GH: Oakland Hall

This pre-civil-war home reputedly lodged General Sherman for at least a night. This plantation house is not only old, but it is beautiful and large as many such homes were. Ironically, with such an old home steeped in the tradition of the deep south one might be surprised to see tradition broken as Jay & Grant did not get the first activity of the night. In fact, instead of cutting straight to the dynamic duo the editors take us straight to Steve & Tango in the attic, where they (and we) hear an unidentifiable, animal-like sound. Of course, it's entirely possible (or even probable) there's a raccoon or possum in the attic, but hey — it startled them! Only ghosts and spiders are allowed to do that.

Elsewhere in the house, Jay & Grant were investigating claims that a television, when on, often turns off on it's own. While they were waiting to see what happened I noticed Grant had set the mini-DV camera down on an end-table in the background of the camera shot — right next to a K-II meter; and the K-II meter was going off like crazy without comment from either Ghost Hunter. I thought this was interesting, even if not entirely unguessable: apparently common handheld electronic equipment can set off the K-II meters. We already knew (thanks to a shot of Joe Chin talking on his walkie Pilgrim included in one of the episodes last season) that the walkie-talkies used by TAPS will set the K-II off every time someone nearby hits the talk key, and now it would seem another commonly seen handheld item TAPS uses can achieve similar affects.

The television actually did go off, but after some quick troubleshooting Jay realized that the extension cord the TV was plugged into had been pulled out of the wall socket. He acknowledged this was not necessarily paranormal but he or Grant could have knocked it out without realizing it while walking around the room. The truly bizarre part is that afterwards Jay decided that "60% of the claims going on here all fall under an electrical problem that's going on" and decided to call in an electrician. Now, granted we only saw about 10 minutes of them actually investigating at the house but nothing that aired — including the bit where the television went off without warning — suggested anything of the sort. If other stuff went on that led them to this conclusion it would have been nice to include it in the episode — especially since they devoted 2/3 of this episode to an investigation where literally nothing at all interesting happened. Perhaps they could have cut the Buffalo Bill museum down a bit and given Oakland Hall another ten minutes of air time to better show us how exactly our intrepid investigators are drawing their conclusions.

During the Reveal they mentioned some bulbs blowing out and that the electrician had noted some of the power cords had either arced or were otherwise potentially unsafe, so it would seem our boys reached the right conclusion. My gripe with this investigation lies primarily with the post-production team at  Pilgrim Films cutting this down and adding too much unnecessary filler to the previous investigation. That's most likely because they wanted to show off Eddie McClintock being on the show, which is understandable, but there was still not enough Eddie and too much Boring to cut Oakland Hall down to 20  minutes including the walkthrough and Reveal (and commercials).

There was one piece of audio evidence captured as well. Steve reacted to something saying, "What is that?" and immediately afterward there is the sound very much like a voice seeming to answer "It's……" followed by a number of unintelligible syllables. My money is on "Monty Python's Flying Circus" but who knows. In all seriousness, it does sound like a human voice saying something and it's definitely not Steve (and probably not Tango either).

All in all, this was an interesting investigation and deserved more air time.

MissBlue @ 5:34 pm

This has nothing to do with TAPS, but I thought it was so funny that the woman showing Jason, Grant, and Steve around her property said that the house was "pre-Civil War" or "antebellum, as we call it in the South." That cracked me up. We call it antebellum in the rest of the country, too! :)

Learjet @ 7:26 pm

That noise in the attic that could have been an animal, why didn't they bring in the thermal camera to check on that?

alicat @ 7:34 pm

Ummm…. Learjet…. remember Steve's reaction when he started hitting the framework in the last attic episode? Somewhat akin to his reaction to bats and spiders. I'm guessing it really wasn't inside but outside. I'd have to check the surroundings again but it could have been anything on the roof including a branch.

The Doctor @ 8:58 pm

Hris says they were called in as the occupants were "terrified and desperate for answers".

Curious then that the woman listed as a tenant who showed them around is the Marketing and Event coordinator for Georgia Ghost Hunters.

alicat @ 9:19 pm

I also did some research on this location. Unless there is more than one Oakland Hall Plantation in Eatonton, GA, it's interesting that this is how it is listed:

"Name: Oakland Hall Plantation
City: Eatonton, GA
Phone/Postal-Address: See Oakland Hall Plantation detailpage for phone number
Oakland Hall Plantation is located in these categories:
Doctors & Clinics, Day Spas, Salons, Rehabilitation Services"

While there may be "tenants", I don't even remember any of this being discussed either.

TonyaW @ 9:21 pm

Hey everyone I would like to clairfy a few things:

1.) I am not from the South but from up North. I personally had never heard of the term antebellum before moving here several months ago. I was not aware that its a term used other places as when I described my house to my friends and family back home several asked what antebellum was; that's why I stated what I did.

2.) I did not call them they called me. I am not terrified, scared, desperate or other wise…..matter of fact my friends and I got a good laugh out that comment. They edited alot out but one the biggest 'complaints' I had was hearing footsteps on the 2nd floor landing going down the stairs.

3.) Yes I am listed as a 'member' but I do not pay dues, nor do I go on any investigations or evidence reviews. They asked me to help out with a few things since its stuff that I do for a living and I gladly accepted. Pilgrim Films was well aware of this since they located my house thourgh GGHs website.

Seriously if anyone has any questions about what they did or why they were here or how it works please feel free to ask. I don't mind having civil discussions about this as I know everyone has a different belief system when it comes to this stuff.

Tonya

alicat @ 9:25 pm

Hello Tonya,

Can you address the description I found of the Oakland Hall Plantation I posted just before you addressed the GH issues. I'm a bit confused about that. Thanks.

TonyaW @ 9:38 pm

Hi Alicat!!

The owner was previously doing physical therapy and hippotherapy (NOTE: hippotherapy is a form of therapy using horses for children who are mentally or physically handicapped) at some point when the yellowpages ad was placed it was called Oakland Hall Health and Physical Wellness Spa.

We still do some PT out here from time to time for certain clients (these clients are older and do not like to drive over the next city for their PT and want to be home before their soaps come on) and while pilgrim films knew of this, we asked not to have it mentioned because we didn't want it out there that we still see a few people coming and have people thinking that we were open for business and try to start coming out here. The PTA is here 2 days a week for 2 hours (if that) and once those people stop coming we are done with PT here.

alicat @ 10:05 pm

Hi Tonya and welcome. I am aware of the horse therapy having a family member who has worked in that field with her own horses. It's a wonderful experience to see the results from this type of therapy for children and their parents alike.

Can't blame you for not wanting the publicity about the PT and I'm glad to see they honored your wishes.

Don't worry about using the term antebellum. Like your family, living up "North" it's not really a term used around here either. We tend to refer to most things here as pre-Civil war.

Can you tell me how your found this site? You also said Pilgrim contacted you through the GGH site. Do you know if GGH ever solicited Pilgrim prior to your arrival on the scene? When did they film and how long were they on site?

I'll leave you with those questions for now. I don't want to overwhelm you on your initial visit. I'm sure others will have questions and will be glad to be able to ask you directly about your experiences.

Thanks again for stopping by.

TonyaW @ 10:30 pm

Thanks for the Welcome Alicat :)

Yes Hippotherapy is soooo rewarding. We had to close our program for a bit as funding is very expensive but we are looking to get it up and running again shortly with the help of some possible grants or through people donating their time. (if someone has insurance we will bill that but if they don't we see them pro-bono which is what most of our cases our)

Pilgrim Films was actually very respectful of my wishes. I had requested that no tape be used on the floors as they are very old and I didn't want the finish coming up so they tucked all the cords and wrapped them.

Ha Ha Ha I am glad I am not the only one who doesn't use the term antebellum. I felt like an idiot there for a second :)

A friend advised me of this site and told me about the thread so I thought I would check it out.

Yes Pilgrim films located my house through GGHs website. GGH did not contact or solicit Pilgrim Films in any way shape or form. How it started is Pilgrim contacted them about the possibility of filming a new show that involves ghost hunters, mediums and homeowners (it is suppose to be on TLC when and if it does air). While we (me and the home owner) were debating this offer the filming schedule for said show changed and they were no longer going to be in my area so the producer for that show passed my info along to the producer for Ghost Hunters. When they first called and identified themselves I hung up. I was like yea right Ghost Hunters is contacting ME–ha-ha-ha. But he called back and I listend. They filmed the first week of Sept and were here Monday through Thursday afternoon. Jason and Grant were only onsite for the investigation and the reveal. The rest of the time when they were filming here it was what is called the B crew–that is the crew that gets the shots of the exterior and interior. The crew actually took a liking to the horses and the deer we have running around here.

Oh yea, I hope they do. I like sharing my experinces and listening to what everyone here has to ask and or say. I am not here to try to convert non-believers into belivers but to share point of views.

alicat @ 10:46 pm

Thanks Tonya. You were way ahead of them with the tape on the floor request. There seemed to be a problem reported about residue at another site earlier this season. I'm happy that they respected your requests.

I can understand your hanging up the phone when you received that initial call. I don't think I'd believe someone calling me and making that pronouncement myself. :-)

Interesting that Pilgrim has a similar show in production for TLC. I know they do work for TLC but hadn't heard any pre-production buzz about it. Will have to check it out. You've got to hand it to Pilgrim. They certainly are cranking these low cost reality shows out.

Thanks for the heads up and quick responses and good luck with the funding. Grant funding is a tough business.

The Doctor @ 10:59 pm

Hi Tonya, and welcome –

How did they handle it the night of the filming –
Were you able to hang around and watch or did they chase you off site for the night ?

TonyaW @ 11:12 pm

Alicat-I heard about the floor issue from another friend of mine and when she told me that I told Pilgrim ASAP no tape. From my understanding some of the tape they have can be pretty brutal.

The working title for that show was called "MEDIUM(s)" but due to another show on primetime with the same name there were going to change the name to avoid confusion. I am not sure what they changed it to or when it will air.

Grants are tough. I would rather set my hair on fire at this point…lol!!

Doctor-Thanks for the welcome :)

On the night Jason and Grant were here I was able to stay until about 10:30'ish. They got to my house about 5'ish. We did the tour which took about 2 hours to film (yea I had issues and kept goofing up not to mention the house is 7000 sq feet)they did some filming of the TAPS members out by the horses and in front of the house and then we broke for dinner. Then we filmed a bit more of us dicussing the investigation and then saying our goodbyes. (which they didn't use)

Pilgrim films put me up in a nice hotel nearby so it wasn't so bad being away from home for 2 nights.

blinddog50 @ 8:32 am

@alicat and others,
Ms. cat, the definition of the word antebellum in and around my locale is: pre-War of Northern Aggression.
Basically built before 1847.
There was a period between 1847 and the said War of Northern Aggression that could at best be called Antebellum Nouveau. A description that could be termed as 'plantation doublewide'.
These people however were frowned upon by the real Southern Aristocracy as the men continually walked around acting like they didn't give a damn and the women had a tendency to make their formal wear out of window curtains.

I do hope that this helps clear the air as to the antebellum lifestyle.

Best Wishes,
Colonel Beauregard T. Blinddog50, Esq.

alicat @ 9:04 am

Dear Colonel Beauregard T. Blinddog50, Esq.:

My, my, thank you kind sir for your most eloquent response. (I think I have the vapors! *batting eyes and fanning rapidly*.) You must understand sir that I am but a young woman from the wilds of "South Jersey" so my knowledge of the lifestyle of the rich and famous of the Southern Aristocracy is somewhat out of my realm of knowledge and experience. I am so pleased that such a wise and obviously well travelled man such as yourself would take the time to explain all this information to little old me, your faithful fan. :-)

Most humbly yours, Miss Scarlett Leigh Alicat, Dressmaker Extraordinaire*
(*Green velvet dresses, hardware included)

Okay BD. In other words, what the heck took you so long?! I was sure you'd be right there the minute I hit reply. ;-)

The Doctor @ 12:11 pm

Hi Tonya -

Had they already done their equipment setup before the dinner break ?

When you left ( ~10:30 ), were they already in the process of investigating ?

When you came back from dinner break and filmed more introduction, did it seem like they were simply reshooting parts or covering new ground ?

TonyaW @ 12:43 pm

Hi Doctor~

1.) To be honest I don't remember; but I am pretty sure they did. I know the garage had the equipment set up and I do recall seeing the infared cameras that are on the stands sitting out. (I am finding as I get older my memory tends to fail from time to time…LOL!!)

2.) They were getting ready to go lights out at that point. They had to wait for my car to go by so my headlights didn't cast any shawdows/lights.

3.) It was the part where the home owner and TAPS parts ways before they go lights out. I had to reshoot a few times because I kept missing my mark. I am pretty sure that was all we filmed at that point. I sucked so it took us forever to get though it.

hee-hee-hee I think I know what you're getting at or digging for :)
would it have to do with time marks?

The Doctor @ 1:56 pm

Nope :-)

I was wondering if they did the initial intro, then during the dinner break the producers would have a chance to go through and "block out" the show, and perhaps adjust the intro to fit more of what they expect might turn up something interesting during the investigation.

I got a chuckle out of Jason saying " we really hit this place hard " – they didn't go lights out until after you left about 10:30 PM and it seems like they knocked off about 2 AM – a whopping 3 1/2 hours to have 3 independant teams going through all areas of this 7000 sq ft. house ?

Wonder why they didn't task Techmangler Steve with looking into the TV problem ?

StanTheMan @ 1:59 pm

The Doctor – they didn't want to burn the place down!

The Doctor @ 2:18 pm

I just noticed also that Grants KII is going nuts when he is standing their with his arms crossed after turning on the A/C.

Tonya – is there anything in that area that would cause that ?
