DT: Destination Truth Reviews Anyone?

I love Destination Truth but as everyone has no doubt noticed, I can barely find the time to write up Ghost Hunters episodes. If someone would like to write up Destination Truth this season, by all means PM me in the forums.  I think everyone would love to read and discuss Josh Gates' investigations, as well as how awesome he is in general.

Comments on DT: Destination Truth Reviews Anyone?

I LOVED this latest episode. I totally got chills down my spine. I can't say how scientific it was and I could care less about the equipment they use, but for entertainment value i would take Josh over the GH boys anyday. I would totally read it if someone would write up this show, thanx!

Cheryl-I submitted a review yesterday for approval. Yes, it was an exciting show and IMO this episode left any other similar reality show's (think GH) season openers in the dust.

Cheryl H @ 1:34 pm

I agree. I'm really quite sick of boths GH's. This episode of DT and the one in the haunted forest in japan were superior. And what makes it even better is that they don't try to force a scare on you with the stupid spooky music. Looking forward to your review.

The Suicide Forest was one of the most chilling episodes of any reality type show I have ever seen. There is something going on there, regardless whether one believes in the paranormal or not. Perhaps there is something there that effects people psychologically.

The season opener of DT, IMO, left those of GH and GHI in the dust. There is no way the latter shows can pack the thrills and adventure that are the hallmarks of DT. It is unique, and Josh is certainly much more interesting than Jason and Grant can ever hope to be; again, just my opinion.

Drache Frau @ 8:30 pm

I'm ashamed to say that I had to miss it. It sounds very exciting.

georghale @ 9:03 pm

You can watch the episode online at Syfy.com.

These people do paranormal hunting so much better than the GH clowns. It's ironic: that Josh doesn't take himself very seriously yet his investigations, when they get results, ARE more serious but you get the GH duo taking themselves very seriously yet their results are unintentionally funny due to forced (read: stretched, faked, k2 meter) results.

It was too bad that the network wanted crossover interaction between the shows. The Destination people were doing fine until they went to TAPS to have their results reviewed. Was it my imagination reading something into Grant and Jason's demeanors when presented with real results? A number of Grant's and Jason's comments were funny in that they held Josh to a higher standard than they practice with their show and their own "results." Some of Grant's and Jason's comments debunking Destination's results sounded like they were not watching the same video I was.

OK.. What am I missing with DT?
Granted, I have only seen 2 episodes: one (I think) near the beginning of the show where they looked for a mermaid, and this last episode. Both to me seemed SO SILLY! The things they investigate seem so out there (I mean, who over the age of 6 actually believes in mermaids?), and so NON-scientific.
What initially drew me to GH was the fact that they SEEMED in it to debunk and explain many things seen as paranormal (although they have fallen further and further from this and have also gotten silly). In my admitted limitied exposure to DT, it seems so silly and trivial. Because of the respose by skeptics I have seen on this site, I will add it to my DVR list and give it another try…but have I only caught bad episodes or am I missing something?

bill kelly @ 10:42 pm

i kinda wish they didnt do the 2nd part. the suicide forest was awesome and could have been a whole hour. best DT ever

Fendergirl,

I don't know if you are missing anything. Most of DT's expeditions do seem silly but that is part of their appeal to me. They try to search for things which are automatically relegated to fairy tale status by most people. Josh has a sense of humor and has made some cynically funny commentary when narrating some of the episodes. While his attitude may be lighthearted, they seem to do everything in practice in the actual expedition in the event they do actually find something. To me, that makes it all the more of a "WHOA" moment when they come across evidence like the yeti footprint and their creepy forest visits.

My first regret with the Romanian creepy forest is that I would have liked them to spend one more day and night investigating it. A daytime exploring the places where they were they seeing the lights and general forest conditions to rule out other campers then another night time to see if any of the results from the previous night would repeat.

It's all a matter of taste. To me it is as important to be entertained by the host of these shows as what they find. So when Josh goes out chasing a giant electric worm or an escaped flying monkey from oz, he is at least out there and looking for something. He is a ham and yet seriously seeking so he makes it interesting. And you are seeing other lands and cultures in obscure places. And it is very interesting to me to see their attitudes about these things he searches for and how very seriously they take it. It's even interesting to see some of the misadventures he has in getting to some of these remote places, (like the top of his airplane ride being ripped off.) But if you still find GH that interesting and you thought this last haunted forest episode wasn't interesting then don't bother – this show is not for you. This is as good as it gets. And of course this is just my opinion.

alicat @ 11:13 am

fendergrl,

I agree, it is a matter of taste. But I have to ask, haven't you, at one point in your life, even if it what you heard or read and considered was an outlandish story, shook your head and wondered what if? You're certainly not going to go out and explore the "what if" but how much fun is it to see someone else take it to the next step and actually try to determine if that "what if" story could be possible? To me, that's DT and Josh has the exact personality to bring those "what if" stories to life. In a very brief time you are told the history, the quest and the evidence or lack thereof. And, as a bonus, you get someone who doesn't take himself so seriously or declare himself an expert. What you do get is someone who takes you along for the trials and tribulations of the "search" and even has the evidence reviewed by others and not a cast member. I agree we don't see a lot of heavy detail on the show which we would like and yes, I'll agree I'm skeptical of the paranormal individuals who examine their evidence (especially J & G). But this show has always been a breath of fresh air and the total opposite of GH which, although the "investigations" are new, to me the show has become old and stagnant. So I say enjoy the humor, the trip and the findings. You might just see something you've never seen before and, for me at least, that's why I watch.

Nosfer @ 11:36 am

In addition, both ghosts and the other creatures (mermaids, if you will) are in the line of fairy tale since we don't know for sure. So I find nothing childish or unbelievable about going after any of the things on DT any more so than watching J&G go around trying to find ghosts. DT has debunked or "not claimed" far more than GH lately.

Cheryl H @ 3:29 pm

Also, haven't you wondered many times if some of these fantasy creatures have SOME sort of basis in science? It is said that the first rumors of mermaids came when very superstitious overly imaginative sailors first saw the manatee. I don't see it myself, Manatees make for some butt ugly mermaids. But the point is someone somewhere had the thought that maybe the mermaid had some basis in reality. So maybe the DT people are thinking Josh probably isn't going to find what he is looking for, but he might find some interesting proof of real animals that might have been mistaken for the fantasy ones. It is interesting to me to see how oral legends get built and grow based on hearsay, but also how many times they are based (perhaps loosely) on the truth.

I'm thinking they're based on hallucinogens.

Nosfer @ 4:27 pm

"I'm thinking they're based on hallucinogens. "

Do you have any examples of this other than the Oracle of Delphi? A folktale with a possible very real (non-hallucinogenic) source: Homo floresiensis

Leslie @ 6:21 pm

Nosfer-
Not off of the top of my head, no. But I will dig around my old anthro. stuff when I get the chance. I was thinking more in terms of humankind's 'love affair' with drugs. In my anthro. classes we used to talk about this a lot- there are many cultures (past and current) that use hallucinogens and other drugs, and when you think about that combined with these unexplainable or 'fantasy' creatures that have been observed, an easy and almost common sense explanation can be the drugs. Unless, of course, these 'fantasy' creatures are real. (Imagine if mermaids truly did/do exist!)

Nosfer @ 8:28 pm

Leslie, I can't really either, though I know the practice of "toking up" was certainly done, as well as fasting etc. However, probably not as common in their everyday life, more in ceremonies or special circumstances. Mermaids, well, I guess a lot depends upon how long the sailors were at sea! A full on shot of a manatee is one thing, but if you catch parts here and there gliding in the water, I don't know. I think some may be attributable to being in an altered state, but certainly not all of them can be.

When you look at cases like floresiensis though, you have what was seemingly a folktale possibly being explained through actual remains.

I love watching DT,and I tought that the one filmed in the Romanian forest was awesome.Everytime I watch this show I find myself wanting to be there with them the fact that Josh is a "Hottie!" has very little to do with it (LOL!)I envy them getting to travel the world and experience things that I know I never will.I think the concept of the series is unique and it is so much more interesting than GH is.I look forward to watching it every week.

The following link has the best explanation of this show and why it is worth watching simply to pass time that you really don't care about, because it was never meant to be taken seriously.
