GA: Northern NJ Asylum – Preview

Ben from the Travel Channel has been persistently filling out the Contact form every week to let me (and I'm sure every other paranormal site's administrator) know about the upcoming Ghost Adventures episode.  He's been including an episode preview too, which is cool in the sense that you get to watch a commercial from the Travel Channel without having to sit through any of their programming.  I kid.  I'm a big fan of the World Poker Tour and highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest but suspects watching Poker would be like watching Golf.  Nay, it's much more fun and — I hate to say it — but some people might find it has more action than a typical Baseball game.

…but I digress.  I don't have time to do write-ups of each week's Ghost Adventures episode, but I really want to include them on this site because I like their style and I know a lot of you guys watch regularly, so what I'll be doing is just creating a post with the video preview each week and that will give everyone a sneak preview of the upcoming episode (for those who don't watch World Poker Tour) and give everyone a place to discuss the episode once it's aired.

So without further ado, Ghost Adventures: Northern New Jersey Asylum:

If anyone is interested in actually doing a writeup for Ghost Adventures (as I do for Ghost Hunters investigations) let me know via the Contact form or PM in the forums.  I definitely want to be featuring any show writeups in the main section of the site so they don't get buried in the forums. That includes old Ghost Hunters episodes, for those of you with the DVD's :)

could someone please tell me what day of the week this show comes on I always mess it but dying to catch a episode?

Logisti @ 5:41 pm

It's Fridays 9pm ET on the Travel Channel.

Raphael @ 8:55 pm

Occams Razor would suggest that a dead person as the source of the EVP would be the one theory that required the most assumptions and therefore had the least probability of being true – its a hoax

windwhisperer @ 10:16 pm

Glad you're doing something a little special for GA. I enjoy watching this show. Love their methods. Okay, the lockdown is a bit corny but that just lends to the ghost story atmosphere. But if I think about it, I don't think I'd want to be locked in somehwere that was supposedly haunted. Can't wait for the next episode.

Appreciate it Logisti. if you lot say this show is worth checking out then it's worth my time too.

windwhisperer @ 11:59 am

Does anybody know where in northern NJ this asylum is located?

Oubliette @ 12:18 pm

I am racking my brain trying to figure out which one this could be, since I live in NJ.

I know that Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital was closed in the nineties. At the time I was working at Ancora, its South Jersey counterpart and some employees from there elected to be transferred to Ancora rather then lose their seniority and pensions.

Marlboro was built in a beautiful Tudor style and from a web search I just did, is supposed to be haunted (aren't they all?).

I can understand them using a generic name to ward off legions of people who would feel the urge to go and pay the grounds a visit. Just need a bit more information and maybe some video of the outside of the building, but this to me would be the best candidate I can think of. Keep in mind that I am only familiar with state-run facilities, so I could be way off the mark.

Brenny @ 12:28 pm

I nominate Obliette to review the Ghost Adventures series. She did a great job on an earlier episode! So, how about it Obliette…will be watching tonight!

CrowTRobot @ 12:35 pm

Seconded

windwhisperer @ 1:01 pm

Agreed. Obliette did such a good job on the last one. What do you say?

Anyway, why aren't they telling us the name of the asylum? Could it be that the owners don't want a bunch of amateur ghost hunters running around in there?

Logisti @ 2:04 pm

You guys are going to get more than you bargained for :)

Harry contacted me just about the minute this post went up and asked to write GA for the site, and after seeing you guys "voting" her into the task, Oubliette just contacted me about writing up GA as well.

Double Trouble!

It looks like you guys might have TWO GA write-ups coming at you over the next few days. I'm not sure how best to handle this Abundance of Awesomeness!

Harry is going to be the "main" writer for Ghost Adventures and Oubliette noticed we sorely lack *ANY* Destination Truth write-ups, so that job is hers if she is open to it, but since GA is getting a lot of folks excited — and due to popular demand — I've given Oubliette the go-ahead to write-up this week's GA as well.

I am concerned about keeping the discussion focused though, so we won't be having two posts (three including this one!) for the same episode like this every week. We just got two new Contributing Editors this week though, and I want them both to be able to show their stuff and have a little fun so everybody break out some digital applause for Harry & Oubliette!

windwhisperer @ 2:24 pm

YAY for Harry and Oubliette! Congratulations. I know they'll do a bang-up job.

Brenny @ 2:26 pm

Way to go guys! I am looking forward to reading your reviews.

CrowTRobot @ 3:13 pm

Congrats Oubliette and Harry. Looking forward to it.

Oubliette @ 5:44 pm

Wow, I'm really happy to see such show of support! Thanks to all, and I'm glad to know that Harry will be the main "reporter" of GA. Congrats!

It appears that the asylum is the Essex County Psychiatric Facility. The only way I found that out is that I did a search and somewhere it was mentioned that the film "Choke" was filmed at a North Jersey Psych facility. It was on Wikipedia that the movie was discussed and it was mentioned that filming was done at Essex Psychiatric.

The institution may have requested that the name not be mentioned because of a possible inundation by amateur ghost hunters with problems that may accompany such endeavors. If someone happens to get hurt on grounds (despite No Trespassing signs) whoever now owns the property could have legal problems. And then there's always that small amount of individuals who spoil everything for others by vandalizing, writing graffiti etc.

I'm about 98% sure that is where tonight's show was filmed. In any case, it will be interesting to compare GA to GH and how they tackle these decrepit and very scary environments.

Harry @ 11:13 pm

I'll be writing my review tomorrow and sending it to Logisti, but if I may offer a "teaser" preview. . . . . . .

Zowie! There will be a lot to discuss about tonight's show. It had it all—-EVPs saying "Die!", a mean-spirited orb that supposedly slapped Nick in the face (after crawling up his back), and what struck me as a tribute to the Clint Eastwood movie "High Plains Drifter" while Zack was in a straitjacket.

Folks, paranormal-themed entertainment can't get much better than this!

As for whether we should believe any of this, I'll let you folks be the judge of that. But GA was a real hoot tonight!!

November 22, 2008

windwhisperer @ 5:20 pm

I can't wait for your review Harry. You're right, it was a real hoot!

Oubliette @ 8:54 pm

Well, one thing that can be said about GA–that's entertainment!

Give 'em hell, Harry!
