pretty good.

With the moving stroller video (I think it was a stroller), you couldn't see the whole stroller in the picture… part of it was out of frame. Also there was no timestamp that I could see, so again we are left having to take GH's word for it, which is always dicey.

This condo is part of a 3 unit L-shaped building. This unit was sold on January 16, 2009 to the Scully's for $73,500. They listed it for sale on March 31, 2010 for $199,900 and then dropped the price on April 27, 2010 (2 days before the episode aired on GH) to $189,900. The condo next door (#8) was sold on August 20, 2009 for $98,900 flipped and sold on December 4, 2009 for $192,000. The property backs up to the Charles River and is next door to a rather several large old mill buildings and fields across the road. It is very close to a fast paced road with the sidewalk being virtually right outside the front door. Just consider those possibilities with regard to some of these "experiences".

Yet, we are given to believe that in the space of less than 12 months, they renovated the condo (forgot any attic/room insulation), moved in, had these experiences, took their son to the pediatrician, then took him to a mental health practioner for an evaluation, had a paranormal group investigate, followed by a medium and then someone contacted GH/TAPS/Pilgrim to negotiate putting the house on a segment of GH. I say less than 12 months because they had to finish renovations which, at a minimum, would have taken 1-2 months and it was obviously after the extremely heavy snowfall and cold weather we had on the East Coast December into March. There were no leaves on the trees and they start gut wearing t-shirts with lighter jackets followid a few days laper at the reveal and driving away wearing t-shirts.

However, we hear from the owner that they've lived there "for a little ovez a year and a half". Fuzzy math? She also olaims the house was converted if the 1980's. #No, try 2004./Then, the back of the units they show are units #8 and #6 and not #10 which is the unit they are investigating. Interesting.

Guess the owner never reached her "ultimate goal" to make the family comfortable in the house even with all the great advice and direction GH/TAPS gave her.

Yes Grant, I think you did empower Michelle with all that "help" …. all the way to the realtors and a 60% flip as well as getting the house on television in this very difficult housing market. Smart cookies! Great job Jason and Grant!

As a footnote, anyone living in an apartment, condo or townhome can hear the same footsteps, especially when you are in an older building that's been converted. Living in a much newer townhouse, I hear my neighbor going up and down their stairs constantly.

jcarton @ 4:36 am

I see where you are heading alicat. Nothing Jason and Grant does or says anymore is believable to me. The owner did seem to be selling a story she rehearsed and looks like not a very accurate one. Thank you for the research. GH has really sunk to the bottom of the barell.

On the noises in the walls we hearg those too in our old house. Tuned out it was field mice and if they were that close to a mill in a house built back then my guess would be either mice or rats. Did you see that hole in the wall in one of the bedrooms by the outlet? If the walls are like ours they are pretty thin. They never even checked to aee if there was a family with kids next door. I think the son was just scared being in a new house and made up stories. The woman never revealed the outcome of the testing.

They never tried to debunk any shadows by going outside so I think they knew the answer. I also found it strange that she let out an gasp when Jason told her each team had their own experiences.

I didnt buy any of this on either side. To me it seemed like they needed to come full circle and go to a place like this to try to redeem themselves and the owner just wanted to move.

alicat @ 8:15 am

Sorry JM, this house does not have central air conditioning.

Thank you jcarton. I do try to be accurate. In fact, I need to amend the listing date from March 31 to March 29, 2010.

JM @ 3:55 pm

Heh, I used to work for a title search company–interesting what all you can find out online with a little know-how. Good job, Ali.

I still want to know what that noise is, though. It's clearly something natural to the house–the sound is present during the reveal playbacks, so as I said, it's likely not a sound effect. Fans, maybe? A laundry machine? Rain?

That said, even if they had central air, I'd go with your explanation for the footsteps–I hadn't thought to question that it wasn't a "house" proper.

The Doctor @ 9:02 pm

The switching between the "B reel" shots and the live shots are very annoying, especially when they are showing Tylers room.
… and just why is one of the dolls on the bed " blurred out" in some of the shots ?

During the review, we are shown Brit reviewing what appears to be the production shot of Kris and Amy as they are discussing the door shutting on it's own …
… BUT this does NOT match the "live" shot we are shown earlier ???
Where did this second version ( with the same audio dubbed in ) come from ?

It would take much less time for J&G to go down to the van and grab a Mini-DV to setup and monitor the stroller then it took for them to reposition the camera via the radio … not to mention they could have left the stroller in the same place where they supposedly heard it scrape on the wall.

The other investigative team members are obviously not informed of the importance of the stroller position as Brit and KJ are seen leaning against the bed right where the stroller would have been – Amy notices it moves and doesn't mention that this was where J&G put it and it was before you guys ( Brit ) went in there – so the question needs to be asked … just WHO was in the van helping J&G make sure the stroller was in the stationary camera shot when they repositioned it ?? Kris ?

May 3, 2010

JM @ 8:39 am

Minor correction…maybe. I've been informed by…._fairly_ trustworthy sources that the cameras used to document the position of the stroller don't in fact have zoom capability.

Not that it makes the whole mess any less suspicious, but does this jive? I really have no technical background with regard to the equipment they use….other than that they appear to still be using consumer grade machines when they can clearly (by now) more than afford the more reliable, and less-glitch prone laboratory grade models. But I digress..

HollyDolly @ 12:20 pm

Alicat,I assume from what your saying the place was once a home, that was big enough to convert into condos. That's not uncommon with older places, sometimes they get urned into two family dwellings or apartments if large enough. The footsteps as you said might be the neighbors, rather than some ghost, especially if the walls are thin, though not sure what the hissing noise could have been, when viewers heard the footsteps. If they don't have central air, maybe it was steam raditors, the old fashion kind.Mention is made of the horrible snows in Dec. to March,so I assume they must have either steam or oil heaters.maybe it was the heater making that sound.Cats also hiss, but no menion made of pets, so I think it might have been something mechanical in the house.
Again, GH has something happen, and barely any camera coverage. Viewers only get to see part of the stroller movement. In another episode at a historic home, Kris and Amy set up in the kitchen a camera and placed it so it would take shots of the doorway in which a little boy was seen. They left the room, and the camera took a photo of the moving of a garden fork and some chains .I think it was the one with the ghostly cat, which may not have been so ghostly.
If Grant and Jay had a report from the homeowner that the stroller moves, then do your evp work, and set up a camera to catch a full shot of the stroller. Then leave the room, and let nature take it's course. If it moves fine, you have it on tape.If not, then you've debunked that report. Why don't they have cameras with a zoom?If they did, then maybe they might catch the shadows they keep seeing, who knows.
Can't answer why they would blur some doll on a bed.Maybe the boy did make up the story of the ghosts, because he didn't like living there. So did they say the place was haunted? And if Kris wasn't in the van helping Gand J with the stationary camera shot, maybe it was a member of the production crew.

JM @ 4:16 am

I didn't mean to make that big a deal over the heating and cooling features of the home….I really just want to know what the hell that awful sound is during the footsteps event at this point. My OCD at work, really, as is my asking if their IR cams have a zoom function. It's irrelevent really.

My "source" here is more than a few GH cultists' response to my question on the TAPS forums….yeah, I decided to sign up just to see what the hell this infamous Skeptic Witch Hunt group is all about. At the very least, it's become a game of seeing if I can get myself banned via only polite, cuss-word devoid postings. I must report that the word "skeptic" is decidedly out of vogue over there; their word for us is "doubter". : )

Anyway, the thing not having a zoom function is a side note; cameras are still movable objects, and I can't see how they wouldn't be carrying at least one spare in their Ghostmobile Vans these days–it's not like they can't afford it. Hilariously I was asked what they apparently thought was rhetorical, skeptic stumping question after my criticism, "What would it take to convince you there was something paranormal at work?"

The ironic answer is….a full view of the stroller moving on its own. The camera's view of the stroller is very well lit (unlike say, a certain chair in a certain light house), so…I'd say they botched a golden opportunity to have produced skepticism-resistant evidence here.

And yet J and G seem…remarkably unregretful, and not particularly broken up about it.

This is why I credit Ghost Hunters with my conversion from a believer in the paranormal to a hardcore skeptic and nigh-atheist. The BS and coincidences just pile up, an eventually the camel's back breaks.

HollyDolly @ 11:07 am

That's okay JM.That's probably the first thing people were thinking of in regards to the hissing noise when hearing the footsteps. If it wasn't caused by heating ,plumbing, a pet boa constrictor or python, then what caused it?
Your right, they did botch it. They could have had a full view of the stroller, and caught this whole deal on video, and then wave it in everyone's face saying HAHA, you can't blame this on Grant.J and G get paid regardless, and that's why they weren't broken up about it, and anyone else would have gone and made sure they got a good shot of the thing moving.

Marti @ 4:50 pm

My biggest issue with this particular episode, besides the stroller shot, was the fact that with all the "noises" coming from Tyler's room, Grant sat ON THE FLOOR IN THE HALLWAY…. Why on earth didn't he just look in the room (preferably WITH a camera in hand)??

The Doctor @ 10:18 pm

"…I'd say they botched a golden opportunity to have produced skepticism-resistant evidence here."

I don't think that "skepticism-resistant" was a part of their goal … and they seem to have done very well at " producing evidence " – at least enough so their fans can say " look at this amazing evidence they captured ".

May 5, 2010

JM @ 4:55 am

Naturally. I was trying to be a bit sarcastic/ironic there.

The whole "skepticism" thing has been passe for Grant and Jason for quite a while now. It's like they're not even trying anymore.

Compare that to the admittedly controversial (and…arguably debunked) Race Rock Magic Chair episode. Jason was uneasy in calling it paranormal, and refused to call it the work of a ghost

What happened to this Jason Hawes? I miss that guy. He would insist on recreation attempts to rule out natural causes for phenomenon they recorded, he would play devil's(skeptic's) advocate ruthlessly in reaction to every bit of 'evidence'.

And…like all true love, one day it withered on the vine. And I can't say I blame him, in retrospect. Financial stability and being able to retire in one's mid 30s in exchange for simply looking the other way a time or two? I'd be lying if I said that that isn't a hard temptation to resist.

I'm still bitter towards the show, though. I remember when it first came out, I remember admiring the skepticism and resistance to sensationalization they displayed…and thus, the trust they built up over the course of the first season, leading up the Race Rock chair, which, I'll admit, had me literally jumping up and down in my living room in a joygasmic fit of wow. And, of course, in reality, it was their first step in a downward spiral of slowly selling off credibility in exchange for ratings, like some of unethical hedge fund company.

I find solace in the fact that the expected "Ghost Show Backlash" is already starting, as predicted by (I think) Logisti and others in one or two of their podcasts. Natgeo's American Paranormal and Paranatural, and Weird or What?….and Penn Gillete's Bullsh!t(despite the very, very, very large bone I have to pick with it regarding their global warming episode).

Wow, this ended up being four times longer than I intended….sorry folks.

May 6, 2010

JM @ 1:14 am

Ok, watching the newest episode…I think I've figured out the mystery sound.

They appear to be putting the EVP enhanced(or whatever) audio they normally save for later directly into the "live" investigation during post-production. It's plain old audio hiss.

Learjet @ 9:37 am

Excellent – stroller gate. Was getting boring without a bit of action. So I guess we have a couple of options here. Either a ghost moved it or it was a string pull. We know they are not above using string. Decisions decisions…

The EMF spikes could easily be natural. If they don't know what causes them, and they never do, they may as well not even bother. They simply don't have the skill to delve into that area.

May 7, 2010

The Doctor @ 2:02 pm

I looked up that new EMF meter they used here, and actually like it. The top line reads total EMF from all sources and the second line is a reading with 50/60 Hz filtered out. In every closeup we see the filtered total is zero.

Britt seems to be developing into a human paranormal detector –
First he feels sick, and decides that it must be paranormal activity or EMF – not the bad taco he ate or simple anxiety.

I wonder if he could explain his statement –
" mumble .. top of my head right now, like the energy changed "
The top of his head can read energy ?

Learjet @ 9:13 pm

You are correct Doctor. Had a look up the meter specs which shows all their EMF is coming from powerlines and zero from other sources. http://yfrog.com/2pdsp521nj

But you see, ghosts manipulate powerline EMF when they are present so we can't win.

JM @ 9:53 pm

Who needs a string? They could have moved the stroller by hand given that pants-crappingly awful camera angle.

I honestly wouldn't even give the stroller the high fallutin' suffix of 'gate'. I think it's more or less an indication that they just don't care anymore, and know their adoring public will swallow whatever they dish out.

What's funny is that Jason and Grant have scoffed at Paranormal State and (if I remember) Ghost Adventures as well…I'm seeing rapidly little reason for them to be high and mighty about themselves.

May 8, 2010

Zero @ 1:13 pm

I just saw this episode today and I don't really have anything to add to it except about the blurred out toys. It was probably just a commercial character, like a Micky Mouse toy or something, there were a few blurred out objects on a shelf in the girls room. It's not uncommon for shows to blur out a copyrighted character or logo instead of going through the hassle, and sometimes cost, of getting permission to use it, if they would even be allowed to in the first place. I'm sure Disney doesn't really want their characters to show up in GH.
