GH: Brentsville Historic Centre
The Brentsville Historic Centre consists of several buildings dating back to the 19th century, largely preserved or restored to period. If you live anywhere on the east coast of the US, you've probably got a place similar to it somewhere nearby. Maybe your parents took you there when you were a kid and you hated it, but now that you've got kids you drag them there because you've grown to appreciate the history. No? Maybe it's just me then. In any case, picture Tombstone, Arizona without the O.K. Corral and in fact just replace all the gunslinger history with something too dull to capture the imagination of children. That's basically where this investigation took place.
Right at the start Jay & Grant caught something odd on thermal. It seemed to show an outline of a head and shoulders, but the truly odd part was that this image was stationary even as the camera moved. It seemed almost as if the image was somehow burned into the camera, as it was constantly visible no matter where the camera was pointed. Steve suggested it might somehow be a reflection of Jason but upon further examination — overlaying shots of Jason with the thermal footage — he and Tango seemed to agree the evidence didn't seem to support that explanation. Ultimately, the matter was left unanswered. The only possible explanation I could think of that wasn't explored is condensation or oil from someone's fingers on the lens of the FLIR unit.
In one building Jay & Grant heard some fairly regular sounds they at one point described as footsteps. Jason found an crawlspace entrance to the attic in the ceiling and determined the sounds were coming from up there. Grant looked up there with the thermal camera but didn't see anything, so this matter remained open as well. Was it the wind? A well-hidden rat? A ghost? Unknown.
The only remaining incident which caught my attention was when Steve & Tango were investigating one of the buildings they both (or was it just Steve?) reported a ringing in their ears. Supposedly the ringing immediately stopped when they moved into another room, then came back if they re-entered the room where a man was known to have been shot. Steve hypothesized the ringing might be part of the final moments of the man's life (I guess he was shot in the head but didn't die right away?) In any case, it was mildly interesting but virtually meaningless without something more. It was also followed by Steve freaking out upon noticing a "yellowjacket". I'm not positive, but I think it was actually a paper wasp.
This investigation was a twenty-minuter, so there wasn't much to it. The evidence review and Reveal both seemed rushed, but then again it may have been a choice between "rushed" and "boring". It was a fairly good investigation, as it combined some interesting moments with a complete lack of staged paranormal events. Kudos.

Gonsalves Syndrome, the paranormal Swine Flu.
Only two reports of visual sightings and Kris mixes them up.
I'm beginning to believe we need to have some type of telethon for these people.
dr_peter_venkman @ 5:54 am
I almost spit coffee through my nose while reading your telethon idea.
Nosfer @ 5:54 pm
One of these times we will be surprised, one of these times the anti-christ himself will rise up from the floor and fling Steve across the room, but in the meantime, we're stuck with insects and arachnids.
When was this shooting supposed to have taken place?
alicat @ 6:26 pm
Nosfer,
Here's a link with information regarding the jail and it's timeline. To answer your question about the shooting, contrary to Kris Williams claims that "Robert Clark" was shot, it was actually JAMES Clark who was shot at the jail.

And, apparently this is another one of those help us out "restoration" investigations. In other words, they have been selling tickets for ghost tours to further their funding starting in 2008.

Ah, 1872…I was amused to watch Steve's gang-style shooting
alicat @ 7:29 pm
BD50 – very funny! However, this episode was not. It was absolutely brutal to watch.
Kris' claims were full bodied apparitions, Agnes who was hanged for murdering her master, the ghost of "Robert" Clark who was imprisoned and accused of trying to abduct a woman, cool breezes of air through the building for no reason, objects moving and everyone thinks all this is related to the 13 people who were executed on the grounds.
Now, compare that to Rob Morrison, the Site Manager who claims there have been stories circulating for @ 50-60 years. His claims were a man’s face or an outline of a face in the lower pane of the Judge's office window in the Courthouse. In the old jail, he claims there have been stories of an angry mail voice yelling at women, etc. in the cell where JAMES Clark was shot. On the second floor it is claimed people "saw premonitions in the window". Huh? Really…. premonitions? I didn't know you could see premonitions.
Then two witnesses tell their tales. A gentleman says he saw the face a woman in the doorway but the doorway to the courthouse only has windows at the very top and the doorway to the jail is shuttered. My favorite was when they were on the 2nd floor of the jail; they then cut to an eyewitness, Georgia Meadoous, claiming she peered into the window @ 8:30 at night and saw a grey blob which moved into the hallway. First, the doors and windows were shuttered on the jail's 2 floors so I'm not exactly sure how she saw anything, let alone saw a grey blob as she was peeking into the window (on the 2nd floor no less) at 8:30 at night in the dark. How did she even know it was a hallway and not another room?
But of course, we have to go to the investigation where Kris now tells Amy while they were in the Judge's office that someone saw an African American woman's face looking out the window. Then she starts and EVP session saying that people are seeing male and female faces in the window. Again Kris, huh?
Then we have the Steve and Tango show. However, I noticed one thing unusual here. Upon approaching the jail, the top window shutters were now off the windows as well as the bottom right hand window. I have to wonder why as they were not off the windows during Jason & Grant's investigation or at any other time during the show. However, I believe Steve thinks he was actually there when James Clark was shot as he acted out the entire shooting for Tango. Amazing. I do have to give him credit though. He did listen to the Site Manager and not Kris and referred to him as James Clark. However, he once again embellished his story by recreating the shooting and telling Tango that James Clark kidnapped Fanny and her brother was so outraged he came into the jail and shot Clark. After this explanation he claimed he had a loud ringing in his ears to which Tango offered the "theory" and the two discussed could have been the last sounds of the gunfire Clark heard. Please! Interestingly enough, at the Reveal J&G claimed Steve only felt the ringing in his ears in that room.
Jason and Grant’s investigation – boring and worthless.
As I said above, the Historic Centre is under renovations and they did send out PR on the show. What a shame. It was a big dud.
The Doctor @ 5:44 pm
During the analysis we see a further attempt to rehabilitate the Techmangler.
Steve comes up with the idea that the strange image on the FLIR may be Jason's reflection off the house, completely ignoring the fact that the shape remains absolutely stationary in the recording.
Regardless of the distance to the reflecting medium, it's angle or it's composition – grass, brick, wood, glass or thin air, our expert Techmangler does not think the "reflection" should change.
The FLIR freezes, and the "reflection" disappears.
Steve uses the production video and some fancy editing attempting to prove his point, but Tango to his credit remains dubious.
Does our Techmangler have the expertise or his equipment even have the capability to do the compositing of the shots? They make the scene appear as if they do, but I am highly skeptical.
At this point we have two possibilites.
1) There was a glitch in the camera, so call the manufacturer, possibly send him a copy of the recording and send the camera in for inspection/repair or …
2) Casper has injected himself into the FLIR and onto the recording.
J&G go with choice #2, showing it as part of the "evidence" they reveal to the client – including only the " we don't know what to make of it "
How about you actually find out what to make of it before you use that piece of equipment again ?
dconlly @ 6:18 pm
The Doctor,
I think you are forgetting the GH Scientific method. Throw out any scientific explanation that could debunk ghost, and go automatically with the bizarre and crazy explanation. In this capacity, the Techmangler does his job on que, and with perfection, and for some icing on the cake he is even to scream at least once during each episode in regards to bugs.
The Doctor @ 12:26 pm
… Just something that's been buging me …
They get a tour of the place beforehand, and they see the open hole leading up to the attic. With umpteen years experience between them, do you suspect they just might have had a thought of how they were going to look up there ?
How about having a tripod handy that you could attach the FLIR or a mini-dv to and poke it up there for a look around ?
Back in the early days when they still had some air of legitimacy they even used a roto-rooter "sewer-cam" to see into a tight spot. I suppose that's just too much trouble now.
Nosfer @ 12:35 pm
roto-rooter "sewer cam"? See discussion about headcams LOL Well, the improvisation goes right well hand in hand with the fact that these are not organized investigations. So, when Jason just happens to have brought some flour along, I tend to get really suspicous!
Funny how, of the times that Grant has been hoisted or has crawled up into ceilings and attics, the only time he got "hurt" was the Moss Beach episode. Co-inkeydink?
alicat @ 12:50 pm
@ The Doctor – First, I think one of the main problems was they seemed very disinterested in this place. I think it was a "throw away" or just a "filler" investigation. I haven't been in jails of that age but would they really have an attic?
BD50, I know you've toured some places from that era, any ideas on that?
Second, with all the equipment they have, Steve has only 3 cameras set up with only one in the old jail yet this is supposedly the most active spot? I don't get it. Just as they are finishing the set up and before Steve shows the camera angles, Kris, who is in the jail, asks "so we still need a camera for the stairs?" to which Tango replies "yes" and then Kris says "and that's it?". Before the set up they show the computer screen which looks like there was 4 cameras being set up. There could be a very simple explanation but I still wonder… what happened to that camera?
The Doctor @ 1:36 pm
Not sure just how they would make the decision on if it was a "filler" before they finish the investigation, after all, they could wind up with their first full-bodied 3D apparation dance the fandango with Kris on camera.
As far as the cameras go I agree – the Destination Truth people can backpack like 9 cameras off into the wild jungle, and Steve gets a whopping 3 hooked up ? If they have extra cameras they should be setting them up for multiple angles on the same areas.
The "missing camera" is happening a lot, and I can't figure out any reason for it.*
I noticed in this case the first two camera angles change from the initial 4 shot, shown while Grant is whining about how hard it is to get anything visual. ( or I suppose capturing the same sound others have heard versus how easy it is to get EVP's that no one has ever heard )
* In an early episode down south, I'm pretty sure the missing camera would have shown what really happened to Jay's Missing filp-flop.
Nosfer @ 1:43 pm
From The Doctor: "Not sure just how they would make the decision on if it was a "filler" before they finish the investigation"
Well, pretty easy I'd say when these things are scripted from the word "Go" I'm sure they know even before they "roll away from headquarters" how the episode is going to turn out. Factor in the chances of them being able to actually catch something probably amounting to somewhere in the 0.0000563% area, and it's probably a sure bet.
Nosfer @ 1:54 pm
I was going to add: "Especially with a commercial location" but the clock beat me. Even though nothing was found here, they were able to leave the door open and leave an air of uncertainty that at least did not hurt the economic condition of the Centre…BTW, after more than two hundred years, can't they switch the "r" and "e" around finally?
Nosfer @ 5:49 pm
Does anyone know how/why Steve and Tango picked that particular frame of Jason that they did to compare to the "burned in" image? Just because one particular frame doesn't match….
blinddog50 @ 6:46 pm
http://www.gainesville-times.com/news/2009/aug/17/brentsville-featured-ghost-hunters/
Apparently the local paper found as much as J&G.
alicat @ 6:51 pm
Nosfer,
There was nothing mentioned as to why Steve made that frame choice. In the jail there is a standup shot of Jason saying he initially got a thermal hit "which was very much the shape of a person". Then he says they really don't know what to make of it and they'll have to analyze it later. When Steve and Tango are doing their analysis, you see them start and then you are given to believe it's awhile later when Steve says to Tango he wants to take a look at the thermal on the larger screen so he can "figure out what this is". Tango at first doesn't even see the image but when shown says it doesn't look like Jason to him at all when Steve uses that thermal frame and syncs it up with the production footage for comparison but Steve isn't totally convinced it's not Jason and says "I don't know" maybe it isn't and then "it still leaves us with the what is it, what is it? I'm beginning to believe GH inspired the tag line "Imagine Greater".
Nosfer @ 7:01 pm
From Blinddogs link I see they are now "Trans Atlantic Paranormal Society" instead of "The…."
@Alicat…Given how often they use Pilgrim's footage (even in Reveal scenes now), I think the Pilgrim Cameramen should qualify as at least Investigators-In-Training!
blinddog50 @ 9:10 pm
Nos, you got something from that link?
All I ever got was a blank.
I think I've got something else pretending to be something else in my computer.
ali, I'll get to my 'jail' experiences as soon as I can.
Had an emergency training net tonight and got tied up.
StanTheMan @ 11:59 am
BD50 – I too only get a blank where the article should be when I use the link. However I can read it by using the "Printer-Friendly" option.
